Relation between Tissue Factor Pathway Inhibitor Activity and Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Diseases in a Large Population Sample.

2021

Abstract Objective Tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) is a potent anticoagulant protein in the extrinsic coagulation pathway. In the present study, we aim to identify the cardiovascular determinants for total TFPI activity and its association with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and total mortality. Methods Total TFPI activity was assessed in a selection of the population-based Gutenberg Health Study (n = 5,000). Statistical analysis was performed to identify the determinants for total TFPI activity as well as the associations with CVD and mortality. Results Multivariable linear regression analysis identified smoking (β 0.095 [0.054–0.136]) as a positive determinant for total TFPI activity…

Is the ADA/EASD algorithm for the management of type 2 diabetes (January 2009) based on evidence or opinion? A critical analysis

2010

The ADA and the EASD recently published a consensus statement for the medical management of hyperglycaemia in patients with type 2 diabetes. The authors advocate initial treatment with metformin monotherapy and lifestyle modification, followed by addition of basal insulin or a sulfonylurea if glycaemic goals are not met (tier 1 recommendations). All other glucose-lowering therapies are relegated to a secondary (tier 2) status and only recommended for selected clinical settings. In our view, this algorithm does not offer physicians and patients the appropriate selection of options to individualise and optimise care with a view to sustained control of blood glucose and reduction both of diabe…

Practitioners’ Experiences of Social Media in Career Services

2015

A growing number of career practitioners and career centers are reaching out to individuals and community members in new ways by integrating various social media tools, such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, into their professional practices (e.g., Dyson, 2012; Osborn & LoFrisco, 2012). To many, social media are simply online tools to share information and to communicate and socialize with one another. In the broader sense, social media is defined as a process whereby individuals and groups build a common understanding and meaning with contents, communities, and Web 2.0 technology (e.g., Ahlqvist, Back, Heinonen, & Halonen, 2010; Kangas, Toivonen, & Back, 2007).An extensive body of litera…

Redzes ietekme uz stāju

2017

Līdz ar to, redzes kvalitātes uzlabošana var tieši ietekmēt pacienta …

Gold Redox Catalytic Cycles for the Oxidative Coupling of Alkynes

2011

[EN] Au(I)/Au(III) catalytic cycles are catalytically competent to perform the oxidative coupling of alkynes in the homogeneous phase at room temperature and without any protecting atmosphere. Selectfluor as oxidant, wet acetonitrile as solvent, and sodium carbonate as base are the reagents of choice. Both aromatic and alkyl alkynes can be coupled, and mechanistic studies reveal that at least two gold species having different oxidation states are implicated in the key step of the coupling.

Formation and significance of black pebbles from the ota limestone (Upper Jurassic, Portugal)

1987

Black pebbles are a characteristic facies element of the Upper Jurassic Ota carbonate bank (Portugal). They occur both scattered or concentrated in two horizons, the upper of which is very widespread and may serve as a lithostratigraphic correlation level.

Electrochemical monitoring of the oxidative coupling of alkynes catalyzed by triphenylphosphine gold complexes

2012

Electrochemical monitoring of the oxidative coupling of alkynes in the homogeneous phase through catalytic cycles involving triphenylphosphine gold complexes and selectfluor as oxidant reveals that at least two gold species in +3 and +1 oxidation states are implicated. Electrochemically driven homocoupling of terminal alkynes using molecular oxygen as the oxidant can be performed using such catalysts. Keywords: Gold catalysis, Oxidative coupling of alkynes, Oxygen, Voltammetry

Long-term decrease in Asian monsoon rainfall and abrupt climate change events over the past 6,700 years

2021

Significance The variability of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) is important for the functioning of ecological and societal systems at regional to continental scales, but the long-term evolution and interannual variability of this system is not well understood. Here, we present a stable isotope–based reconstruction of ASM variability covering 4680 BCE to 2011 CE. Superimposed on a gradual drying trend, a rapid drop in mean annual precipitation (>40%) toward persistently drier conditions occurred in ∼1675 BCE. This megadrought caused regional forest deterioration and enhanced aeolian activity affecting Chinese ecosystems. We argue that this abrupt aridification starting ∼2000 BCE triggered wa…

Metformin Use and Cognitive Function in Older Adults With Type 2 Diabetes Following a Mediterranean Diet Intervention

2021

Background and Purpose: Both adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and the use of metformin could benefit the cognitive performance of individuals with type 2 diabetes, but evidence is still controversial. We examined the association between metformin use and cognition in older adults with type 2 diabetes following a MedDiet intervention. Methods: Prospective cohort study framed in the PREDIMED-Plus-Cognition sub-study. The PREDIMED-Plus clinical trial aims to compare the cardiovascular effect of two MedDiet interventions, with and without energy restriction, in individuals with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome. The present sub-study included 487 cognitively normal subjects…

Critical Assessment of European Agenda for the Collaborative Economy, on behalf of European Parliament. In-Depth Analysis for the IMCO Committee

2017

The research paper describes the main legal challenges for regulating the collaborative economy and evaluates the definition of, and elucidates how the existing body of EU law applies to collaborative economy business models. In the last part, the paper elaborates on how a regulatory framework for non- professional provision of services and prosumers should look like and makes a few concrete proposals for future policies. This paper was commissioned by the Policy Department A for Economic, Scientific and Quality of Life Policies upon request of the European Parliament ́s Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection.
