Oral myiasis in mentally challenged patient: a case report

Myiasis is the infestation of live human and vertebrate animal with Dipterous larvae which feed on host’s dead or living tissue. This condition is a result of neglected approach towards oral hygiene along with mental and physical challenges of patient. A case of oral myiasis in the maxillary anterior region in an 18 years old female with neurologic defi-cit caused by the larvae (maggots) is reported. The management consists of manual removal of larvae by topical application of turpentine oil, oral therapy with Ivermectin and surgical debridement of oral wound.

Muscle strength before and mortality after a bone fracture in older people

We studied whether muscle strength measured before a bone fracture predicts mortality following the fracture. The participants were a sub-cohort of 82 people of a total of 493 Evergreen project participants initially aged 75- and 80 years, who had participated in knee extension strength tests as part of the baseline examinations, and who subsequently suffered at least one bone fracture. Maximal isometric knee extension strength was measured at baseline using an adjustable dynamometer chair. The postural sway of subjects during standing both with their eyes open and closed together with maximum velocity of walking were analysed in six male chronic hemiplegic patients before, during and after an intensive movement training programme lasting 8 weeks. The movement training programme was carried out on the basis of Bobath's principles. Three of the subjects carried out their training on a trampoline, with the particular purpose of enhancing the stimulation of the mechanisms responsible for the control of balance. Although enzyme replacement therapy has had a considerable impact on the management of patients with Fabry disease, it is essential that attention is also given to supportive therapy. In this chapter a general overview about ancillary therapy is given. The great variability of clinical symptoms faced by patients with Fabry disease need the involvement from many different specialists, as well as a wide range of concomitant treatments. Coordinating a good multidisciplinary approach for each patient and ensuring that treatment is made as convenient as possible may offer a more positive impact on the quality of life of those patients affected by Fabry disease.

Neuromuscular fatigue has traditionally been examined using isolated forms of either isometric, concentric or eccentric actions. However, none of these actions are naturally occurring in human (or animal) ground locomotion. More than half of all acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) patients are over 60 years. The disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) rate of these patients is poor. These unsatisfactory results are associated with adverse cytogenetic characteristics, prior myelods-plasia, adverse phenotypic features, MDR and BCL2 overexpression.
