Effect of Motor-Cognitive (Dual Task) Rehabilitation Program on Gait Biomechanics in Parkinson’s Disease: Case Study

2016

In some pathologies with impaired control gait, the dual task execution even worse these gait alterations, as in Parkinson’s Disease (PD) occurs. The aim of this paper is to present the effects of a rehabilitation program that integrates dual tasks in gait rehabilitation and prepare patients to move functionally in complex environments in a person with PD. 3D photogrammetry system and two force platform were used for the registering of kinematic and kinetic parameters, respectively. The main variables that have improved after the proposed program are: speed gait (54.87 %), step length (52.01 %), stride length (43.48 %), double support time (37.36 %), flexo-extension hip range of motion (36.…

The Effect of Simulated Leg-Length Discrepancy on the Dynamic Parameters of the Feet during Gait—Cross-Sectional Research

2021

Background: The effect of Leg-Length Discrepancy (LLD) on dynamic gait parameters has been extensively discussed. Podobarography is the study of foot-to-ground pressure distribution. It has been used to test plantar footprint deviations that could reveal pathology. Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the effects of simulated LLD on dynamic gait parameters measured with a pressure platform in healthy subjects. Methods: Thirty-seven healthy subjects participated in observational cross-sectional research. A procedure was performed to capture the dynamic parameters of each participant under five different simulated LLD conditions. Support time, mean pressure, and peak pressure measur…

The INMA INfancia y Medio Ambiente-(Environment and Childhood) project: More than 10 years contributing to environmental and neuropsychological resea…

2017

Background: In 2003 the INMA—INfancia y Medio Ambiente (Environment and Childhood) project, a Spanish national network of birth cohorts including more than 3500 participants, was set up with the aim to assess the health impacts of pre- and postnatal environmental exposures on children. The project has published more than 60 papers on maternal and environmental factors related to neuropsychological development in children, one of the main research interests within the project. With the present review, we evaluate the evidence provided by the INMA project on this topic and discuss how the data can contribute to cover the challenges that children’s environmental health research will face in th…

Experiences of a poison center with metformin-associated lactic acidosis.

2004

Metformin is widely used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, though it is recognized to be associated with the risk of lactic acidosis. A case of pronounced lactic acidosis with cardiac arrest (pH 6.60, lactate 17.5 mmol/l, base excess - 30, standard bicarbonate 2.5 mmol/l, core body temperature 27.8 degrees C) is presented in a 61-year-old woman under metformin therapy. The key laboratory abnormalities observed during the intensive care treatment including repeated hemodialysis are described. The patient showed a complete recovery with residually reduced mental capabilities. Furthermore, an explorative data analysis of our poison center database from 1995 until 2003 concerning metformin w…

CAD Modeling for Evaluating LVOT Obstruction in Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement

2019

The current generation of transcatheter heart valves (THV), as the Edwards SAPIEN 3 Ultra (S3), is not specifically designed for mitral position implantation and has intrinsic design geometry that may make mitral implantation suboptimal. This study aimed to develop a computed-tomography (CT) based CAD workflow for the preoperative planning of transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) by evaluating the resulting obstruction in the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT). Specifically, the computational framework to reconstruct heart anatomy and virtually deploy the THV into mitral valve annulus was developed and successively applied to the cases of two patients who experienced annuloplasty…

Pitfalls in whole body MRI with diffusion weighted imaging performed on patients with lymphoma: What radiologists should know

2016

The technological advances in radiological imaging and the relevance of a diagnostic tool that may reduce radiation-induced long-term effects have led to a widespread use of whole body magnetic resonance imaging (WB-MRI) with diffusion weighted imaging for oncologic patients. A lot of studies demonstrated the feasibility and reliability of WB-MRI as an alternative technique for lymphoma staging and response assessment during and after treatment. In this paper, taking advantage of our 2years of experience using WB-MRI for lymphoma, we discuss the main pitfalls and artifacts radiologists should know examining a WB-MRI performed on this typology of patients in order to avoid images misinterpre…

Relationships Between Standing Balance and Symmetry Measurements in Patients Following Recent Strokes (≤3 Weeks) or Older Strokes (≥6 Months)

2004

Abstract Background and Purpose. The Functional Standing Balance (FSB) Scale was designed to obtain measurements of standing balance and to identify the problems typically faced by people with stroke. The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity of measurements obtained with the FSB Scale for use in the acute and chronic phases of stroke by comparing the measurements obtained with the FSB Scale with those obtained for postural sway and lateral symmetry by use of a force platform. Subjects and Methods. Measurements were obtained for 26 people with recent strokes (ie, strokes within 3 weeks of data collection) and for 28 people with long-standing strokes (ie, strokes of 6 months'…

Release of non-neuronal acetylcholine from the isolated human placenta is affected by antidepressants.

2007

Non-neuronal acetylcholine (ACh) is released from the human placenta into the extracellular space via organic cation transporters (OCTs). The present experiments investigated whether ACh release from epithelial cells is affected by drugs which are substrates of OCTs. The antidepressant drugs amitriptyline and doxepine were tested as both substances are not approved for pregnant women but frequently used. Release of ACh was measured in 10 min intervals over a period of 100 min. Test substances were added from t=50 min of incubation onwards. The effect was calculated by comparing the ACh release of the last three samples (t=70-100 min; B2) with that immediately before the application of the t…
