Monitoring Program of Small-Scale Solar Heating and Cooling within IEA-SHC Task 38 – Procedure and First Results

2010

Within IEA-SHC Task 38 (Solar Air Conditioning and Refrigeration), a monitoring procedure for solar heating and cooling systems was developed. This methodology includes measurements of all relevant energy flows (heat, cold, electricity) to be able to derive key figures such as primary energy ratio, electrical coefficient of performance, solar heat management efficiency, fractional savings for heating and cooling compared to a conventional (non solar) heating and cooling system. A number of small-scale systems for solar heating and cooling are currently being monitored across Europe. For a handful of systems monitoring data of at least a full year of operation is already available. These sys…

Age differences in the irrelevant sound effect: A serial recognition paradigm

2015

In adults, the disrupting effect of irrelevant background sounds with distinct temporalspectral variations (changing-state sounds) on short-term memory performance was found to be robust. In the present study, a verbal serial recognition task was used to investigate this so-called Irrelevant Sound Effect (ISE) in adults and 8- to 10-year-old children. An essential part of the short-term memory impairment during changing-state speech is due to interference processes (changing-state effect) which can be differentiated from the deviation effect of auditory distraction. In line with recent findings (Hughes et al., 2013), our study demonstrates that the changing-state effect is not modulated by …

On the effectiveness of vocal imitations and verbal descriptions of sounds

2014

cote interne IRCAM: Lemaitre14b; None / None; International audience; Describing unidentified sounds with words is a frustrating task and vocally imitating them is often a convenient way to address the issue. This article reports on a study that compared the effectiveness of vocal imitations and verbalizations to communicate different referent sounds. The stimuli included mechanical and synthesized sounds and were selected on the basis of participants' confidence in identifying the cause of the sounds, ranging from easy-to-identify to unidentifiable sounds. The study used a selection of vocal imitations and verbalizations deemed adequate descriptions of the referent sounds. These descriptio…

Mapping of BLASTP Algorithm onto GPU Clusters

2011

Searching protein sequence database is a fundamental and often repeated task in computational biology and bioinformatics. However, the high computational cost and long runtime of many database scanning algorithms on sequential architectures heavily restrict their applications for large-scale protein databases, such as GenBank. The continuing exponential growth of sequence databases and the high rate of newly generated queries further deteriorate the situation and establish a strong requirement for time-efficient scalable database searching algorithms. In this paper, we demonstrate how GPU clusters, powered by the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA), OpenMP, and MPI parallel programmi…

Statistical analysis of latency outcomes in behavioral experiments

2011

In experimental designs of animal models, memory is often assessed by the time for a performance measure to occur (latency). Depending on the cognitive test, this may be the time it takes an animal to escape to a hidden platform (water maze), an escape tunnel (Barnes maze) or to enter a dark component (passive avoidance test). Latency outcomes are usually statistically analyzed using ANOVAs. Besides strong distributional assumptions, ANOVA cannot properly deal with animals not showing the performance measure within the trial time, potentially causing biased and misleading results. We propose an alternative approach for statistical analyses of latency outcomes. These analyses have less distr…

Reintroducing photosynthesis.

2011

This article reports on conceptual difficulties related to photosynthesis and respiratory metabolism of a Plant Physiology course for undergraduate students that could hinder their better learning of metabolic processes. A survey of results obtained in this area during the last 10 academic years was performed, as well as a specific test, aimed to find out prior conceptual schemes in the students. The test included only basic, general questions on plant metabolism, and was passed on the first day of the course. Scores obtained by different groups of students were compared. Survey of students' performance in previous years shows that questions on plant metabolism result in significantly lower…

Do distractors interfere with memory for study pairs in associative recognition?

2006

In an associative recognition task, distractors generally consist of a rearrangement of the items composing the study pairs. This makes it possible that processing the distractors generates retroactive interference on memory for the study pairs. In Experiment 1, we explored this possibility in a yes/no recognition test concerning previously learned arbitrary associations between visual symbols and auditory syllables. Rearranged pairs had a deleterious impact on the accuracy and the speed of responses to related correct pairs. This effect did not vary as a function of the number of training blocks, and furthermore, in Experiment 2, the same effect was observed for overlearned small multiplic…

Multi-scale Modelling of Segmentation

2016

While listening to music, people often unwittingly break down musical pieces into constituent chunks such as verses and choruses. Music segmentation studies have suggested that some consensus regarding boundary perception exists, despite individual differences. However, neither the effects of experimental task (i.e., real-time vs. annotated segmentation), nor of musicianship on boundary perception are clear. Our study assesses musicianship effects and differences between segmentation tasks. We conducted a real-time experiment to collect segmentations by musicians and nonmusicians from nine musical pieces. In a second experiment on non-real-time segmentation, musicians indicated boundaries a…

Alignment-Free Sequence Comparison over Hadoop for Computational Biology

2015

Sequence comparison i.e., The assessment of how similar two biological sequences are to each other, is a fundamental and routine task in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. Classically, alignment methods are the de facto standard for such an assessment. In fact, considerable research efforts for the development of efficient algorithms, both on classic and parallel architectures, has been carried out in the past 50 years. Due to the growing amount of sequence data being produced, a new class of methods has emerged: Alignment-free methods. Research in this ares has become very intense in the past few years, stimulated by the advent of Next Generation Sequencing technologies, since those…

Lo spazio logico della metafisica

2018

Starting from the relationship with the "field of concepts" described by Kant in the "Critique of Judgment" the essay reflects on the metaphysical field identified by Nicolaci as a space proper to philosophy in its eminently critical role and as a specific task of metaphysics
