Mesh connectivity compression using convection reconstruction

2007

International audience; During a highly productive period running from 1995 to about 2002, the research in lossless compression of 3D meshes mainly consisted in a hard battle for the best bitrates. But for a few years, compression rates seem stabilized around 1.5 bit per vertex for the connectivity coding of usual meshes, and more and more work is dedicated to remeshing, lossy compression, or gigantic mesh compression, where memory and CPU optimizations are the new priority. However, the size of 3D models keeps growing, and many application fields keep requiring lossless compression. In this paper, we present a new contribution for single-rate lossless connectivity compression, which first …

An ultrathin suspended hydrophobic porous membrane for high-efficiency water desalination

2017

Abstract An ultrathin highly fluorinated porous membrane was designed for a large production of desalted water at very low energy consumption. Imprinting water droplets were used through a low thermally conductive tetra-fluoroethylene (TFE)/2,2,4-trifluoro-5-tri-fluorometoxy-1,3-dioxol (TIT) (HYFLON AD 60) solution and the generated porous nanofilm was suspended onto a polyethersulfone (PES) honeycomb texture. The very tiny fluorinated thickness together with a large number of small-shaped pores provided the membrane for enhanced anti-wetting surface properties, extremely reduced resistance to water vapor transfer and outstanding thermal efficiency. Fine materials structure-transport relati…

An Automated Visual Inspection System for the Classification of the Phases of Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Alloy

2013

Metallography is the science of studying the physical properties of metal microstructures, by means of microscopes. While traditional approaches involve the direct observation of the acquired images by human experts, Com-puter Vision techniques may help experts in the analysis of the inspected mate-rials. In this paper we present an automated system to classify the phases of a Titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V. Our system has been tested to analyze the final products of a Friction Stir Welding process, to study the states of the micro-structures of the welded material.

Phosphorus Loss in Overfertilized Soils: The Selective P Partitioning and Redistribution Between Particle Size Separates

2007

Using 12 well-characterised European soils contrasting in their physical and chemical properties, we demonstrate significant differences in the partitioning of phosphorus (P) between various particle size separates. Samples of each soil were subjected to one of three methods of increasingly aggressive dispersion in the order water (WD), mechanical (MD) or chemical (CD). A general, although not exclusive, inverse relationship existed between the concentration of various attributes (these included organic carbon, oxalate and dithionite iron contents, total P, resin and water extractable P) and particle size. The quantity, composition and physico-chemical properties of individual size separate…

Impact of freezing rate on electrical conductivity of produce

2013

The aim of this work was to compare the effects of freezing rate on electrical conductivity of potatoes, carrots and apples. Electrical conductivity tests were conducted on a custom ohmic cell while samples texture was measured by means of a universal testing machine. The raw un-pretreated samples were used as control. This study showed that freezing pre-treatments lead to differences in electrical conductivity of considered samples, producing structural damage, the latter being relatively more severe when the tested products undergo ohmic treatment.

The use of soil water retention curve models in analyzing slope stability in differently structured soils

2017

Abstract This study analyzes whether and at what rate the parameterization of the Soil Water Retention Curve (SWRC) affects the analysis of shallow slope stability for differently structured unsaturated soils. Advanced empirical or physically-based equations of SWRCs have been proposed in literature to describe soil systems characterized by the so-called bimodal porous domain. In unsaturated soils, SWRC affects the stability assessment in two ways. It influences the resistance properties in terms of shear strengths, which depend on the soil water suction; and it affects the hydrological process modeling (e.g. infiltration) directly influencing soil moisture patterns and indirectly influenci…

Analyses spectrale et texturale de données haute résolution pour la détection automatique des maladies de la vigne

2019

‘Flavescence dorée’ is a contagious and incurable disease present on the vine leaves. The DAMAV project (Automatic detection of Vine Diseases) aims to develop a solution for automated detection of vine diseases using a micro-drone. The goal is to offer a turnkey solution for wine growers. This tool will allow the search for potential foci, and then more generally any type of detectable vine disease on the foliage. To enable this diagnosis, the foliage is proposed to be studied using a dedicated high-resolution multispectral camera. The objective of this PhD-thesis in the context of DAMAV is to participate in the design and implementation of a Multi-Spectral (MS) image acquisition system and …

Symmetry in Computer Vision

2002

Symmetry properties establish the invariance of a system to a given set of transformations. Physicists assign special meaning whenever symmetry is broken in nature; for example, groups of symmetry have been used to explain and predict the spatial organization of atoms in a crystal. Psychologists consider relevant the property of symmetry in the perception of visual signals. The paper will briefly describe different approaches, introduced in computer vision, to measure symmetry. A review of some applications at the Computer Vision Group (Department of Mathematics and Applications of Palermo University) is presented. They regard attentive visual processing, the analysis of faces, the recognit…

Influence of Site and Check Dam Characteristics on Sediment Retention and Structure Conservation in a Mexican River

2020

Previously, in a large river of Mexico regulated by more than 200 check dams, we demonstrated that vegetation cover and channel characteristics were the dominant factors on the structure conditions and capacity to store sediments. This study focuses on other categorical (i.e., check dam type and location, soil texture and land use) and numerical (i.e. water discharge, check dam dimensions) variables, to whom statistical analysis is applied, in order to assess their influence on sediment filling degree and conditions (functional or destroyed) of the check dams in the same river. ANOVA has shown that: (i) check dam type (gabion or stone) and location (headwater, middle or valley reaches), and…

Spatiotemporal dynamics in the oxidation of groups IV?V metals: study of zirconium

1997

Abstract This paper focus on the mechanism of zirconium oxidation at 850 °C by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the interactions between chemical (oxide growth, phase proportion) and physical processes (oxide scale texture, mechanical stresses). The structural gradients in the oxide scale composed of monoclinic ZrO 2 (higher proportion) and tetragonal ZrO 2 were revealed by XRD at variable incidence. The spatial evolution of the monoclinic zirconia texture through the oxide scale was shown and quantified. Relaxation of the oxide compressive stresses was observed for different oxidation times and correlated to kinetic breakaway evidenced by other methods. A structural mechanism of the oxide forma…
