An electron diffraction study of deposited docosanoic acid monolayers

Docosanoic acid monolayers deposited on thin polymer films under different water surface conditions have been investigated using transmission electron diffraction at normal and tilted incidence. Diffraction patterns obtained from the L2 and L2' phase are quite similar, but distinctly different to samples coated from the CS phase. The former were consistent with molecules perpendicular to the substrate, arranged in a texture of grains with unusual orthorhombic packing. There is evidence for a phase transition from a liquid crystalline phase on the water surface.

Modified YBCO superconductor-ferroelectric composites: Bulk materials and thick films

Bulk samples and 50–125 μm thick films of (1-x)YBa2Cu3O7−δ-xBaTiO3 (0⩽x⩽0.12 by weight) composites have been synthesized, the films being obtained by Stokes sedimentation on SrTiO3 ceramic plates and firing in oxygen by Melt Textured Growth techniques. The phase composition and texture have been studied by X-ray diffraction and microstructure. Resistance and magnetic susceptibility of prepared samples have been measured.

Ferroelastic Fingerprints in Methylammonium Lead Iodide Perovskite

Methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite shows an outstanding performance in photovoltaic devices. However, certain material properties, especially the possible ferroic behavior, remain unclear. We observed distinct nanoscale periodic domains in the piezoresponse of MAPbI3(Cl) grains. The structure and the orientation of these striped domains indicate ferroelasticity as their origin. By correlating vertical and lateral piezoresponse force microscopy experiments performed at different sample orientations with X-ray diffraction, the preferred domain orientation is suggested to be the a1–a2-phase. Microscopic evidence of a flat melting curve of tantalum

International audience; New data on the high-pressure melting curve of Ta up to 48GPa are reported. Evidence of melting from changes in sample texture was found in five different experiments using scanning electron microscopy. The obtained melting temperatures are in excellent agreement with earlier measurements using x-ray diffraction or the laser-speckled method but are in contrast with several theoretical calculations. The results are also compared with shock-wave data. Conservative swept volume boundary approximation

We present a novel technique for approximating the boundary of a swept volume. The generator given by an input triangle mesh is rendered under all rigid transformations of a discrete trajectory. We use a special shader program that creates offset geometry of each triangle on the fly, thus guaranteeing a conservative rasterization and correct depth values. Utilizing rasterization mechanisms and the depth buffer we then get a conservative voxelization of the swept volume (SV) and can extract a triangle mesh from its surface. A conceptual system to produce 3D thermal models of tires for tire inspection and defect characterization is proposed. The system uses registered range and thermal information to build highly detailed 3D models using either a volumetric or mech-based approach. To achieve this goal, two narrow bandpass filters are used in conjunction with two IR cameras to obtain the true temperature of the target body. The thermal information is then translated to texture data and mapped as an overlay onto a 3D model.
