Nanoscale Heat Engine Beyond the Carnot Limit

2013

We consider a quantum Otto cycle for a time-dependent harmonic oscillator coupled to a squeezed thermal reservoir. We show that the efficiency at maximum power increases with the degree of squeezing, surpassing the standard Carnot limit and approaching unity exponentially for large squeezing parameters. We further propose an experimental scheme to implement such a model system by using a single trapped ion in a linear Paul trap with special geometry. Our analytical investigations are supported by Monte Carlo simulations that demonstrate the feasibility of our proposal. For realistic trap parameters, an increase of the efficiency at maximum power of up to a factor of 4 is reached, largely ex…

Vortex replication in Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in double-well potentials

2009

In this work we demonstrate, by means of numerical simulations, the possibility of replicating matter-wave vortices in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a double-well potential. The most remarkable result is the generation of replicas of an initial vortex state located in one side of the double potential, which evolves into two copies, each one located in one of the potential minima. A simple linear theory gives the basic explanation of the phenomenon and predicts experimental realistic conditions for observation. A complementary strategy of easy experimental implementation to dramatically decrease the replication time is presented and numerically tested for the general case of nonlinea…

Comment on “Accurate ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half filling”

2004

In PRB 68, 153101 (2003), Guoping Zhang presented density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) results which contradict my DMRG calculations and Hirsch's quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations for the charge-density-wave (CDW) phase boundary in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half filling. In this Comment I show that Zhang's results are inaccurate and that his criticism of my work is groundless.

Refrigeration bound of heat-producing cylinders by superfluid helium

2019

In this paper we go ahead in our studies on refrigeration of nanosystems by superfluid helium, as an appealing subject for future applications to computers or astronautical precision nanodevices. We first recall the effective thermal conductivity in laminar counterflow superfluid helium through arrays of mutually parallel cylinders and we discuss the conditions for the appearance of quantum turbulence around the heat-producing cylinders. We then consider the cooling of an array of heat-producing cylindrical nanosystems by means of superfluid-helium counterflow. We discuss the upper bound on heat removal set by avoidance of quantum turbulence and avoidance of phase transition to normal He I,…

Small Clusters Made of Helium Atoms

2003

Helium atoms interact very weakly through a van der Waals potential. Nevertheless, they are able to form aggregates or drops with a small number of atoms. This work analyzes the stability of clusters made of 4He atoms, of bosonic nature, clusters made of 3He atoms, of fermionic nature and also mixed aggregates with both kinds of constituents. Some of these drops are predicted to be unstable.

Enthalpy of Solution of Nonionic Solutes in Organized Systems

1989

The standard enthalpies of solution of alcohols in micellar solutions of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide were obtained by direct measurements and by enthalpies of mixing. The observed trends were analyzed with a previously reported model. From the resulting equations, the distribution constant, standard enthalpy of transfer from aqueous to the micellar phase and the standard enthalpy of solution in micellar phase can be calculated at the same time using a linear least-squares analysis. The model seems to hold well also in the case of short chain surfactants and microheterogeneities in spite of the fact that the micellization equilibrium is treated as a pseudo-phase transition.

Simulation of Transport in Partially Miscible Binary Fluids: Combination of Semigrandcanonical Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics Methods

2004

Binary Fluids that exhibit a miscibility gap are ubiquitous in nature (glass melts, polymer solutions and blends, mixtures of molten metals, etc.) and exhibit a delicate interplay between static and dynamic properties. This is exemplified for a simple model system, the symmetrical AB Lennard-Jones mixture. It is shown how semigrandcanonical Monte Carlo methods, that include A→B (B→A) identity switches as Monte Carlo moves, can yield the phase diagram, the interfacial tension between coexisting phases, and various pair correlation functions and structure factors. In addition to the build-up of long-ranged concentration correlations near the critical point, unmixing is also accompanied by the…

Mobility, interdiffusion, and tracer diffusion in lattice-gas models of two-component alloys

1989

The transport properties of lattice-gas models of alloys with two particle species are studied. The numbers of the particles and vacancies are conserved, and the two particle species have different exchange rates with the vacancies. The mobility and interdiffusion is described by the linear Onsager theory of transport. The Onsager coefficients are estimated from numerical simulations of the mobilities. A recently proposed relation between the Onsager coefficients of the random-alloy model is verified. The interdiffusion of the two species is directly monitored in the simulations; it is well described by the estimated Onsager coefficients. The results on interdiffusion are compared with simu…

Temperature-dependent phase transitions in water-oil-surfactant mixtures: Experiment and theory

1996

We investigate temperature induced phase transitions in mixtures of water, oil, and a nonionic surfactant. By microcalorimetric measurements it is shown that the droplet-lamellar transition shows hysteresis so that it is strongly first order. The position of this transition and of the emulsification boundary are quantitatively described by an interfacial model which considers solely the temperature dependence of the spontaneous curvature. There is no fit parameter in the model. Remarkably, the positions of both boundaries do not depend on the bending moduli. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
