Lipedema: an overview of its clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of the disproportional fatty deposition syndrome - systematic review
2012
Lipedema is a disproportionate, symmetrical fatty swelling characterized by pain and bruising existing almost exclusively among women. We undertook a systematic review of the available literature about lipedema, given the lack of knowledge and little evidence about this disorder especially among obesity experts. Diagnosis of lipedema is usually based on clinical features. Symmetrical edema in the lower limbs with fatty deposits located to hips and thighs usually appears at puberty and often affects several members of the same family. Main disorders considered for differential diagnosis are lymphedema, obesity, lipohypertrophy and phlebedema. Treatment protocols comprise conservative (decong…
THU0715-HPR Stratified exercise therapy by physical therapists in primary care is feasible in patients with knee osteoarthritis
2018
Background There is strong evidence that exercise therapy is effective in reducing pain and activity limitations in knee osteoarthritis (OA), but effect sizes are low to moderate. Stratified exercise therapy tailored to clinically relevant subgroups of patients is expected to optimise treatment effects in a cost-effective manner. Objectives This study aimed to explore the feasibility of a newly developed model of stratified exercise therapy in primary care. Methods A mixed method design was used, consisting of an uncontrolled pretest-posttest design and a process evaluation. Eligible patients visiting a participating primary care physical therapist (PT) were included. Based on our model, pa…
Respiratory snorkel and valve system for breath-by-breath gas analysis in swimming
2003
The present study aimed to compare a standard facemask (CM) and a newly modified swimming snorkel and valve system (SV) for breath-by-breath (BxB) gas analysis (K4 b2, Cosmed, Rome, Italy), and to validate the system under controlled laboratory conditions before being used in swimming. Nine healthy males performed two bouts of a stepwise exercise on an electrically braked stationary bicycle on separate days. Ventilatory and gas exchange parameters were analyzed using the same BxB portable system, with subjects breathing alternatively through the two different valves. Agreement between both methods was evaluated by Passing-Bablok regression analysis. The gas exchange values measured using th…

Osteosarcoma of the Trapezium
2021
Osteogenic sarcoma is a malignant tumor that rarely affects the hand. When it does, it most often involves the phalanges or metacarpal heads. We present the case of a 51-year-old woman with a low-grade osteosarcoma affecting the trapezium bone of her left hand. A total trapeziectomy with partial removal of the first metatarsal, scaphoid, trapezoid, and capitate bones was performed, and no adjuvant therapy was administered. Six years after the intervention, the patient is disease-free, with excellent functionality and yearly imaging tests showing no signs of recurrence.

Potential options to optimize therapy of gastroesophageal reflux disease with proton pump inhibitors.
2007
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are antisecretory agents that are widely used in the short- and long-term management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) to relieve symptoms, heal esophagitis, and prevent complications, such as strictures and Barrett’s esophagus. The total healthcare costs of GERD are high, especially for maintenance treatment. Therefore, the choice of cost-effective therapeutic options is an ineluctable challenge for public health authorities, third-party payers, and patients. In some European Union countries, a recent trend of public health authorities is to promote the choice of less expensive PPIs, regardless of their antisecretory potency – this in spite of the evid…
Consensus document on community-acquired pneumonia in children. SENP-SEPAR-SEIP
2020
Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a prevalent disease among children and is frequently associated with both diagnostic and therapeutic uncertainties. Consensus has been reached between SEPAR, SENP and SEIP, and their conclusions are as follows.
Construction of the client in physiotherapy student's practical learning sessions: a discourse analytic study
2008
In recent years, there has been a tendency to stress the active role and equal partnership of clients in social and healthcare. Moreover, research in the role of clients has attracted growing interest. Clinical education has been seen as an excellent arena for learning the distinctiveness of the interaction between the client and the professional physiotherapist by giving students the chance to participate in actual healthcare encounters. This study focuses on examining the construction of various client roles through interactions between participants in practical learning sessions that physiotherapy students took part in. These sessions were real professional physiotherapy encounters. Qual…
