A Long-term Approach to Teachers' Legitimate Cultural Practices: Stability in a Time of Change?
2015
National audience; While the link between legitimate culture and categories of graduates has been redefined in recent years, how much is this also true for schoolteachers? Sharing many of the dynamics experienced by other graduates and facing changes in their sociological characteristics, primary and secondary school teachers may have developed new cultural practices. Using Ministry of Culture and Communication surveys, I demonstrate that variations over time in cinema and theatre attendance and regular book reading are not the same for "primary school teachers and comparable occupations," "teachers in secondary and tertiary education, scientific occupations" and other categories of graduat…
An Alternative Paradigm to Evaluate the Acquisition of the van Hiele Levels
1991
This article presents an alternative way of analyzing the van Hiele level of students’ geometrical reasoning. We evaluate the students’ answers, taking into account the van Hiele level they reflect and their mathematical accuracy. This gives us a description of how accomplished the students are in applying the procedures associated with each of the van Hiele levels and allows us to determine the students’ degree of acquisition of the van Hiele levels. In this way we obtain a clearer picture of the students’ geometrical reasoning than with the traditional assignment of one van Hiele level to the learners. An example of the application of this method is provided: We describe a test that evalu…

Sphères privée et professionnelle chez les enseignants du premier degré : comment priorisent-ils ?
2019
Private and professional lives among primary teachers: how they prioritize? Being a teacher in primary school seems far from allowing the articulation of work and private life in such a comfortable manner as seen in collective beliefs. In order to deconstruct the belief considering teachers as privileged, this contribution proposes, based on empirical results (an online survey with 21,642 responses), to report, first, how primary teachers prioritize their private or professional lives. Second, this paper highlights the reasons which lead them to favour one of the two fields, notably when priority is given to private life at the expense of professional life. Referring to the issue of work-fa…
The Garden and Landscape as an Interdisciplinary Resource Between Experimental Science and Artistic-Musical Expression: Analysis of Competence Develo…
2020
The garden is a major educational resource that can be used for all areas of knowledge from an interdisciplinary perspective as it reflects the complexity and interactions of the natural environment. This research was carried out in the academic years 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 with 418 participants of from the second, third, and fourth year of the Degree in Primary Education at the University of Valencia. The use of the garden and the landscape is analyzed as a non-formal context for training primary school teachers through sensory experiences that contribute to the development of scientific and artistic competencies. The study focused on the relationship between natural sounds and emotions t…

Stakeholder beliefs in English-medium instruction for young learners in Sweden
2018
While several studies have investigated English-medium instruction (EMI) or content and language integrated learning (CLIL) in Swedish upper secondary and tertiary education, few have investigated such programmes in Swedish primary schools. This paper explores perceptions among staff and students about affordances and constraints in the learning of content and languages, drawing on data from a larger longitudinal case study of an English-Swedish bilingual primary class during Grades 4-6. Data consisted of semi-structured interviews with a school leader, 12 teachers and 22 students as well as fieldnotes and photographs from classroom observations. Thematic analysis of the data revealed the b…
