Potential role of heme oxygenase-1 in the progression of rat adjuvant arthritis

Rat adjuvant arthritis is an experimental model widely used to evaluate etiopathogenetic mechanisms in chronic inflammation. We have examined the participation of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in this experimental arthritis. In this study, an increased nitric oxide (NO) production in the paw preceded the upregulation of HO-1, whereas selective inhibition of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) after the onset of arthritis decreased HO-1 expression, suggesting that the induction of this enzyme may depend on NO produced by iNOS. Interleukin-1 inhibits drinking behaviour through prostaglandins, but not by nitric oxide formation

Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) causes inhibition of drinking behaviour. Moreover it induces formation of prostaglandins (PGs) and nitric oxide (NO). Both PGs and NO are able to inhibit drinking stimulated by water deprivation or by intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of angiotensin II. In this study, we studied in the preoptic area (POA) the possible role of PGs and NO in the antidipsogenic action induced by IL-1 beta. Perioperative pupil size in low-energy femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery

Purpose To assess potential changes in pupil size during femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) using a low-energy laser system. Methods The pupil sizes of eyes undergoing FLACS were measured using the Ziemer LDV Z8 by extracting images from the laser software after each of the following steps: application of suction, lens fragmentation, and capsulotomy. Furthermore, the pupil diameters were measured based on preoperative surgical microscope images and after releasing the suction. The specificity of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in reducing coronary vascular resistance: A comparison with adenosine.

Experiments were performed on the isolated, electrically driven guinea-pig heart, perfused at constant rate. All animals were pretreated with reserpine. Myocardial contractile force (MCF), coronary perfusion pressure (CPP) and myocardial oxygen consumption (QO2) were monitored continuously. Both adenosine (ADO) and PGE2 produced a concentration-dependent decrease in the CPP. The ED50 (50% of maximum response) was 2.1 +/- 0.6 X 10(-9)M for PGE2 but 40 +/- 7 X 10(-9)M for ADO (P less than 0.01) at 1.8 mM Ca(e). Prostaglandin E2 receptors and COX enxymes in human hepatocellular carcinoma: role in the regulation of cell growth

The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of prostaglandin E 2 receptors (EP 1-4 ), cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), and COX-2 in nontumor and tumor human liver tissues, and also to evaluate the antitumor activity of selective EP 1 receptor antagonist used alone or in combination with COX-1 and COX-2 selective inhibitors. Modulation of adrenergic contraction of dog pulmonary arteries by nitric oxide and prostacyclin.

Abstract The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of endothelium-derived nitric oxide and prostaglandins on the contractile responses of isolated dog pulmonary arteries to electrical field stimulation and noradrenaline. Electrical field stimulation (1–8 Hz, 20 v, 0.25 ms duration, for 30 s) produced frequency-dependent contractions that were abolished by tetrodotoxin, guanethidine and, prazosin (all at 10−6 M). Noradrenaline induced concentration-dependent contractions with an EC50 of 1.85 × 10−6 M. Contribution of endothelin receptors and cyclooxygenase-derivatives to the altered response of the rabbit renal artery to endothelin-1 in diabetes

Abstract The influence of diabetes on regulatory mechanisms and specific receptors implicated in the response of isolated rabbit renal artery to endothelin-1 was examined. Endothelin-1 induced a concentration-dependent contraction that was less potent in arteries from diabetic rabbits than in arteries from control rabbits.
