Innovative straight formulation for plate in bending
2017
In this paper it has been introduced an innovative formulation for evaluating the deflection function of a simply supported plate loaded by uniformly distributed edge moments. Framed into Line Element-less Method, this formulation allows the evaluation of solution in terms of deflection, through few lines of algorithm implemented by Mathematica software without resorting to any discretization neither in the domain nor in the boundary. Interesting savings in terms of time and computational costs are achieved. Results obtained by the proposed method are well contrasted by ones obtained by classical methods and Finite Element Method.
A Nonlinear Primal-Dual Method for Total Variation-Based Image Restoration
1999
We present a new method for solving total variation (TV) minimization problems in image restoration. The main idea is to remove some of the singularity caused by the nondifferentiability of the quantity $|\nabla u|$ in the definition of the TV-norm before we apply a linearization technique such as Newton's method. This is accomplished by introducing an additional variable for the flux quantity appearing in the gradient of the objective function, which can be interpreted as the normal vector to the level sets of the image u. Our method can be viewed as a primal-dual method as proposed by Conn and Overton [ A Primal-Dual Interior Point Method for Minimizing a Sum of Euclidean Norms, preprint,…
Frictionless contact-detachment analysis: iterative linear complementarity and quadratic programming approaches.
2012
The object of the paper concerns a consistent formulation of the classical Signorini’s theory regarding the frictionless contact problem between two elastic bodies in the hypothesis of small displacements and strains. The employment of the symmetric Galerkin boundary element method, based on boundary discrete quantities, makes it possible to distinguish two different boundary types, one in contact as the zone of potential detachment, called the real boundary, the other detached as the zone of potential contact, called the virtual boundary. The contact-detachment problem is decomposed into two sub-problems: one is purely elastic, the other regards the contact condition. Following this method…
Assessment of the Thermo-mechanical Performances of a DEMO Water-Cooled Liquid Metal Blanket Module
2015
Within the framework of DEMO R&D activities, a research cooperation has been launched between ENEA-Brasimone, CEA-Saclay and the University of Palermo to investigate the thermo-mechanical behaviour of the outboard equatorial module of the DEMO1 Water-Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) blanket, both under normal operation and over-pressurization steady state scenarios. The research campaign has been carried out following a theoretical-computational approach based on the finite element method (FEM) and adopting a qualified commercial FEM code. In particular, two different three-dimensional FEM models of the WCLL blanket module have been set-up to be used for normal operation and over-pressurization a…

Method to examine macrobending loss in deformed optical fibre loop
2005
This paper presents the method of research and measurement of macrobending attenuation, present during alteration of geometrical system of optical fibre loop. Presentation of a measuring device, which allows to unifying measurements in (under) conditions close to those present in industrial constructions of devices. Annexed exemplary research of macrobending loss in systems deforming optical fibre loops made from various types of optical fibres.
Optimal measurement setup for damage detection in piezoelectric plates
2009
[EN] An optimization of the excitation-measurement configuration is proposed for the characterization of damage in PZT-4 piezoelectric plates, from a numerical point of view. To perform such an optimization, a numerical method to determine the location and extent of defects in piezoelectric plates is developed by combining the solution of an identification inverse problem, using genetic algorithms and gradient-based methods to minimize a cost functional, and using an optimized finite element code and meshing algorithm. In addition, a semianalytical estimate of the probability of detection is developed and validated, which provides a flexible criterion to optimize the experimental design. Th…
Multicommutation cold vapour atomic fluorescence determination of Hg in water.
2002
Abstract A multicommutation-based method has been developed for the on-line direct atomic fluorescence spectrometric (AFS) determination of Hg in waters without any previous sample treatment. The performance of the proposed procedure has been compared with that of a conventional AFS system based on continuous mode measurements. In short, the use of multicommutation, together with a reduction of the size of the liquid–gas phase separator, provides an increase of the laboratory productivity by improving the sample throughput by a factor of 3.6 and strongly reduces the sample consumed by a factor of 6 and reagent consumed by a factor of 8.4. The waste generation is reduced by a factor of 2.4 a…
Screening of lactic acid bacteria for reducing power using a tetrazolium salt reduction method on milk agar.
2013
WOS:000315703100020 ; www.elsevier.com/locate/jbiosc; International audience; Reducing activity is a physiological property of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) of technological importance. We developed a solid medium with tetrazolium dyes enabling weakly and strongly reducing LAB to be discriminated. It was used to quantify populations in a mixed culture (spreading method) and screen strains (spot method).
