High-resolution spectroscopy of two carbon stars with long-term obscuration events

In this paper, we provide an analysis of the high-resolution optical spectra of two carbon variables, V1983 Cyg and V2074 Cyg, which are presumed to be cool R Corona Borealis (RCB) stars, according to their photometric behaviour. The stars show irregular long-term visual light variations of relatively large amplitude, similar to those exhibited by RCB variables. Based on the comparison of our high-resolution spectra with those of various carbon stars, we conclude that both variables have spectral properties typical for cool N-type carbon stars. X-ray variability of Pleiades late-type stars as observed with the ROSAT-PSPC

We present a comprehensive analysis of X-ray variability of the late-type (dF7-dM) Pleiades stars, detected in all ROSAT-PSPC observations; X-ray variations on short (hours) and medium (months) time scales have been explored. We have grouped the stars in two samples: 89 observations of 42 distinct dF7-dK2 stars and 108 observations of 61 dK3-dM stars. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test applied on all X-ray photon time series show that the percentage of cases of significant vari- ability is quite similar on both samples, suggesting that the presence of variability does not depend on mass for the time scales and mass range explored. Signatures of pulsations and mass loss in the spectra of post-AGB stars

AbstractThe results of high-resolution spectroscopy and radial velocity monitoringa are presented for selected post-AGB candidate stars. Time series of high-resolution spectra for HD235858 shows spliting of low-excitation atomic lines and significant changes in the intensity of C2 and CN lines originated in the extended atmosphere significantly affected by pulsations and outflow. Mass ejection was confirmed for cool R CrB candidate stars DY Per, V1983 Cyg, and V2074 Cyg.

Discussion – Periodic variations and asteroseismology of active OB stars

AbstractWe summarize the discussion held after the session on periodic variations and asteroseismology. The session not only included seven talks, but as well thirty excellent posters were shown. It was impossible to summarize all these in the available frame of a discussion, and so this work focuses on very few sub-topics only mentioned in the actual discussion session. These topics were the relation of pulsation and turbulence, pulsation in close binaries, the observed photometric variability, the connection of pulsations and outburst, and bipolar flows.

High‐Resolution X‐Ray Spectroscopy of the Post–T Tauri Star PZ Telescopii

We present an analysis of the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer observation of the rapidly rotating P_(rot)=0.94 d post T Tauri (~20 Myr old) star PZ Telescopii, in the Tucana association. Using two different methods we have derived the coronal emission measure distribution, em(T), and chemical abundances. The em(T) peaks at log T = 6.9 and exhibits a significant emission measure at temperatures log T > 7. The coronal abundances are generally ~0.5 times the solar photospheric values that are presumed fairly representative of the composition of the underlying star. An X-shooter survey of star forming regions: Low-mass stars and sub-stellar objects

We present preliminary results of our X-shooter survey in star forming regions. In this contribution we focus on sub-samples of young stellar and sub-stellar objects (YSOs) in the Lupus star forming region and in the TW Hya association. We show that the X-shooter spectra are suitable for conducting several parallel studies such as YSO + disk fundamental parameters, accretion and outflow activity in the very low-mass (VLM) and sub-stellar regimes, as well as magnetic activity in young VLM YSOs, and Li abundance determinations. X-rays from accretion shocks in T Tauri stars: The case of BP Tau

We present an XMM-Newton observation of the classical T Tauri star BP Tau. In the XMM-Newton RGS spectrum the O {\sc vii} triplet is clearly detected with a very weak forbidden line indicating high plasma densities and/or a high UV flux environment. At the same time concurrent UV data point to a small hot spot filling factor suggesting an accretion funnel shock as the site of the X-ray and UV emission. Together with the X-ray data on TW Hya these new observations suggest such funnels to be a general feature in classical T Tauri stars.

The Origin of T Tauri X-ray Emission: New Insights from the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project

We use the data of the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP) to study the nearly 600 X-ray sources that can be reliably identified with optically well characterized T Tauri stars (TTS) in the Orion Nebula Cluster. We detect X-ray emission from more than 97% of the optically visible late-type (spectral types F to M) cluster stars. This proofs that there is no ``X-ray quiet'' population of late-type stars with suppressed magnetic activity. All TTS with known rotation periods lie in the saturated or super-saturated regime of the relation between activity and Rossby numbers seen for main-sequence (MS) stars, but the TTS show a much larger scatter in X-ray activity than seen for the MS stars. X-ray emitting MHD accretion shocks in classical T Tauri stars. Case for moderate to high plasma-beta values

AIMS. We investigate the stability and dynamics of accretion shocks in CTTSs, considering the case of beta >= 1 in the post-shock region. In these cases the 1D approximation is not valid and a multi-dimensional MHD approach is necessary. METHODS. We model an accretion stream propagating through the atmosphere of a CTTS and impacting onto its chromosphere, by performing 2D axisymmetric MHD simulations. The model takes into account the stellar magnetic field, the gravity, the radiative cooling, and the thermal conduction (including the effects of heat flux saturation). RESULTS. The X-ray activity-rotation relation of T Tauri stars in Taurus-Auriga

The Taurus-Auriga star-forming complex hosts the only population of T Tauri stars in which an anticorrelation of X-ray activity and rotation period has been observed. We have used XMM-Newton's European Photon Imaging Cameras to perform the most sensitive survey to date of X-ray emission (0.3-10 keV) from young stars in Taurus-Auriga and investigate the dependences of X-ray activity measures -- X-ray luminosity, Lx, its ratio with the stellar luminosity, Lx/Lstar, and the surface-averaged X-ray flux, Fxs -- on rotation period.
