Keskustelukumppanin kehuminen suomalaisessa keskustelussa
2013
Artikkelissa tarkastellaan suomalaisen arkikeskustelun kehuja kolmen peruskysymyksen kautta: 1) millaisia kehut ovat rakenteeltaan, 2) miten kehut otetaan vastaan ja 3) millaisissa tilanteissa kehuja esitetaan ja mita niilla tehdaan? Tutkimus on metodiltaan keskustelunanalyyttinen: kehuja analysoidaan osana aitojen keskustelujen toiminnallista kudosta. Aineistona on seka nauhoitetuista arkikeskusteluista poimitt…
Authorship vs. Assemblage in Digital Media
2021
This chapter outlines an approach to complement current analyses on agencies of storytelling in digital environments. As our everyday life and meaning-making are increasingly entangled with digital platforms such as those of social media services, ways to critically examine digital media as an environment in literary theory are urgently needed – something that the existing analyses have mostly ignored. The particular point of contention in this chapter is the concept of authorship which has gone hand in hand with the understanding of authoring as a work of distinct agents, as it fails to acknowledge the ways in which human agency is entangled with more-than-human actors within digital envir…
Economic Consequences of Investing in Anti-HCV Antiviral Treatment from the Italian NHS Perspective: A Real-World-Based Analysis of PITER Data
2019
OBJECTIVE:\ud We estimated the cost consequence of Italian National Health System (NHS) investment in direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy according to hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment access policies in Italy.\ud \ud METHODS:\ud A multistate, 20-year time horizon Markov model of HCV liver disease progression was developed. Fibrosis stage, age and genotype distributions were derived from the Italian Platform for the Study of Viral Hepatitis Therapies (PITER) cohort. The treatment efficacy, disease progression probabilities and direct costs in each health state were obtained from the literature. The break-even point in time (BPT) was defined as the period of time required for the cumulativ…

MATLAB codes implementing the generalized cross-wavelet transform (GXWT) algorithm described in the paper "Analyzing multidimensional movement interaction with generalized cross-wavelet transform" (Toiviainen & Hartmann, 2021). Basic workflow for multivariate (time by channel) signals d1 and d2: [w1,f] = cwtensor(d1,FS,MINF,MAXF); [w2,f] = cwtensor(d2,FS,MINF,MAXF); [xs p1 p2] = getxwt(w1,w2); NOTE: cwtensor.m requires the Wavelet Toolbox for MATLAB.
Fish and human health: an umbrella review of observational studies
2022
Fish represents one of the most important dietary sources of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are known to be associated with various health benefits. This study aimed to systematically review existing meta-analyses of observational studies exploring the association between fish intake and various health outcomes. A systematic search of electronic databases was conducted to retrieve a total of 63 studies. Evidence was deemed as possible for the association between higher fish intake and decreased risk of the acute coronary syndrome, liver cancer, and depression, and limited for other outcomes (including age-related macular degeneration, Alzheimer’s disease, heart failure, all-caus…
Cancer in Elderly Onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Population-Based Study.
2016
IF 10.383; International audience; OBJECTIVES: Cancer may be a complication of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or its treatment. In elderly onset IBD patients the risk of malignancy is of particular concern. We studied this risk in a population-based cohort of elderly onset IBD patients.METHODS: In a French population-based cohort, we identified 844 patients aged >60 years at IBD diagnosis from 1988 to 2006, including 370 Crohn's disease (CD) and 474 ulcerative colitis (UC). We compared incidence of cancer among IBD patients with that observed in the French Network of population-based Cancer Registries (FRANCIM). Confidence interval (CI) was estimated assuming a Poisson-specific law for ra…
“Sexuality does not belong to the game” : Discourses in Overwatch Community and the Privilege of Belonging
2022
Players can experience a sense of belonging to videogames and the transmedial worlds surrounding them. There nevertheless exist ongoing negotiations over who has the right to belong to these spaces. Multiple works addressing related issues have highlighted that white heterosexual men still maintain the position of power in the majority of game communities (e.g., Consalvo, 2012; Paul, 2018). This position can translate into an ease of belonging while others can find themselves struggling for the right to belong. We examine the transmedial world of Overwatch, an online game, as a place of belonging and non-belonging. Since the game’s launch, two characters have been revealed as queer. In cont…
Assessing long-term fiscal developments : a new approach
2011
We use a new approach to assess long-term fiscal developments. By analyzing the time-varying behaviour of the two components of government spending and revenue – responsiveness and persistence–, a feature not captured by automatic stabilisers, we are able to infer about the sources of fiscal deterioration (improvement). Drawing on quarterly data, we estimate recursively these components within a system of government revenue and spending equations using a Three-Stage Least Square method for eight European Union countries plus the US. The results suggest that significant changes in the fiscal stance (including those related to the current crisis) are reflected in the estimates of persistence …
Federalism and Party Democracy in West Germany
2011
According to Gerhard Lehmbruch, there is a growing inconsistency in West Germany between the principles of a federal polity and party democracy, primarily because the former relies on bargaining, and the latter relies on majority rule as a mechanism of conflict regulation. However, comparative analyses have shown that federalism and party competition are not incompatible. Generally, federal structures are neither detrimental nor conducive to the recruitment function of parties. Competence and experience as a parliamentary leader or as a specialist is the most essential precondition for advancement to national executive positions. The integrative capacities of political parties may even be s…
