Fossil wood in Middle–Upper Jurassic marine sedimentary cycles of France: relations with climate, sea-level dynamics, and carbonate-platform environm…

1998

Abstract Vegetation, climate, and sea-level oscillations interact in complex ways. Intuition suggests that climatic variations are recorded in geological deposits by both fossil phytoclasts and sediments. Therefore investigation of palaeobotanical remains within a precise sedimentological framework may help to decipher this much-debated interaction. A database of 129 Jurassic (Bathonian–Oxfordian) fossil wood samples from France is used here as a case study. The palaeoenvironment (freshwater swamp, carbonate lagoon, shoreface, argillaceous offshore) and the second-order relative sea-level phases were determined for each datum. There is no correlation between the wood genera distribution and…

One My scale subsidence of carbonate sedimentary bodies and the viscosity of the lower crust

2004

Abstract The possibility of flow of the lower crust under the load produced by carbonate sedimentary accumulations is investigated through the example of the Paris basin during the Middle Jurassic (i.e. Bathonian). Depositional geometries, water depths and sedimentary environments have been estimated and correlated for 164 sites spread over a surface of 380 per 220 km for three successive periods lasting each less than 0.8 My. A signal of relative vertical displacement has been extracted from water-depth and sedimentary thickness. Data have then been interpolated to produce maps of velocity of vertical displacement, sedimentation rate, water depth, and water-depth variation between two peri…

Synergistic Effect of Carfilzomib and Metformin in Vascular Plasticity; The Emerging Role of Autophagy

2019

Introduction: Carfilzomib (Cfz) correlates with a risk of reversible cardiotoxicity in 5-10% of multiple myeloma (MM) patients. We have recently shown that metformin (Met) has a prophylactic role against the Cfz-induced cardiotoxicity in vivo, through activation of AMPKα signaling (Blood 2019;133:710-23). However, the impact of Cfz on vascular function is obscure. Therefore, we sought to investigate: i) the acute, ii) the sub-chronic effect of Cfz on the vascular reactivity, iii) the effect of metformin co-administration on the vascular phenotype and iv) the impact of Cfz and Met co-administration on aged Human Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells (HAoSMCs). Methods: Forty male C57Bl/6 mice were assi…

Liraglutide improves metabolic parameters and carotid intima-media thickness in diabetic patients with the metabolic syndrome: an 18-month prospectiv…

2016

Abstract Background Liraglutide, a GLP-1 analogue, exerts several beneficial non-glycemic effects in patients with type-2 diabetes (T2DM), such as those on body weight, blood pressure, plasma lipids and inflammation markers. However, the effects of liraglutide on cardiovascular (CV) risk markers in subjects with the metabolic syndrome (MetS) are still largely unknown. We herein explored its effects on various cardio-metabolic risk markers of the MetS in subjects with T2DM. Methods We performed an 18-month prospective, real-world study. All subjects had T2DM and the MetS based on the AHA/NHLBI criteria. Subjects with a history of a major CV event were excluded. One hundred-twenty-one subject…

Mitochondrial biogenesis in exercise and in ageing☆

2009

Mitochondrial biogenesis is critical for the normal function of cells. It is well known that mitochondria are produced and eventually after normal functioning they are degraded. Thus, the actual level of mitochondria in cells is dependent both on the synthesis and the degradation. Ever since the proposal of the mitochondrial theory of ageing by Jaime Miquel in the 70's, it was appreciated that mitochondria, which are both a target and a source of radicals in cells, are most important organelles to understand ageing. Thus, a common feature between cell physiology of ageing and exercise is that in both situations mitochondria are critical for normal cell functioning. Mitochondrial synthesis i…

Urban water quality modelling: a parsimonious holistic approach for a complex real case study

2010

In the past three decades, scientific research has focused on the preservation of water resources, and in particular, on the polluting impact of urban areas on natural water bodies. One approach to this research has involved the development of tools to describe the phenomena that take place on the urban catchment during both wet and dry periods. Research has demonstrated the importance of the integrated analysis of all the transformation phases that characterise the delivery and treatment of urban water pollutants from source to outfall. With this aim, numerous integrated urban drainage models have been developed to analyse the fate of pollution from urban catchments to the final receiving …

Yeast β-glucans and microalgal extracts modulate the immune response and gut microbiome in Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis)

2019

One bottleneck to sustainability of fish aquaculture is the control of infectious diseases. Current trends include the preventive application of immunostimulants and prebiotics such as polysaccharides. The present study investigated how yeast β-glucan (Y), microalgal polysaccharide-enriched extracts (MAe) and whole Phaeodactylum tricornutum cells (MA) modulated the gut microbiome and stimulated the immune system in Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) when administered by oral intubation. Blood, intestine and spleen samples were taken at 3 h, 24 h, 48 h and 7 days after treatment. The short-term response (within 48 h after treatment) consisted of up-regulation of il1b and irf7 expression in…
