Magnetic field uniformity in neutron electric dipole moment experiments

© 2019 American Physical Society. Magnetic-field uniformity is of the utmost importance in experiments to measure the electric dipole moment of the neutron. A general parametrization of the magnetic field in terms of harmonic polynomial modes is proposed, going beyond the linear-gradients approximation. We review the main undesirable effects of nonuniformities: depolarization of ultracold neutrons and Larmor frequency shifts of neutrons and mercury atoms. Material radioassay and selection for the XENON1T dark matter experiment

The XENON1T dark matter experiment aims to detect weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) through low-energy interactions with xenon atoms. To detect such a rare event necessitates the use of radiopure materials to minimize the number of background events within the expected WIMP signal region. In this paper we report the results of an extensive material radioassay campaign for the XENON1T experiment. Using gamma-ray spectroscopy and mass spectrometry techniques, systematic measurements of trace radioactive impurities in over one hundred samples within a wide range of materials were performed. International audience; We report on the Beam EDM experiment, which aims to employ a pulsed cold neutron beam to search for an electric dipole moment instead of the established use of storable ultracold neutrons. We present a brief overview of the basic measurement concept and the current status of our proof-of-principle Ramsey apparatus.
An Ultrasonic Lens Design Based on Prefractal Structures

The improvement in focusing capabilities of a set of annular scatterers arranged in a fractal geometry is theoretically quantified in this work by means of the finite element method (FEM). Two different arrangements of rigid rings in water are used in the analysis. Thus, both a Fresnel ultrasonic lens and an arrangement of rigid rings based on Cantor prefractals are analyzed. Results show that the focusing capacity of the modified fractal lens is better than the Fresnel lens. This new lens is believed to have potential applications for ultrasonic imaging and medical ultrasound fields.
Use of Prandtl-Ishlinskii hysteresis operators for Coulomb friction modeling with presliding

Prandtl-Ishlinskii stop-type hysteresis operators allow for modeling elasto-plasticity in the relative stress-strain coordinates including the saturation level of the residual constant-tension flow. This lies in direct equivalence to the force-displacement characteristics of nonlinear Coulomb friction, whose constant average value at unidirectional motion depends on the motion sign only, after the transient presliding phase at each motion reversal. Abstract In this paper three formulations based on an Eulerian approach are presented to obtain the dynamic response of an elastic solid of revolution, which rotates around its main axis at constant angular velocity. The formulations are especially suitable for the study of the interaction of a solid with a non-rotating structure, such as occurs in the coupled dynamics of a railway wheelset with the track. Structural components with waveguide geometry can be probed using guided elastic waves. Analytical solutions are prohibitive in complex geometries, especially in presence of structural discontinuities or defects. The Global-Local (GL) approach provides the solution by splitting the waveguide in “local” and “global” regions. The “local” region contains the part of the structure responsible for the complex scattering of an incident wave. What happens in this region cannot be reproduced analytically.
