About the finite convergence of the proximal point algorithm

We study the finite convergence property of the proximal point algorithm applied to the partial inverse, with respect to a subspace, of the subdifferential of a polyhedral convex function. Using examples we show how sufficient conditions providing the finite convergence can be realized and we give a case with non finite termination.

This study deals with the understanding of the mechanisms of pitting corrosion susceptible to occur on carbon steel selected for high level nuclear waste containers. Experimental and numerical assessment of subsurface plastic deformation induced by OFHC copper machining

Strain distributions in the machined surface and subsurface of OFHC copper workpieces were determined experimentally and through numerical simulations. An experimental setup, comprising a double frame camera and a pulsed laser, was developed to measure the displacement fields using the digital image correlation (DIC) technique; strain distributions were then calculated. A numerical orthogonal cutting model was also developed and applied in order to predict such distributions. Notions of Dirichlet problem for functions of least gradient in metric measure spaces

We study two notions of Dirichlet problem associated with BV energy minimizers (also called functions of least gradient) in bounded domains in metric measure spaces whose measure is doubling and supports a (1, 1)-Poincaré inequality. Since one of the two notions is not amenable to the direct method of the calculus of variations, we construct, based on an approach of Juutinen and Mazón-Rossi–De León, solutions by considering the Dirichlet problem for p-harmonic functions, p>1, and letting p→1. Optimizing auditory images and distance metrics for self‐organizing timbre maps*

Abstract The effect of using different auditory images and distance metrics on the final configuration of a self‐organized timbre map is examined by comparing distance matrices, obtained from simulations, with a similarity rating matrix, obtained using the same set of stimuli as in the simulations. Gradient images, which are intended to represent idealizations of physiological gradient maps in the auditory pathway, are constructed. The optimal auditory image and distance metric, with respect to the similarity rating data, are searched using the gradient method.

On a topology optimization problem governed by two-dimensional Helmholtz equation

The paper deals with a class of shape/topology optimization problems governed by the Helmholtz equation in 2D. To guarantee the existence of minimizers, the relaxation is necessary. Two numerical methods for solving such problems are proposed and theoretically justified: a direct discretization of the relaxed formulation and a level set parametrization of shapes by means of radial basis functions. In this paper, a critical analysis of the technical difficulties and numerical issues in running simulations of linear friction welding processes is carried out.
