An exceptional outbreak of the burrowing bug Macroscytus brunneus occurred in summer 2017 on Linosa island (Pelagian Islands, Sicily). Huge numbers of specimens, attracted to the lights of the small village, interfered heavily with human activities for almost three months. The few precedent cases reported in literature are reviewed.
An outbreak of HBV and HCV infection in a paediatric oncology ward: Epidemiological investigations and prevention of further spread

Hospital-acquired hepatitis B (HBV) and C virus (HCV) infections continue to occur despite increased awareness of this problem among the medical community. One hundred six patients were infected in a haematology oncology ward for children, over the time period 1996 to 2000. Serum samples from 45 such patients and 3 from infected medical personnel were used for nucleic acid amplification. HBV core, as well as HCV core and hypervariable region 1 (HVR1) nucleotide sequences, were analysed by phylogenetic tree analysis, in order to characterise the epidemiological pattern of viral transmission on the ward. In 1973, Feinstone and co-workers [52] were the first to report the visualization of virus-like particles by immune electron microscopy in acute phase stool specimens of human volunteers who developed hepatitis following inoculation with MS-1 strain of hepatitis A virus [18]. Soon thereafter morphologically identical particles were recovered from the stool of individuals acquiring hepatitis during natural outbreaks of the disease [39, 64].
Finite size spectrum of SU(N) principal chiral field from discrete Hirota dynamics

Using recently proposed method of discrete Hirota dynamics for integrable (1+1)D quantum field theories on a finite space circle of length L, we derive and test numerically a finite system of nonlinear integral equations for the exact spectrum of energies of SU(N)xSU(N) principal chiral field model as functions of m L, where m is the mass scale. We propose a determinant solution of the underlying Y-system, or Hirota equation, in terms of determinants (Wronskians) of NxN matrices parameterized by N-1 functions of the spectral parameter, with the known analytical properties at finite L. The Unification of Italy represented a political, educational and mathematical turning point; leading researchers worked to raise both the mathematical and political standard in Italy through their active role in the reform of the Italian educational system at the secondary as well as at the university levels. One of the aims was to adapt the elementary books of mathematics to the progress of mathematics, through the translation of new works too. Is large-scale rapid CoV-2 testing a substitute for lockdowns?

Background Various forms of contact restrictions have been adopted in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Around February 2021, rapid testing appeared as a new policy instrument. Some claim it may serve as a substitute for contact restrictions. We study the strength of this argument by evaluating the effects of a unique policy experiment: In March and April 2021, the city of Tübingen set up a testing scheme while relaxing contact restrictions. Methods We compare case rates in Tübingen county to an appropriately identified control unit. We employ the synthetic control method.
