Perturbations of spacetime: gauge transformations and gauge invariance at second order and beyond

1996

We consider in detail the problem of gauge dependence that exists in relativistic perturbation theory, going beyond the linear approximation and treating second and higher order perturbations. We first derive some mathematical results concerning the Taylor expansion of tensor fields under the action of one-parameter families (not necessarily groups) of diffeomorphisms. Second, we define gauge invariance to an arbitrary order $n$. Finally, we give a generating formula for the gauge transformation to an arbitrary order and explicit rules to second and third order. This formalism can be used in any field of applied general relativity, such as cosmological and black hole perturbations, as well …

Ewald sum for hydrodynamic interactions of rigid spherical microswimmers

2018

We derive the Ewald sum decomposition of the grand mobility tensor which captures the hydrodynamic interactions in an infinite suspension of rigid spherical microswimmers. The grand mobility tensor connects the motion of an individual swimmer to the active and passive forces and torques acting on all the swimmers, and it is calculated based on a minimal microswimmer model incorporating the swimmers' finite body size. Our results have direct applications to the Stokesian dynamics simulations of an infinite suspension of rigid-bodied microswimmers. They also provide a platform to develop more advanced methods such as particle-mesh-Ewald-sum and accelerated Stokesian dynamics simulations.

Tensor and Vector Analyzing Powers in the Reaction 2H(e,e’p)

1994

The first experiment to be performed an the internal target facility of NIKHEF-K will be a study of eleclron-induced quasi-elastic proton knock-out from tensor-polarized deuterium. Here, we present the first results from the experimental tests as well as the results of a Monte Carlo simulation, which show the feasibility of the proposed experiment, even at modest luminosities.

An intrinsic characterization of 2+2 warped spacetimes

2010

We give several equivalent conditions that characterize the 2+2 warped spacetimes: imposing the existence of a Killing-Yano tensor $A$ subject to complementary algebraic restrictions; in terms of the projector $v$ (or of the canonical 2-form $U$) associated with the 2-planes of the warped product. These planes are principal planes of the Weyl and/or Ricci tensors and can be explicitly obtained from them. Therefore, we obtain the necessary and sufficient (local) conditions for a metric tensor to be a 2+2 warped product. These conditions exclusively involve explicit concomitants of the Riemann tensor. We present a similar analysis for the conformally 2+2 product spacetimes and give an invaria…

Generalized Bloch spheres form-qubit states

2006

m-Qubit states are imbedded in $\mathfrak{Cl}_{2^m}$ Clifford algebras. Their probability spectra then depend on $O(2m)$ or $O(2m+1)$ invariants. Parameter domains for $O(2m(+1))-$ vector and tensor configurations, generalizing the notion of a Bloch sphere, are derived.

Systematic construction of spin liquids on the square lattice from tensor networks with SU(2) symmetry

2016

We elaborate a simple classification scheme of all rank-5 SU(2)-spin rotational symmetric tensors according to i) the on-site physical spin-$S$, (ii) the local Hilbert space $V^{\otimes 4}$ of the four virtual (composite) spins attached to each site and (iii) the irreducible representations of the $C_{4v}$ point group of the square lattice. We apply our scheme to draw a complete list of all SU(2)-symmetric translationally and rotationally-invariant Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS) with bond dimension $D\leqslant 6$. All known SU(2)-symmetric PEPS on the square lattice are recovered and simple generalizations are provided in some cases. More generally, to each of our symmetry class can…

Description and evolution of anisotropy in superfluid vortex tangles with counterflow and rotation

2006

We examine several vectorial and tensorial descriptions of the geometry of turbulent vortex tangles. We study the anisotropy in rotating counterflow experiments, in which the geometry of the tangle is especially interesting because of the opposite effects of rotation, which orients the vortices, and counterflow, which randomizes them. We propose to describe the anisotropy and the polarization of the vortex tangle through a tensor, which contains the first and second moments of the distribution of the unit vector ${\mathbf{s}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ locally tangent to the vortex lines. We use an analogy with paramagnetism to estimate the anisotropy, the average polarization, the polarization fluc…

Helicity-coupling amplitudes in tensor formalism.

1993

The decay of a particle with spin to two other particles with spin is best described in the helicity formalism. It is the purpose of this paper to show that the helicity-coupling amplitudes, which appear in the angular distributions, can be expressed in terms of the covariant amplitudes in the tensor formalism. This allows for a systematic derivation for the energy dependence of the helicity-coupling amplitudes within the framework of the tensor formalism. The concept of pure intrinsic spin has been developed in the tensor formalism, for decays involving two spins in the final state, in order to bring the formalism to a form comparable to the standard $\ensuremath{\ell}S$-coupling scheme. Holographic encoding of universality in corner spectra

2017

In numerical simulations of classical and quantum lattice systems, 2d corner transfer matrices (CTMs) and 3d corner tensors (CTs) are a useful tool to compute approximate contractions of infinite-size tensor networks. In this paper we show how the numerical CTMs and CTs can be used, {\it additionally\/}, to extract universal information from their spectra. We provide examples of this for classical and quantum systems, in 1d, 2d and 3d. Our results provide, in particular, practical evidence for a wide variety of models of the correspondence between $d$-dimensional quantum and $(d+1)$-dimensional classical spin systems. We show also how corner properties can be used to pinpoint quantum phase …

Spin structures of the pion and nucleon

2012

We present recent studies on the transverse spin densities of the pion and nucleon within the framework of the chiral quark-(soliton) model, based on the calculation of the electromagnetic and tensor form factors of the pion and the nucleon. The results for the transverse spin densities of the quark inside a pion are in good agreement with the recent lattice data, while those of the nucleon show similar features to the lattice results. We also present the first results of the transverse spin densities of the strange quark inside a nucleon.
