Retrospective review of L3 myelomeningocele in three age groups: should posterolateral iliopsoas transfer still be indicated to stabilize the hip?

The data from 58 hips in 29 myelodysplastic children with L3 paralysis has been reviewed retrospectively. Posterolateral transfer of the iliopsoas (Sharrard technique) was performed on all hips to correct muscle imbalance between 1975 and 1992. The average length of follow-up was 21 years. Preoperatively, 58.6% of the hips were either subluxated or dislocated (these were surgically reduced at the same stage). Radiological assessment revealed that 91.4% of the hips were stable at preschool age and 84.5% in adolescence. Of the patients 86% were functional walkers at preschool age and 75.8% in adolescence. The external frame function in the control of pitch, register, and singing mode: Radiographic observations of a female singer

Summary This study investigates pitch control, register, and singing mode related movements of the laryngo-pharyngeal structures by radiographic methods. One trained female singer served as the subject. The results show that singing voice production involves complex movements in the laryngeal structures. Pitch related increase in the thyro-arytenoid distance (vocal fold length) is nonlinear, slowing down as pitch rises. Similar observations have been made earlier. At the highest pitches, a shortening of the distance can be seen, suggesting the use of alternative pitch control mechanisms. The influence of prestretch amplitude on the mechanical efficiency was examined with 5 subjects, who performed 5 different series of vertical jumps, each of which differed with respect to the mechanics of the knee joint action during the prestretch (eccentric) phase of the contact on the floor. Electromyographic activity was recorded from the major extensor muscles during the entire work period of 1 min per series. Abstract Background/Aims: To investigate host- and virus-related factors predictive of early and sustained alanine aminotransferase normalization after interferon therapy for HCV-related chronic liver disease, in an area where genotype 1 is highly prevalent.
