In this thesis we have studied experimentally electronic transport in mesoscopic hybrid polypyrrole-gold devices and single multiwalled carbon nanotube devices. A novel fabrication technique for mesoscopic conducting hybrid polymer-gold films has been developed. The hybrid polymer-gold films have been fabricated by electrochemical deposition of polypyrrole on a gold nanoisland layer. Temperature dependence of conductance show that the dominant transport mechanism in the polypyrrole-gold films is variable range hopping in the temperature range from 20 K to 300 K. Evidence that water transmits Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 infections to eels

Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 is classically considered an obligate eel pathogen. However, it has recently been associated with one human septicemic case. In this paper, the opportunistic behavior of this pathogen is discussed. The bacterium can survive alone in brackish water or attached to eel surfaces for at least 14 days. It is able to spread through water and infect healthy eels by using skin as a portal of entry. These results suggest that water and infected eels may act as reservoirs of infection. Abstract To improve the chemical stability of high temperature proton conductors based on barium cerate, electrolyte powders doped with different amounts of niobium were synthesized by the citrate–nitrate auto-combustion method. Pure single phases of BaCe 0.9− x Nb x Y 0.1 O 3− x (BCYN, 0.03 ≤ x ≤ 0.12) were obtained by thermal treatment at 1000 °C. Sintering at 1450 °C for 10 h produced dense pellets. X-ray absorption spectroscopy allowed to define the dopant ion insertion site and the co-dopant valency. International audience; Edible films based on gelatin and chitosan have high gas and aroma barrier properties. This study focused on their capability to sorbed/retain aroma compounds (1-hexanal, 2-hexen-1-ol, 1-hexanol, 3-hexanone and phenol) at three relative humidity level (≤2%, 53% or 84% RH). Whatever the relative humidity condition, the order of sorption is keton (3-hexanone) < aldehyde (1-hexanal) < aliphatic alcohols (2-hexen-1-ol and 1-hexanol) < phenol. Microstructure and characteristic properties of dogfish skin gelatin gels prepared by freeze/spray-drying methods

International audience; The effects of two pretreatments (microwaves or oven-drying) on the dogfish (Squalus acanthias) skin as well as two drying processes (freeze-drying or spray-drying) on the extracted gelatins were studied. Thus six types of gelatins were obtained, three of which were freeze-dried (FG) and the others were spray-dried (SG), from the untreated skin (US), microwaves-pretreated skin (MS) and oven-pretreated skin (OS). The highest yield (8.67%) was obtained for the OSFG, while the lowest one (3.06%) was measured for the OSSG. The suitability of sunflower oil-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) based oleogel obtained by emulsion template approach as partial cocoa butter (CB) replacer in chocolates was investigated. A level of 50% CB replacement was optimum, as higher level of replacement affected the sensory appearance in comparison to the control chocolate (without added oleogel). Four levels of HPMC (0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2%) were considered. Candida albicans ATCC 26555 switched at high frequency (10(-1) to 10(-3)) between several phenotypes identified by colony morphology on a defined mineral amino-acid-containing agar medium supplemented with arginine and zinc (LAZ medium). When cells taken from colonies exhibiting distinct morphologies were plated directly onto LAZ agar, spontaneous conversion to all the variant phenotypes occurred at combined frequencies of 2.1 x 10(-1) to 9.5 x 10(-3).
