TORSIONAL STRESS CONCENTRATIONS IN SHAFTS: FROM ELECTRICAL ANALOGIES TO NUMERICAL METHODS
2013
This paper presents the historical development of methods used for the study of torsional stresses in shafts. In particular the paper covers both analog methods, in particular those based on electrical analogies proposed since about 1925, and numerical methods, in particular finite difference methods (FDM), finite element methods (FEM) and boundary elements (BEM).
Vibration-based identification of mechanical properties of orthotropic arbitrarily shaped plates: Numerical and experimental assessment
2018
Abstract An innovative procedure is introduced for the identification of the mechanical parameters of orthotropic plates of arbitrary shape, under various boundary conditions, based on vibration data. The method employs a combination of a convenient Rayleigh-Ritz approach and Particle-Swarm Optimization to estimate elastic constants of the orthotropic material in a straightforward manner, without requiring computationally demanding iterative Finite Element analyses. Specifically, the pb-2 Rayleigh-Ritz procedure is extended and applied to deal with orthotropic plates, simplifying the approach to more easily treat generic plate shapes, taking advantage of the Green's theorem. The method is t…
Dynamic response of equivalent orthotropic plate model for stiffened plate: numerical-experimental assessment
2017
Abstract Over the last two decades, homogenization-based modeling techniques have attracted considerable attention. In fact, through these methods, structures such as corrugated or stiffened plates, commonly referred to as structurally orthotropic plates, can be approximately studied as equivalent flat plates with orthotropic behavior. Specifically, these homogenization techniques allow for the direct determination of the equivalent flexural and torsional rigidities which appear in the governing equation for the deflection of the equivalent orthotropic plate. It is worth noting that, the determined equivalent material properties retain the dependence on the geometric parameters of the origi…
An Approach for the Design of Self-conscious Agent for Robotics
2010
Developing complex robotic systems endowed with self- conscious abilities and subjective experience is a hard requirement to face at design time. This paper deals with the development of robotic systems that do not own any a-priori knowledge of the environment they live in and proposes an agent-orientd design process for modelling and implementing such a systems by means of implementing the perception loop occurring between environment, body and brain during subjective experience. A case study dealing with a robocup setup is proposed in order to describe the design process activities and to illustrate the techniques for making the robot able to autonomously decide when an unknown situations…

Un nouvel algorithme pour une solution robuste des équations complètes de Saint-Venant
2003
A new procedure for the numerical solution of the fully dynamic shallow water equations is presented. The procedure is a fractional step methodology where the original system is split into two sequential ones. The first system differs from the original one because of the head gradient term, that is treated as constant and equal to the value computed at the end of the previous time step. The solution of this system, called kinematic, is computed in each element using a spatial zero order approximation for both the heads and the flow rates by means of integration of single ODEs. The second system is called diffusive, contains in the momentum equations only the complementary terms and can be e…
Experimental and Numerical Analysis of the Distribution of Residual Stresses Induced by Laser Shock Peening in a 2050-T8 Aluminium Alloy
2011
Laser shock peening (LSP) is an innovative surface treatment technique successfully applied to improving fatigue performance of metallic material. The specific characteristic of (LSP) is the generation of a low work-hardening and a deep compressive residual stresses mechanically produced by a laser-induced shock wave propagating in the material. The aim of this study is to analyse the residual stress distribution induced by laser peening in 2050-T8 aluminium alloy experimentally by the X-ray diffraction technique (method sin2Y) and numerically, by a finite element numerical modelling. A specific focus was put on the residual stress distribution along the surface of the impacted material.
Analysis of laser shock waves and resulting surface deformations in an Al-Cu-Li aluminium alloy
2012
Abstract Laser shock processing is now a recognized surface treatment for improving fatigue or corrosion behaviour of metallic materials through the generation of a compressive stress field. In turn, the analysis of shock wave propagation is of primary importance to predict numerically morphological and mechanical surface modifications. Considering experimental and numerical analyses of shock wave propagation, and surface deformations induced by single impacts, a 2050 aluminum alloy having different microstructures was investigated under laser-shock loading. In a first step, the evolution of shock wave attenuation and elastic precursor amplitude was correctly reproduced by finite element si…
Analysis of Stray Flux Spectral Components in Induction Machines under Rotor Bar Breakages at Various Locations
2018
Induction machines under rotor electrical faults have been subjected to intensive research over the years. It is not only the nature of the fault that makes it important to study, but also the differences observed regarding this fault's effect on the motor's conditions. One of these conditions is the rotor bar breakages at non adjacent positions, which has drawn the attention of researchers due to the false negative diagnostic alarms that may be caused. In this paper, a novel approach is presented aiming to reliably detect this type of fault condition. The proposed method is based on the analysis of specific subcomponents of the stray flux over time. The analysis is implemented on an indust…
