Relationship between UVB and broadband solar radiation in Spain
2014
The daily values of UVB irradiation (290–315 nm), IUVB, and the broadband total irradiation (300–2800 nm), IT, measured on a horizontal plane have been correlated for the period 2000–2008 at 16 measurement sites in Spain. The results have been compared with the daily experimental values registered at the same sites during the period 2009–2011. The coefficients of determination R2 obtained by applying a linear regression are higher than 0.88 for all sites and increase to 0.94 when using a quadratic regression. When all data are considered together, the values of R2 are 0.91 and 0.97 for the linear and quadratic regressions, respectively. Three different clearness indices, which are dimension…
Control of dataset bias in combined Affymetrix cohorts of triple negative breast cancer
2014
AbstractHeterogenous subtypes of breast cancer need to be analyzed separately. Pooling of datasets can provide reasonable sample sizes but dataset bias is an important concern. We assembled a combined dataset of 579 Affymetrix microarrays from triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) in Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) series GSE31519. We developed a method for selecting comparable datasets and to control for the amount of dataset bias of individual probesets.
Predicting the Significance of Necessity
2019
With Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA), a necessity effect is estimated by calculating the amount of empty space in the upper-left corner in a plot with a predictor X and an outcome Y, and recently a method for testing the statistical significance of the necessity effect through permutation has been proposed. In the present simulation study, this method was found to give significant results already with a very weak true population necessity effect, i.e., exhibit high power, unless the sample size is very small. However, in some situations the significance of the necessity effect tends to increase with increased degree of sufficiency, which is paradoxical for a method whose objective is to …
A cautionary note on the finite sample behavior of maximal reliability.
2019
Several calls have been made for replacing coefficient α with more contemporary model-based reliability coefficients in psychological research. Under the assumption of unidimensional measurement scales and independent measurement errors, two leading alternatives are composite reliability and maximal reliability. Of these two, the maximal reliability statistic, or equivalently Hancock's H, has received a significant amount of attention in recent years. The difference between composite reliability and maximal reliability is that the former is a reliability index for a scale mean (or unweighted sum), whereas the latter estimates the reliability of a scale score where indicators are weighted di…
Methodology and technology for peripheral and central blood pressure and blood pressure variability measurement: current status and future directions…
2016
Office blood pressure measurement has been the basis for hypertension evaluation for almost a century. However, the evaluation of blood pressure out of the office using ambulatory or self-home monitoring is now strongly recommended for the accurate diagnosis in many, if not all, cases with suspected hypertension. Moreover, there is evidence that the variability of blood pressure might offer prognostic information that is independent of the average blood pressure level. Recently, advancement in technology has provided noninvasive evaluation of central (aortic) blood pressure, which might have attributes that are additive to the conventional brachial blood pressure measurement. This position …
Polymere acroleine. III. Mittteilung. Oximierung und quantitative Bestimmung der Aldehydgruppen
1956
Th. The oximation reaction of disacryl is described. The conditions of a quantitative determination of aldehyde function in polymeric acroleins have been investigated. It has been shown, that disacryl and an other polyacrolein, prepared by a redox-polyme…
Training young adults with intellectual disability to read critically on the internet.
2019
Background Young people with intellectual disability (ID) are becoming frequent Internet users, but they present difficulties selecting reliable Internet sources. Methods The present authors tested an instructional programme aimed at increasing skills to evaluate information from the Internet of 33 young adult students with intellectual disability enrolled in special needs education (19.4 years). The programme was composed of different web pages that provided conflicting views on a controversial topic. Students participated in small group discussions supported with Wh-question graphic organizers and contrasting cases during seven sessions. Results Differences between pre- and post-tests ind…
Cell fate regulation upon DNA damage : p53 Serine 46 kinases pave the cell death road
2019
Mild and massive DNA damage are differentially integrated into the cellular signaling networks and, in consequence, provoke different cell fate decisions. After mild damage, the tumor suppressor p53 directs the cellular response to cell cycle arrest, DNA repair, and cell survival, whereas upon severe damage, p53 drives the cell death response. One posttranslational modification of p53, phosphorylation at Serine 46, selectively occurs after severe DNA damage and is envisioned as a marker of the cell death response. However, the molecular mechanism of action of the p53 Ser46 phospho-isomer, the molecular timing of this phosphorylation event, and its activating effects on apoptosis and ferropt…
Role Of S-Nitrosylation In The Extrinsic Apoptotic Signalling Pathway In Cancer.
2015
One of the key features of tumour cells is the acquisition of resistance to apoptosis. Thus, determining therapeutic strategies that circumvent apoptotic resistance and result in tumor regression is a challenge. One strategy to induce apoptosis is to activate death receptor signalling pathways. Members of the Tumor Necrosis Factor TNF-family death receptors ligand (TRAIL, FasL and TNF-α) can originate from immune and non-immune cells. Death receptors, engaged by cognate ligands, can initiate multiple signaling pathways, which can generate diverse outcomes, including non-apoptosis-related signal. Knowledge on the molecular mechanisms (that determine death or survival of tumour cells) followi…
Cell cycle independent role of Cyclin E during neural cell fate specification in Drosophila is mediated by its regulation of Prospero function
2009
AbstractDuring development, neural progenitor cells or neuroblasts generate a great intra- and inter-segmental diversity of neuronal and glial cell types in the nervous system. In thoracic segments of the embryonic central nervous system of Drosophila, the neuroblast NB6-4t undergoes an asymmetric first division to generate a neuronal and a glial sublineage, while abdominal NB6-4a divides once symmetrically to generate only 2 glial cells. We had earlier reported a critical function for the G1 cyclin, CyclinE (CycE) in regulating asymmetric cell division in NB6-4t. Here we show that (i) this function of CycE is independent of its role in cell cycle regulation and (ii) the two functions are m…
