Mucinous cystadenomas and intraductal papillary mucinous tumors of the pancreas in magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography.

2000

Background and Study Aims: In mucin-producing tumors of the pancreas, diagnosis using endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is limited to cystic formations that communicate with the main pancreatic duct. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a new, sophisticated method which is currently under evaluation. The authors describe the usefulness of MRCP in diagnosis of mucin-producing tumors. Patients and Methods: Six patients with mucin-producing tumors were investigated using MRCP and ERCP. Imaging was compared with surgery and histopathological examinations. Results: Three patients were found to have mucinous cystadenomas (MC), two patients had intraductal papi…

The Effects of Prostaglandin E-1 in Patients with Intermittent Claudication

2006

Aim of the study is to evaluate the effects of Prostaglandin E-1 (PGE-1) in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) at the 2nd b stage Fontaines classification. The study, controlled, single blinded, enrolled 123 patients with intermittent claudication that were randomised in two groups; the first group received a treatment with PGE-1 while the second one received a pentoxifylline-buflomedil association by venous infusion. We evaluated: Pain Free Walking Distance (PFWD), Maximum Walking Distance (MWD), Rest Flow (RF), Peak Flow (PF), Basal (BVR) and Minimal Vascular Resistance (MVR) with a strain gauge plethysmograph, Resting Flow (RF), Peak Flow (PF), time to reach the Peak Flow (t…

The effect of cholecalciferol for lowering albuminuria in chronic kidney disease: a prospective controlled study.

2013

Background. Growing evidence indicates that vitamin D receptor activation may have antiproteinuric effects. We aimed to evaluate whether vitamin D supplementation with daily cholecalciferol could reduce albuminuria in proteinuric chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Methods. This 6-month prospective, controlled, intervention study enrolled 101 non-dialysis CKD patients with albuminuria. Patients with low 25(OH) vitamin D [25(OH)D] and high parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels (n = 50; 49%) received oral cholecalciferol (666 IU/day), whereas those without hyperparathyroidism (n = 51; 51%), independent of their vitamin D status, did not receive any cholecalciferol, and were considered as the co…

Efficacy of the treatment with prostaglandin E-1 in venous ulcers of the lower limbs.

2005

Background. Venous ulcers represent an important medical problem due to their high prevalence and consequent sanitary costs. In this study we evaluated the effect of Prostaglandin E-1 (PGE-1), a drug that improves district ischemia, on the healing of venous ulcers. Methods. We performed a randomized, placebo-controlled, single blind study, in which 87 patients, carriers of venous leg ulcers, homogeneous for dimensions and characteristics, were treated for 20 days an with infusion of Prostaglandin E-1 or placebo, in association with a topic therapy. The dimension and the number of the ulcers were determined at the beginning of the treatment and then every 20 days up to 4 months or until tota…

Erratum: Phase II study of sequential hormonal therapy with anastrozole/exemestane in advanced and metastatic breast cancer

2005

Hormonal therapy is the preferred systemic treatment for recurrent or metastatic, post-menopausal hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer. Previous studies have shown that there is no cross-resistance between exemestane and reversible aromatase inhibitors. Exposure to hormonal therapy does not hamper later response to chemotherapy. Patients with locally advanced or metastatic, hormonal receptor positive or unknown, breast cancer were treated with oral anastrozole, until disease progression, followed by oral exemestane until new evidence of disease progression. The primary end point of the study was clinical benefit, defined as the sum of complete responses (CR), partial responses (PR) and >…

Abnormal Immunoexpression of Cell Adhesion Molecules (CAMs) in Cervical Cancer

2010

Artículo publicado en: International Journal of Surgical Pathology published online 18 July 2010 The purpose of this study was to examine the immunoexpression of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) E-cadherin, CD44s, and CD44v3 in cervical cancer and compare it with that in benign exo-endocervical tissue. In all, 81 cervical cancer biopsy specimens and 22 benign controls were included. Primary monoclonal antibodies NHC-38, F10-44-2, and 3G5 for E-cadherin, CD44s, and CD44v3 were used, respectively. Statistical significance was evaluated by the ?2 test. Antigen expression was significantly different in cervical cancer specimens compared with controls, showing marked decrease in membrane expressio…

Mass Output and Particle Size Distribution of Glucocorticosteroids Emitted from Different Inhalation Devices Depending on Various Inspiratory Paramet…

2002

Efficient inhalation therapy depends on successful delivery of the drug to the lung. The efficacy of drug delivery is not only influenced by the characteristics of the inhalation device, but also by the patient's handling of the device and by the inspiratory maneuver achieved through the device. We analyzed the output characteristics of three different chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)-free breath-actuated inhalers for inhaled glucocorticosteroids (BUD Turbohaler, FP Diskus/Accuhaler and HFA-BDP Autohaler, respectively). Mass output and particle size distribution of drug aerosol delivered by the inhalers were determined depending on different inhalation parameters in vitro using an Andersen cascade …

Immunohistochemical expression of ubiquitin and telomerase in cervical cancer

2009

Artículo publicado en: Virchows Arch (2009) 455:235–243. DOI 10.1007/s00428-009-0818-7 Ubiquitin and telomerase immunohistochemical expression patterns in cervical cancer were compared with normal cervical tissue samples. Eighty-one cervical cancer cases and 22 normal exo–endocervical tissue were examined with polyclonal antibody for ubiquitin and 44G12 clone for telomerase using tissue microarrays. The results were interpreted using a semiquantitative scale The average age of patients was 50.67 years. The most frequent histological types were moderately differentiated epidermoid carcinoma (43.5%), according to the degree of differentiation, and endocervical adenocarcinoma (42.1%). Immunohi…

Avaliação da resposta de acomodação após tarefas visuais próximas usando diferentes dispositivos eletrônicos portáteis

2015

ABSTRACT Purpose: To assess the accommodation response after short reading periods using a tablet and a smartphone as well as determine potential differences in the accommodation response at various stimulus vergences using a Hartmann- Shack aberrometer. Methods: Eighteen healthy subjects with astigmatism of less than 1 D, corrected visual acuity of 20/20 or better, and normal findings in an ophthalmic examination were enrolled. Accommodation responses were obtained under three different conditions: accommodation system of the eye relaxed and visually stressed with a tablet and an smartphone for 10 min, at a distance of 0.25 m from the subject's eyes. Three measurements of accommodation res…

2017

Objectives: (1) To analyze the prevalence of Intimate Partner Violence by types. (2) To examine the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and Intimate Partner Violence. Design: Cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire. Setting: Primary Healthcare centers in Spain. Participants: 10,322 women (18–70 years) attending Primary Healthcare centers. Main measurements: A compound index was calculated based on frequency, types, and duration of Intimate Partner Violence. Multivariable adjusted logistic regression models were used to identify the sociodemographic factors, which were independently associated with each Intimate Partner Violence category. Results: The …
