This volume is the result of a collaboration between the two Universities of Palermo and Göttingen, who have been cooperating for a decade, implementing an intense exchange of experiences in the field of teaching and research, as part of the double degree in master's degree in archeology. We took the opportunity to study some aspects of archaeological research on Roman Sicily, after twenty years of intense activity on the island both by Italian universities and several foreign universities. The title of the seminar with its binary terms, city and territory, monumentalization and economy, crisis and development, aims to reflect the complexity of the situation of the island in Roman times.

Metropolitan transformations of the Palermo as a Mediterranean city, guided by envisioning it as a ‘fluid’ gateway city, have been seen as an example for the planning of other such cities in Italy and Europe. Starting from sociologist Anne-Marie Green?s idea of ?common space?, and from Hans Robert Hauss? reception theory, the improvisation workshop is thought to be a way of transforming the practices of reception, in order to modify the nature of the culture of listening of each listener. Four research axis are, then, proposed, from the validation of the personal experience of the participants to the reception of the instant?s surprise as a factor of education, including the research of communicational tools specific to reception of music, capable of captivating the listeners with the original aspects of the unknown musical territories.

Italian cities have undergone in the past century a rapid development which has generated abandoned areas within its limits. Many of these places are now uncultivated and rich in spontaneous vegetation. The article reports the relationship between a wild area in eastern Rome, the ex-SNIA-Viscosa Lake, from which the artistic group Stalker has started some walking experiences. During the crossing of the wild spaces that characterize this part of the city, questions emerged related to the link between a community and unpredictable nature, the search for new approaches to conservation and the planning of natural spaces in the city.
