Faced with intensifying competition for scientific impact measured in terms of citation counts, small disciplines are challenged to prove their importance as they lack the critical mass to accumulate large numbers of citations. This paper demonstrates that by emphasizing theoretical and methodological rigor even small disciplines such as business history can be competitive. The Gothic is an influential source for storytelling in a wide range of digital games. Thus far, interpreting it in games and how they are informed by Gothic ideology has been little studied. This study seeks to address this gap in research by investigating these issues in the narrative of the action role-playing game, Fallout 3. More specifically, through a close reading of the game narrative and by drawing on theories of the Gothic, ideological aspects of the Gothic are analyzed in detail with specific reference to non-player characters and their actions and dialogue along with elements of the mise-en-scéne, style, and simulation. ‘A Hellish Nightmare’: The Swedish Press and the Construction of Early Holocaust Narratives, 1945–1950

This study examines how the Swedish press responded to and portrayed the Holocaust immediately after the war. The liberation of the camps, the role and guilt of ordinary Germans, the Nuremberg trials and the ongoing problem of Jewish DPs in Europe were the most important issues on the basis of which the Swedish press had shaped the early post-war view of the Holocaust. Moreover, the fate of the Jews under Nazi Germany formed an important element of such reporting. Tämä tutkielma käsittelee sukupuolivähemmistöjen representaatiota kolmessa sanomalehdessä. Suomessa sukupuolivähemmistöjä (transihmiset ja transvestiitit) on tutkittu mediassa hyvin vähän, uutistekstissä tuskin ollenkaan. Tutkielma etsii vastausta paitsi siihen, millaisia representaatioita sukupuolivähemmistöistä käytetään, myös siihen, kenellä on oikeus sukupuolensa mukaiseen ja sukupuoltaan kunnioittavaan representaatioon. Tutkielman lähtökohtana on queer-tutkimus sisarteoria transgender studies, joka on kiinnostunut sukupuolten epätyypillisyydestä. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää, millaisia mediarepresentaatioita Suomen ensimmäisenä naispääministerinä toimineesta Anneli Jäätteenmäestä mediassa muodostetaan ja miten median tapa kuvata poliitikkoja on sukupuolittunut. Näitä mediarepresentaatioita eli mediaesityksiä tarkastellaan konstruktivistisesta näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksen teoria nojaa feministiseen politiikan tutkimukseen sekä feministiseen mediatutkimukseen. Lisäksi tutkimuksen taustalla vaikuttaa vahvana yhteiskunnallinen jako yksityiseen sekä julkiseen sfääriin.
