Most benzoannulated 2-methylpyridines react with phenyllithium and substituted alkyl benzoates to give the corresponding 2-phenacylpyridines. 3-Methylisoquinoline is transformed into 2-benzoyl-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1,2-dihydroisoquinoline under these conditions, but replacement of phenyllithium with lithium isopropylcyclohexylamide is effective for production of 3-phenacylisoquinolines. An unprecedented N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed annulation of isatin-derived enals and o-hydroxyphenyl-substituted p-quinone methides as bifunctional reagents has been discovered. The new protocol involves a 1,6-addition of the homoenolate equivalent intermediates to the hydroxy donor-1,6-Michael acceptors and leads to spirocyclic oxindole-ε-lactones in high yields and very good stereoselectivities.

After a brief review of the recent acquisition in some native genera of family Asteraceae from southern Italy and Sicily, a new endemic species of Anthemis (sect. Hiorthia) is described from Sicily and named Anthemis parlatoreana. The locus classicus of the new taxon, falling in the NW Tyrrhenian coast of the island (Castellammare del Golfo, Trapani), coincides with that of Ptilostemon greuteri, another endemic very rare species of the Sicilian flora. Data on the morphology, distribution, ecology and conservation status of the new species are provided. En este artículo, cuyo análisis se centra en los años de la Restauración en que se plantea la cuestión religiosa, de 1899 a 1902, destacamos al importancia política y social que el anticlericalismo tiene en la ciudad de Valencia desde que es hegemonizado por los republicanos radicales seguidores de Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, y abordamos las diferentes respuestas que ese anticlericalismo provocaría en las fuerzas políticas católicas de la ciudad.
Antifungal activity and tautomeric cyclization equilibria of formylphenylboronic acids

2-Formylphenylboronic acid and four isomeric fluoro-2-formylphenylboronic acids have been found active against a series of fungal strains: Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium and Candida. The level of antifungal activity was evaluated by agar diffusion tests as well as the determination of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) by serial dilution method. Among the tested compounds, 4-fluoro-2-formylphenylboronic acid - an analogue of the known antifungal drug Tavaborole (AN2690) - proved to be the most potent antifungal agent. Biothiols, taurine, and flavonols, as well as tocopherols and carotenoids have been assessed in the edible pulp of Sicilian red (Sanguigna), yellow (Surfarina), and white (Muscaredda) cultivars of cactus pear. The yellow cultivar has the highest level of reduced glutathione (GSH, 8.1 +/- 0.78 mg/100 g pulp), whereas the white cultivar showed the highest amount of cysteine (1.21 +/- 0.12 mg/100 g pulp). Taurine accounted for 11.7 +/- 1.0 mg/100 g in the yellow pulp, while lower levels were measured in the others.
