Models of tax payments of performers of economic activity in Latvia
2019
Economic theory sources widely discuss the fiscal policy, the ways of encouraging economic development, improve the welfare of people, improve employment and promote progress by fiscal instruments. On one side, it is possible to use the expenditure policy, on the other side, tax revenue can be optimised by reducing tax gaps. State officials often view self-employment as a missed opportunity deserving more focused attention. The European Union also supports this position. The question of self-employment is important for performers of economic activity. The aim of the research: on the basis of theoretical (legislative) and empirical analysis to find out advantages and disadvantages of tax pay…
Fiscal policy as an instrument for reducing income inequality: case of Latvia
2020
With the help of fiscal policy, government may influence both overall demand and the disposable income of the population, as well as solve social equality challenges in the society by allocating income among different groups of population. Income inequality in Latvia, which is expressed by the Gini index of disposable income, is the third highest in the European Union, so the question about the most effective instruments for reducing income inequality is pressing. Inequality results in reduced efficiency of social capital and economic distribution, worsening of population health indicators, rising social tension, increased crime and rising poverty, which can have a negative impact on long-t…
CLIL Challenges : Secondary School CLIL Teachers’ Voices and Experienced Agency in Three European Contexts
2020
This qualitative interview study focuses on CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) teacher agency in three European contexts, Austria, Finland and Andalusia, Spain. The aim of the study is to understand how individual CLIL teachers experience their agency when encountering challenges in their work and to demonstrate the multifaceted quality of their agency. The study employs the Listening Guide method (Gilligan, 2015) to listen to the voices of three secondary school subject teachers from three diverse contexts. The analysis shows that CLIL challenges both empowered and disempowered the teachers depending on how meaningful they found their work and what their possibilities to act w…
Teachers’ Identity Tensions and Related Coping Strategies : Interaction With the Career Stages and Socio-Political Context
2022
When external requirements conflict with teachers’ personal beliefs and values, the resulting internal struggles can lead to identity tensions. Contributing to discussion on teachers’ identity development in a challenging context, this study investigated teacher identity tensions and related coping strategies in Hong Kong. We conducted 21 semi-structured interviews with qualified teachers and then performed a deductive thematic analysis of the data. We categorised the identity tensions as positioned on the micro or macro level, and distinguished the coping strategies as emotion-focused or problem-focused behaviours. The identity tensions and related coping strategies seemed to be associated…

School and choice: An ethnography of a primary school with bilingual classes
2010
Based on a one-year ethnographic study of a primary school in Finland with specialised classes in Finnish and English (referred to as bilingual classes by research participants), this research traces how nationed, ethnicised, classed and gendered differences are produced and gain meaning in school. I examine several aspects of these differences: the ways teachers and parents make sense of school and of school choice; the repertoires of self put forward by teachers, parents and pupils of the bilingual classes, and the institutional and classroom practices in Sunny Lane School (pseudonym). My purpose is to examine how the construction of differentness is related to the policy of school choice…
Motivational strategies used by English teachers : students’ opinions
2017
Fostering Heuristic Strategies in Mathematics Teacher Education
2018
International audience; The “double discontinuity” stated by Felix Klein 1908 is still relevant in the mathematics teacher education at German universities. We are developing a course approach, which is intended to bridge the double discontinuity in a didactic dimension. We offer additional learning opportunities for teacher students, which are characterized by clarifications of mathematical methods that are fundamental to the regular lecture contents. We focus especially on reflections on heuristic strategies, which are the core part of mathematical methods according to George Pólya. Feedback shows that students consider our approach as helpful in the transition from school to university.
Zwischen Rom und Silicon Valley. Papst Franziskus angesichts des technischen Fortschritts
2019
