Finite element analysis of two total knee joint prostheses

2012

Aim of this work is to compare two different total knee prostheses that differ mainly in the shape of the polyethylene (PE) component inserted between the femoral and tibial plates. The best solution between them has been originally reshaped in order to reduce stress peaks. The study procedure has been divided into the following steps. First step is the digitalisation of the shape of the prostheses by means of a 3D laser scanner. The morphology of two prototypes of the prostheses has been acquired by elaborating multiple Moire fringe patterns projected on their surfaces. Second step consisted on the manipulation of these data in a CAD module, that is the interpolation of raw data into NURBS…

Evaluation of radiated EMI in 42 V vehicle electrical systems by FDTD simulation

2007

In this paper a full 3D numerical scheme, based on the finite difference time domain method, is used to predict the electromagnetic radiated interference generated by 42 V vehicle power electronic driven electrical loads. An experimental set-up has been arranged on purpose in order to validate the proposed simulation tool. To this aim, the features of a semi-anechoic electromagnetic chamber have been exploited in order to operate in a shielded test site for the measurement of near field radiated emissions. Two different three-dimensional geometrical configurations of realistic vehicle installations of the loads, are studied. A comparative analysis among measured and computed results is perf…

Effect of Motion Artifact on Digital Camera Based Heart Rate Measurement

2017

International audience; Depression is one of the most prevalent mental disorders, burdening many people world-wide. A system with the potential of serving as a decision support system is proposed, based on novel features extracted from facial expression geometry and speech, by interpreting non-verbal manifestations of depression. The proposed system has been tested both in gender independent and gender based modes, and with different fusion methods. The algorithms were evaluated for several combinations of parameters and classification schemes, on the dataset provided by the Audio/Visual Emotion Challenge of 2013 and 2014. The proposed framework achieved a precision of 94.8% for detecting p…

Finite element modelling of slipage between FRP rebar and concrete in pull-out test

2014

The paper presents numerical results of direct pull-out test of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebars embedded in concrete. Rebars of three different cross-sections are considered: circular without longitudinal ribs and with two and four ribs. The design analyses of the rebar configurations embedded in concrete are investigated by the 3D finite element method (FEM), which takes into account the non-linearity using ANSYS software. The results of the numerical model with two ribs were compared with the experimental results. Then, the effect of different rebar geometries to the load-slip pull-out curves was studied. It is concluded that the influence of rib height and width on the pull-…

Modeling and simulation of a VCM micromotor and its potential applications

2013

This paper presents the modeling and simulation of a VCM electrostatic micromotor with a new FEM analysis and implementation method, in order to determine the electrical parameters of the model and the generated electrostatic torque. Both the modeling and the simulation have been achieved using several software programs. In particular, the geometric model created with AUTOCAD has been imported to the FEMM program for the finite-element-method analysis. Then, with the LUA and MATLAB simulation programs, the parameters of the model and the related electrostatic torque have been calculated. The results obtained from this work have been compared with those reported in other scientific papers, s…

Finite-element performance comparison of IPMSMs with unsymmetrical double-layer windings

2017

This paper presents a comparison of the performances between IPMSMs (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine) with a symmetrical and with two different types of unsymmetrical windings. The aim is to demonstrate that the adoption of slightly unsymmetrical windings does not significantly affect the performances of the machines, both in terms of cogging torque and torque/load angle characteristics, providing also the advantage of a higher possibility of choice in terms of slot number/poles ratio. More in particular, an IPMSM model (named IPMSM-1) derived from a commercial geometry equipped with a symmetrical winding is analyzed by using a Finite Element Method (FEM) approach. The simulat…

Push-and-Pull Enteroscopy using the Double-Balloon Technique: Method of Assessing Depth of Insertion and Training of the Enteroscopy Technique using …

2005

Background and study aims This study was conducted to test a method of measuring the depth of insertion into the small bowel during push-and-pull enteroscopy using the Erlangen Endo-Trainer. Furthermore, the Erlangen Endo-Trainer model for training in the new method of push-and-pull enteroscopy using the double-balloon technique was also evaluated. Materials and methods Specially prepared packages of porcine upper visceral organs were used, including the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, and small bowel, implanted into the Erlangen Endo-Trainer. In the first step of this study, all of the modifications needed to obtain a model useful for training in the new enteroscopy technique were tested, in…

Assessment methods for impact of environmentally friendly entrepreneurship and driving forces to the quality of environment

2002

Environmentally friendly entrepreneurship (further – EFE) is one of the tools for improvement environmental quality. There might be made theoretical approaches, how quantitatively large is the impact of the EFE in changes of the quality of environment. In this field theoretical suggestion is prior to practice, because in the most of countries there is domination of several cases, but it could not be used as overall tendency [8; 10]. Opposite impact to quality of environment might be created by driving forces (driving forces are economical indicators, which stimulate changes in quality of environment) [1] like overcon‐sumption, growth of gross domestic product (further – GDP) etc. The articl…

Yacht performance monitoring in real sailing conditions

2019

Abstract In this paper a multi-method approach is used to setup and validate a monitoring system applied to a small sailing boat during real sailing conditions. This monitoring system is able to transform the data coming from some typical devices installed on board into information about the deformed state of the boat. GPS, Wind Data Logger and cameras have been installed on the boat to measure its route and speed, the apparent wind velocity and direction and the positions of the crew members. These data are processed to determine the equilibrium of the boat and estimate the loads applied on it. Then, a CAD/FEM model calculates the effects of these loads on the boat shape. The resulting def…

Co-digestion of manure and biowaste according to the EC Animal By-Products Regulation and Finnish national regulations

2006

The objective of this study was to compare methane production and characteristics of digested material in anaerobic digestion concepts according to the Animal By-Products Regulation (ABP-Regulation) of the EC (hygienisation of biowaste for 1 hour at 70 °C, particle size <12 mm) and Finnish national regulations (treatment temperature 55 °C, feeding interval 24 h, hydraulic retention time (HRT) 20 d, particle size <40 mm) and with small variations in treatment methods for treating manure and biowaste. Moreover, the survival of three different salmonella bacteria in these processes was studied. Hygienisation of biowaste prior to digestion at 35 °C enhanced methane production by 1…
