How does serendipity affect diversity in recommender systems? A serendipity-oriented greedy algorithm

2018

Most recommender systems suggest items that are popular among all users and similar to items a user usually consumes. As a result, the user receives recommendations that she/he is already familiar with or would find anyway, leading to low satisfaction. To overcome this problem, a recommender system should suggest novel, relevant and unexpected i.e., serendipitous items. In this paper, we propose a serendipity-oriented, reranking algorithm called a serendipity-oriented greedy (SOG) algorithm, which improves serendipity of recommendations through feature diversification and helps overcome the overspecialization problem. To evaluate our algorithm, we employed the only publicly available datase…

Topology Inference and Signal Representation Using Dictionary Learning

2019

This paper presents a Joint Graph Learning and Signal Representation algorithm, called JGLSR, for simultaneous topology learning and graph signal representation via a learned over-complete dictionary. The proposed algorithm alternates between three main steps: sparse coding, dictionary learning, and graph topology inference. We introduce the “transformed graph” which can be considered as a projected graph in the transform domain spanned by the dictionary atoms. Simulation results via synthetic and real data show that the proposed approach has a higher performance when compared to the well-known algorithms for joint undirected graph topology inference and signal representation, when there is…

SCCF Parameter and Similarity Measure Optimization and Evaluation

2019

Neighborhood-based Collaborative Filtering (CF) is one of the most successful and widely used recommendation approaches; however, it suffers from major flaws especially under sparse environments. Traditional similarity measures used by neighborhood-based CF to find similar users or items are not suitable in sparse datasets. Sparse Subspace Clustering and common liking rate in CF (SCCF), a recently published research, proposed a tunable similarity measure oriented towards sparse datasets; however, its performance can be maximized and requires further analysis and investigation. In this paper, we propose and evaluate the performance of a new tuning mechanism, using the Mean Absolute Error (MA…

Energy efficient optimisation for large‐scale multiple‐antenna system with WPT

2018

In this study, an energy-efficient optimisation scheme for a large-scale multiple-antenna system with wireless power transfer (WPT) is presented. In the considered system, the user is charged by a base station with a large number of antennas via downlink WPT and then utilises the received power to carry out uplink data transmission. Novel antenna selection, time allocation and power allocation schemes are presented to optimise the energy efficiency of the overall system. In addition, the authors also consider channel state information cannot be perfectly obtained when designing the resource allocation schemes. The non-linear fractional programming-based algorithm is utilised to address the …

A Novel Priority-Based Ambulance-to-Traffic Light Communication for Delay Reduction in Emergency Rescue Operations

2019

Rescue operations are very critical and sensitive. Only one-second delay could make a serious difference between life and death. Therefore, the delay in rescue operations must be reduced as much as possible. The siren signal can be used to warn other vehicles nearby the ambulance. However, it has no impact on the traffic lights, which is normally a main cause of delay in rescue operations. For this reason, many ambulances get stuck and experience long delay at the intersections, which should not happen by any means. To enhance the rescue operations, this paper proposes a novel Priority-based Ambulance-to-Traffic Light Communication (PATCom). PATCom allows information exchanging between traf…

Towards Efficient Control of Mobile Network-Enabled UAVs

2019

| openaire: EC/H2020/815191/EU//PriMO-5G The efficient control of mobile network-enabled unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is targeted in this paper. In particular, a downlink scenario is considered, in which control messages are sent to UAVs via cellular base stations (BSs). Unlike terrestrial user equipment (UEs), UAVs perceive a large number of BSs, which can lead to increased interference causing poor or even unacceptable throughput. This paper proposes a framework for efficient control of UAVs. First, a communication model is introduced for flying UAVs taking into account interference, path loss and fast fading. The characteristics of UAVs make such model different compared to traditiona…

The Influence of Human Walking Activities on the Doppler Characteristics of Non-stationary Indoor Channel Models

2019

This paper analyzes the time-variant (TV) Doppler power spectral density of a 3D non-stationary fixed-to-fixed indoor channel simulator after feeding it with realistic trajectories of a walking person. The trajectories of the walking person are obtained by simulating a full body musculoskeletal model in OpenSim. We provide expressions of the TV Doppler frequencies caused by these trajectories. Then, we present the complex channel gain consisting of fixed scatterers and a cluster of moving scatterers. After that, we use the concept of the spectrogram to analyze the TV Doppler power spectral density of the complex channel gain. Finally, we present expressions of the TV mean Doppler shift and …

A method to estimate the path gains and propagation delays of underwater acoustic channels using the arrival phase information of the multipath compo…

2017

Abstract We propose a method for the estimation of the channel parameters of underwater acoustic channels (UACs) by using a pseudo-noise (PN) sequence. For the channel sounding, the PN sequence is coherently modulated on a carrier frequency by using a binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) modulation scheme. For the demodulation, the arrival phases of the received BPSK signals must be known at the receiver. In practice, however, the arrival phases of the received signal are unknown. We propose to demodulate the received BPSK signal by using an hypothetical arrival phase, which will be increased from 0 to 2 π . The demodulated signal obtained by using the hypothetical arrival phase is then correla…

Modelling, Analysis, and Simulation of the Micro-Doppler Effect in Wideband Indoor Channels with Confirmation Through Pendulum Experiments

2020

This paper is about designing a 3D no n-stationary wideband indoor channel model for radio-frequency sensing. The proposed channel model allows for simulating the time-variant (TV) characteristics of the received signal of indoor channel in the presence of a moving object. The moving object is modelled by a point scatterer which travels along a trajectory. The trajectory is described by the object&rsquo
