Decrease in blood pressure during continuous positive airway pressure treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea: still searching for predictive factors

2019

High blood pressure (BP) and non-dipping 24-hour BP profile may help to predict BP decrease after obstructive sleep apnoea treatment by CPAP. However, specific, highly reproducible traits associated with BP responsiveness to CPAP must still be identified.http://bit.ly/2LbS4uV

Eligibility of real-life patients with copd for inclusion in rcts: A commentary

2017

Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) are performed to provide evidence to support treatment decisions. Based on the nature of those studies and the need to avoid confounding factors, it has been argued that the population selected in RCTs only partially represents the real-life population. This assumption casts doubts on the applicability of the results provided by RCTs in the management of individuals with an established diagnosis of COPD, and advocates the need for complementary studies with a pragmatic design. Herein, we comment on the recent article published by Halpin and colleagues on the Journal [Halpin et al, Respir Res 17:120, 2016], in which higher rates of inclusions in RCTs for COP…

Eligibility for treatment with omalizumab in Italy and Germany.

2013

Summary Omalizumab is an add-on therapy for patients with uncontrolled severe allergic asthma. In Europe, patients must fulfil a number of additional criteria to become eligible for omalizumab therapy, creating a challenge for epidemiology studies to quantify the potential patient pool. Thus, and in the absence of robust data, the number of omalizumab-eligible patients has remained unclear. To assess eligible patient numbers, a chart-audit design approach was employed to measure epidemiology variables based on patient-level data. 770 patient charts were reviewed in designated towns in Germany and Italy, in collaboration with >200 primary care physicians (PCPs) and respiratory specialists (R…

DFHRS-based computation of quasi-geoid of Latvia

2013

In geodesy, civil engineering and related fields high accuracy coordinate determination is needed, for that reason GNSS technologies plays important role. Transformation from GNSS derived ellipsoidal heights to orthometric or normal heights requires a high accuracy geoid or quasi-geoid model, respectively the accuracy of the currently used Latvian gravimetric quasi-geoid model LV'98 is 6–8 cm. The objective of this work was to calculate an improved quasi-geoid (QGeoid) for Latvia. The computation was performed by applying the DFHRS software. This paper discusses obtained geoid height reference surface, its comparisons to other geoid models, fitting point statistics and quality control based…

Expression profiling of glial genes during Drosophila embryogenesis

2006

AbstractIn the central nervous system of Drosophila, the induction of the glial cell fate is dependent on the transcription factor glial cells missing (gcm). Though a considerable number of other genes have been shown to be expressed in all or in subsets of glial cells, the course of glial cell differentiation and subtype specification is only poorly understood. This prompted us to design a whole genome microarray approach comparing gcm gain-of-function and, for the first time, gcm loss-of-function genetics to wildtype in time course experiments along embryogenesis. The microarray data were analyzed with special emphasis on the temporal profile of differential regulation. A comparison of bo…

Health-related quality of life after bariatric surgery: a systematic review of prospective long-term studies

2014

Author´s accepted manuscript Impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is common in bariatric surgery candidates and is often one of the motivating factors for seeking bariatric surgery. Although many studies have reported changes in HRQoL after bariatric surgery, few are long-term prospective studies and no systematic review has been conducted. A systematic database search identified studies reporting HRQoL preoperatively and ≥ 5 years after bariatric surgery. Change in HRQoL over time was the outcome variable, divided into primary and secondary outcomes. Seven prospective cohort studies met the inclusion criteria. Eight HRQoL measures and six surgical methods were identified. Longte…

Understanding Civic Engagement on Social Media Based on Users’ Motivation to Contribute

2021

Social media offer various opportunities for civic engagement by, e.g., liking, sharing, or posting relevant content. Users’ motivation to contribute to relevant topics is quite divers and can stem from an intrinsic motivation to do good or external incentives such as being recognised and rewarded by other users. In our study, we adopt self-determination theory, which defines motivation as broad continuum ranging from intrinsic motivation to external regulation. We conducted a quantitative survey with 667 Facebook users to identify how the different kinds of motivation impact the users’ behaviour in terms of reading, liking, sharing, commenting, and posting topics relevant to civic engageme…

Lattice-constrained parametrizations of form factors for semileptonic and rare radiative B decays

1997

We describe the form factors for B to rho lepton neutrino and B to K* gamma decays with just two parameters and the two form factors for B to pi lepton neutrino with a further two or three parameters. The parametrizations are consistent with heavy quark symmetry, kinematic constraints and lattice results, which we use to determine the parameters. In addition, we test versions of the parametrizations consistent (or not) with light-cone sum rule scaling relations at q^2=0.

The impact of study design and diagnostic approach in a large multi-centre ADHD study. Part 1: ADHD symptom patterns

2011

Contains fulltext : 96439.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) BACKGROUND: The International Multi-centre ADHD Genetics (IMAGE) project with 11 participating centres from 7 European countries and Israel has collected a large behavioural and genetic database for present and future research. Behavioural data were collected from 1068 probands with the combined type of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD-CT) and 1446 'unselected' siblings. The aim was to analyse the IMAGE sample with respect to demographic features (gender, age, family status, and recruiting centres) and psychopathological characteristics (diagnostic subtype, symptom frequencies, age at symptom detection, and com…
