Mental Health in Athletes: Where Are the Treatment Studies?

2022

In recent years, athletes’ mental health has gained interest among researchers, sport practitioners, and the media. However, the field of sport psychology lacks empirical evidence on the effectiveness of psychotherapeutic interventions for mental health problems and disorders in athletes. Thus far, intervention research in sport psychology has mainly focused on performance enhancement using between-subject designs and healthy athlete samples. In the current paper, we highlight three interrelated key issues in relation to treating mental health problems and disorders in athletes. (i) How are mental health and mental health problems and disorders defined in the sport psychology literature? (i…

Facing the music : a critical enquiry into 'the dodo-bird verdict' to develop music psychotherapy theory

2015

‘The dodo-bird verdict’ represents a boggling outcome of research that shows no significant difference between the outcomes of a variety of psychotherapy treatments. Not being able to scientifically discriminate between psychotherapeutic treatments, casts doubt on their theoretical underpinnings, and even on their efficacy. This in turn presents professionals who use psychotherapeutic techniques - including music therapists - with a conundrum: What can explain this inability? And what can be done to solve the problem? Conceptual research methods were used to analyse literature in order to answer these questions. Various weaknesses were identified, both in theory construction and in research…

Psykoterapeutin henkilökohtaisten ominaisuuksien merkitys psykoterapiassa ja niiden vaikutus tuloksellisuuteen identiteettihaastattelun perusteella

2018

The purpose of my study was to use the Psychotherapist Identity Interview (PII) method, developed for this study and based on Erik H. Erikson's and Heinz Kohut's theories, to examine the significance of the personal characteristics of psychotherapists for psychotherapy, and their effect on treatment results. The study described the theoretical background and development of the interview method and the validation of the instrument. The study involved 68 contract therapists from the Helsinki Psychotherapy Study and 333 patients, of whom 65 therapists and 308 patients were included in the as-sessment of benefit from therapy. Videotaped, semistructured therapist interviews were assessed using 1…

Subjectivity in a therapeutic process as a predictor of psychotherapeutic success

2014

Reflections on the uniquely human dimensions of behavior over the last few decades have become a meeting space connecting different sciences. The holistic health model emphasizes the subjectivity of man. Humans are open and active, and remain in relationships with others; they relate to the world they live in and seek meaning. Subjectivity in the psychological perspective can be described in three ways: subjectivity as identity, individuality, specific experience of self; subjectivity as the ability to initiate, regulate, direct, and realize goal-oriented and autonomous activity; subjectivity as the application of one’s own system of values. Subjectivity or causality (core features agency) …

Mafia e psicoterapia

2012

2016

The paper introduces the mechanism of neuroplasticity, specifically the ability of the brain to develop new neurons (neurogenesis) and new connections between nerve cells (synaptogenesis) and to develop glial cells. The author presents the evidence proving the existence of neuroplasticity by giving examples of people with serious brain damage who function normally and, above all, of people living with almost no brain or with one hemisphere, or with post-stroke defects. However, the main purpose of this paper is to present the current state of knowledge of the importance of the brain plasticity for the course of psychotherapy, as well as for assessing its effectiveness. The author gives many…

Challenges and added value of measuring embodied variables in psychotherapy

2022

Research on embodied aspects of clinical encounters is growing, but discussion on the premises of including embodied variables in empirical research is scarce. Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that embodied aspects of psychotherapy interaction are vital in developing a therapeutic alliance, and these should be considered to better understand the change process in psychotherapy. However, the field is still debating which methods should be used and which features of the embodied aspects are relevant in the clinical context. The field lacks methodological consistency as well as a theoretical model. In the Relational Mind research project, we have studied the embodied aspects of interaction…

Typy i metody psychoterapii osób z zaburzeniami osobowości

2020

The Psychiatrist's Role in Implementing Open Dialogue Model of Care

2019

The Open Dialogue approach is a family‐oriented early intervention model for mental health problems developed in the health district of Western Lapland, Finland. Since the 1990s the psychiatric service system in Western Lapland Health Care District has been organised according to Open Dialogue principles and applied to the treatment of any mental health concerns. The Open Dialogue approach considers the client and their family as active participants rather than as objects of treatment in its planning and implementation with a psychotherapeutic focus. In daily work, the responsibility for the treatment process is shared with the case‐specific team. The model of care requires a dialogical ori…

Effects of training on bone metabolism in young athletes

2021

Purpose. This study investigated the effects of two types of training on the bone formation marker of osteocalcin and the bone resorption marker of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase isoenzyme 5b (TRAP5b) in young track and field boys and girls. Methods. The 14-year-old group (10 boys, 10 girls) performed first time an intensive and supervised 8-week plyometric training. In the 17-year-old group (13 athletic boys, 6 control boys, 12 athletic girls, 6 control girls), the normal many-sided track and field training lasted 6 months. Results. Significant increases were noticed in osteocalcin (p < 0.01) both in younger boys and girls. The 20-m sprint performance improved in girls (p < 0.01) and …
