Do tax policies discriminate against female traders? A gender framework to study informal marketplaces in Nigeria

2022

Scholars have long debated formalizing the informal sector through taxation, but how do these processes affect gender inequalities? Our study in Nigerian markets contributes a gender framework to the equitable taxation literature on formalization. The study draws on a survey of 451 traders in 12 markets, key informant interviews, and ethnographic research in four markets of two states. We find that in at least two situations taxation policies discriminated against women implicitly: (1) male tax collectors had higher incidences of harassment on all traders and (2) taxing traders with flat taxes penalized women, as they earned less than men but were taxed the same.长期以来,学者们一直在辩论通过税收将非正式部门正规化,但…

A Strategic Management Approach to the Problems of EU taxation

2004

This paper adopts a strategic management approach (objectives, strategy, structure, control) to the study of the European Union's taxation problems. Union of States have some strengths vis-a-vis individual States. However, to ensure that all States benefit, they need constant redistribution. As opposed to fiscal problems of unitary states, Unions of States have additional problems related to their differentiated organizational form, and hence they need integrating control mechanisms. This paper studies the EU taxation in view of the above notions common to the literature on fiscal federalism. We find that a strategic management approach can be applied to highlight the problems of taxation i…

Permanent establishment in corporate taxation in the digital era

2020

Digital economy has significantly grew in the past 15 years, and currently it already accounts for more than 50 percent of the whole market capitalization worldwide. There is no longer a need for physical place to generate profits from the particular jurisdiction if business activity is digital. Nonetheless, the international taxation rules of allocating taxation rights for business profits to non-resident jurisdiction has not changed in way to tackle substantial economic presence, without fixed place of business. Thus, resulting in harmful use of permanent establishment principle for tax planning purposes, which has led to profit shifting away from the high-tax jurisdiction to low-tax juri…

2020

Tax evasion is a crime that harms the national economies, society and indirectly affects all the residents of each state. The main objectives of this research are to identify the regulatory challenges of the non-precedent technology, to analyse the applicability of the current EU legislation aimed at tax evasion prevention to the exploitation of cryptocurrencies, and to assess the recommendations of academics and international organizations for a possible future regulation. This resea…

Digital age and corporate taxation. European Union on the way to create a unilateral digital taxation regime

2019

The digitalization of the economy has rapidly changed the outlook of the business models today. It is no longer necessary for an entity to be located within a country to generate enormous amounts of revenues deriving from it. At the same time, the corporate taxation principles have not changed in order to adopt to this situation- when establishing the place of taxation they do not take into the consideration where the consumers are located. Thereby, an unfair treatment towards Member States has been created as today large revenues for big tech companies can be created within their territory without having a burden to pay a tax. Answering to the global discussion the European Commission has …

Strategic interactions on differentiated markets and public policies

2017

In economy, the competition analysis among firms have a significance importance because of the complexity of some elements. This thesis examines the strategic interactions on differentiated markets in general equilibrium while proposing the public policies to reduce the distortions due to the imperfect behaviors. This thesis takes into account the differentiation of products in order to obtain the new conclusions and/or to extend those existing. We thus pursues two objectives. Fisrt, the construction of a model of imperfect competition on differentiated markets in a general equilibrium framework. Second, the evaluation of the consequences of the model in terms of economic policies. At begin…
