Redescription of the forgotten New Caledonian weevil genus
2018
Abstract Callistomorphus is one of the “forgotten” genera of the tribe Eugnomini inhabiting rain forest in New Caledonia. In this paper, the genus Callistomorphus and the type species C.farinosus are redescribed. Eight new species, Callistomorphusfundatussp. n., C.gibbussp. n., C.malleussp. n., C.minimussp. n., C.rutaisp. n., C.szoltysisp. n., C.torosussp. n. and C.turbidussp. n., are described, originating from the main island of New Caledonia. Illustrations and SEM photographs of the external morphology and the male and female terminalia are provided, as well as dorsal habitus colour photographs of the adults, a key to the species, a distribution map, and a discussion of the systematic po…
[3]Rotaxanes and [3]pseudorotaxanes with a rigid two-bidentate chelate axle threaded through two coordinating rings
2009
New [3]rotaxanes and [3]pseudorotaxanes have been synthesised using the “gathering and threading” effect of copper(I). By using click chemistry as the “stoppering” reaction, a good yield of the [3]rotaxane was obtained, either as a dicopper complex or as a metal-free compound after demetallation. The axle contains a central rigid aromatic block incorporating two bidentate chelates, and the threaded macrocycles are 30-membered rings. A model dicopper(I) [3]pseudorotaxane whose axle was end-functionalised by triisopropylsilyl groups could be crystallised and studied by X-ray diffraction. A particularly attractive structure was obtained showing a “slanted” geometry for the two rings and the ax…

SNPs and taxane toxicity in breast cancer patients
2014
Aim: In order to identify genetic variants associated with taxanes toxicity, a panel with 47 SNPs in 20 genes involved in taxane pathways was designed. Patients & methods: Genomic DNA of 113 breast cancer patients was analyzed (70 taking docetaxel, 43 taking paclitaxel). Results: Two SNPs associated with docetaxel toxicity were identified: CYP3A4*1B with infusion-related reactions; and ERCC1 Gln504Lys with mucositis (p ≤ 0.01). Regarding paclitaxel toxicity: CYP2C8 HapC and CYP2C8 rs1934951 were associated with anemia; and ERCC1 Gln504Lys with neuropathy (p ≤ 0.01). Conclusion: Genes involved in DNA repair mechanisms and reactive oxygen species levels influence taxane toxicity in cance…
Relationship Between Thymidylate Synthase and p53 and Response to FEC Versus Taxane Adjuvant Chemotherapy for Breast Carcinoma
2011
Many drugs can be used for adjuvant therapy of breast cancer, including anthracyclines, cyclophosphamide, 5-fluorouracil (5-fU) and, recently, taxanes (TXT) have shown promising results. 5-FU blocks thymidylate synthase (TS) which cross-links p53 mRNA, inhibiting its synthesis. TS overexpression is one of the main mechanisms involved in 5-FU drug resistance. Enough p53 mutations can confer resistance to chemotherapy using anthracyclines and 5-FU, while are associated with improved responses to TXT. The aim of this study was to examine the TS and p53 levels in tumor samples and to compare the efficacy of FEC (5-FU, epirubicin, cyclophosphamide) and TXT chemotherapy in a group of patients wit…

Innovative Non-Thermal Technologies for Recovery and Valorization of Value-Added Products from Crustacean Processing By-Products—An Opportunity for a…
2021
The crustacean processing industry has experienced significant growth over recent decades resulting in the production of a great number of by-products. Crustacean by-products contain several valuable components such as proteins, lipids, and carotenoids, especially astaxanthin and chitin. When isolated, these valuable compounds are characterized by bioactivities such as anti-microbial, antioxidant, and anti-cancer ones, and that could be used as nutraceutical ingredients or additives in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Different innovative non-thermal technologies have appeared as promising, safe, and efficient tools to recover these valuable compounds. This review aims at …
Damming an electronic energy reservoir: ion-regulated electronic energy shuttling in a [2]rotaxane
2021
We demonstrate the first example of bidirectional reversible electronic energy transfer (REET) between the mechanically bonded components of a rotaxane. Our prototypical system was designed such that photoexcitation of a chromophore in the axle results in temporary storage of electronic energy in a quasi-isoenergetic “reservoir” chromophore in the macrocycle. Over time, the emissive state of the axle is repopulated from this reservoir, resulting in long-lived, delayed luminescence. Importantly, we show that cation binding in the cavity formed by the mechanical bond perturbs the axle chromophore energy levels, modulating the REET process, and ultimately providing a luminescence read-out of c…
Indicaxanthin inhibits NADPH oxidase (NOX)-1 activation and NF-κB-dependent release of inflammatory mediators and prevents the increase of epithelial…
2014
Dietary redox-active/antioxidant phytochemicals may help control or mitigate the inflammatory response in chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In the present study, the anti-inflammatory activity of indicaxanthin (Ind), a pigment from the edible fruit of cactus pear (Opuntia ficus-indica, L.), was shown in an IBD model consisting of a human intestinal epithelial cell line (Caco-2 cells) stimulated by IL-1β, a cytokine known to play a major role in the initiation and amplification of inflammatory activity in IBD. The exposure of Caco-2 cells to IL-1β brought about the activation of NADPH oxidase (NOX-1) and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to activate intracellular signal…
Prognostic and Predictive Significance of Pharmacogenetic Analysis in Patients with Carcinomas of Unknown Primary (CAUP)
2012
ABSTRACT Purpose To investigate the prognostic/predictive significance of the expression of BRCA1, ERCC1, RRM1, TOPO-I, TOPO-IIa, TOPO-IIb, TXR1 TYMS and HIF1a mRNA in patients with Carcinomas of Unknown Primary (CaUP). Material and methods Ninety-three patients with CaUP and available tumoral samples diagnosed in three institutions were included in the study. The mRNA levels of the target genes were determined by quantitative real-time PCR from microdissected cells derived from patients' tumoral specimens. β-actin and PGK1 were used as reference genes. Results Successful amplification of at least one gene was achieved in all samples. BRCA1, ERCC1, HIF1a and TXR1 were amplified in all sampl…
