Knowledge, attitudes and practices of primary healthcare professionals to female genital mutilation in Valencia, Spain: are we ready for this challen…
2017
Background The practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a deeply-rooted tradition in 30 Sub-Saharan and Middle-East countries which affects approximately 200 million women and girls worldwide. The practice leads to devastating consequences on the health and quality of life of women and girls in both the short and long term. Globalizing processes and migration flows have recorded cases of this practice worldwide representing for healthcare professionals an emerging challenge on how to approach their healthcare in a transcultural, ethical and respectful way. No survey to assess knowledge, attitudes and practices on FGM among primary healthcare professionals has been conducted in the Val…
Measuring change in health care equity using small area administrative data – evidence from the English NHS 2001-8
2011
This study developed a method for measuring change in socio-economic equity in health care utilisation using small area level administrative data. Our method provides more detailed information on utilisation than survey data but only examines socio-economic differences between neighbourhoods rather than individuals. The context was the English NHS from 2001 to 2008, a period of accelerated expenditure growth and pro-competition reform. Hospital records for all adults receiving non-emergency hospital care in the English NHS from 2001 to 2008 were aggregated to 32,482 English small areas with mean population about 1,500 and combined with other small area administrative data. Regression models…
Health-Related Quality of Life in Old Age: How to Define it, How to Study?
1995
Quality of life, in the words of Alvan R. Feinstein is something like intelligence. “Everyone knows it exists and thinks they can identify it in various ways, but we may not be able to evoke universal agreement on what it is” (Feinstein, 1987, p. 639). This is also true of quality of life when we consider it from a health point of view. The concept itself seems to be perfectly useful, but at the same time there is something very confusing and even irritating about it. What are we talking about when we talk about health-related quality of life? Do we really need this concept if we think of all the countless number of terms and concepts that refer to different dimensions of health-related phe…

Disability, Health-Related Quality of Life and Mortality in Lumbar Spine Fusion Patients—A 5-Year Follow-Up and Comparison With a Population Sample
2020
Study Design: Prospective follow-up study. Objectives: We aimed to assess the effect of lumbar spine fusion (LSF) on disability, health-related quality of life and mortality in a 5-year follow-up, and to compare these results with the general population. Methods: 523 consecutive LSF operations were included in a prospective follow-up. Disability was assessed by the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and HRQoL by the 36-item Short Form (SF-36) questionnaire using the physical and mental summary scores (PCS and MCS). The patients were compared with an age-, sex-, and residential area matched general population cohort. Results: The preoperative ODI in the patients was 46 (SD 16), and the change …
Strengthening Child-centred Health Systems response: what happens with migrant children?
2020
Abstract Migrant children are especially vulnerable to the challenges experienced during the migratory process and its integration in the host country, even more, if they are unaccompanied. Child-centred Health Systems responses are needed, for that reason, the Erasmsus+ project EUVETCARE aims to strengthen the capacity of the professionals and systems to meet the specific needs of this population. A qualitative study allowed a needs assessment of the health and social care professionals in 5 EU countries (Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Italy and Spain). A total of 15 focus groups were carried out (99 participants). Focus groups discussions were transcribed verbatim in local languages and transcr…

Sensitive Screening of New Psychoactive Substances in Serum Using Liquid Chromatography-Quadrupole Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry.
2021
Abstract Analysis of new psychoactive substances (NPS) still poses a challenge for many institutions due to the number of available substances and the constantly changing drug market. Both new and well-known substances keep appearing and disappearing on the market, making it hard to adapt analytical methods in a timely manner. In this study we developed a qualitative screening approach for serum samples by means of liquid chromatography--quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Samples were measured in data-dependent auto tandem mass spectrometry mode and identified by fragment spectra comparison, retention time and accurate mass. Approximately 500 NPS, including 195 synthetic cannabino…
From Healthcare Manager's Competencies to Helthcare Organization's Competences
2017
Competency identification systems need to identify both – personal (mostly managerial/leadership) competencies and organizational competences. This article is focused on identification the common competencies of healthcare managers significantly shaping core competences of such organizations. There are many models of healthcare managerial competencies – three of them are presented in this article. First is Competency Task Force (The Healthcare Leadership Alliance approach), second – Competency Directory Model (The Global Consortium for Healthcare Management Professionalization approach) and third - NCHL Competency Model (created by The National Center for Healthcare Leadership). In author’s…
DIETA GLUTEN-FREE (DGF) IN SOGGETTI CELIACI E QUALITA' DELLA VITA
2015
