Characterization of the atmospheric muon flux in IceCube

2015

Muons produced in atmospheric cosmic ray showers account for the by far dominant part of the event yield in large-volume underground particle detectors. The IceCube detector, with an instrumented volume of about a cubic kilometer, has the potential to conduct unique investigations on atmospheric muons by exploiting the large collection area and the possibility to track particles over a long distance. Through detailed reconstruction of energy deposition along the tracks, the characteristics of muon bundles can be quantified, and individual particles of exceptionally high energy identified. Protein knots, mostly regarded as intriguing oddities, are gradually being recognized as significant structural motifs. Seven distinctly knotted folds have already been identified. It is by and large unclear how these exceptional structures actually fold, and only recently, experiments and simulations have begun to shed some light on this issue. In checking the new protein structures submitted to the Protein Data Bank, we encountered the most complex and the smallest knots to date: A recently uncovered α-haloacid dehalogenase structure contains a knot with six crossings, a so-called Stevedore knot, in a projection onto a plane. Severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs) [Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic syndrome (DRESS), acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), and generalized bullous fixed eruption (GBFE)] are severe drug reactions that often require hospitalization and could be fatal. BRAF and MEK inhibitors (BRAF/MEKi) are a standard of care in patients with BRAF-mutated metastatic melanomas. These agents are administered until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity occurs. A one-pot cascade to protoberberine alkaloids via Stevens rearrangement of nitrile-stabilized ammonium ylides.

A facile one-pot synthesis of protoberberines from readily accessible 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-1-carbonitriles and 1,2-bis(bromomethyl)arenes is described. The reaction cascade comprises four consecutive transformations, all of which can be effected under a single set of conditions. Ten protoberberines, including the alkaloids pseudopalmatine and pseudoepiberberine, were prepared in yields up to 86% according to this strategy. No chromatographic purification of the products is required, and the route is devoid of any protecting group manipulations.

Tutkielman kohteena on Steve Purcellin Sam & Max -sarja, joka on jatkunut 1980-luvulta nykypäivään siirtyen mediavälineestä toiseen, mutta silti alkuperäisen tekijänsä suunnittelemana.
