Experimental results on adsorption beds for air dehumidification
2016
Desiccant rotors are commonly used in large scale solar cooling open cycle applications. As is well known, adsorption heat sensibly reduces the dehumidification capacity of the desiccant material and results in lower system performance. The aim of this work is to describe an innovative solution that permits simultaneous mass and heat transfer. In particular, two components working with silica gel fixed beds were studied and compared. The first component is a simple packed bed containing silica gel grains. The second component is a fin and tube heat exchanger commonly used in several air conditioning applications wherein the spaces between the fins are filled with silica gel grains. In this …
Monitoring Results and Energy Performances Evaluation of Freescoo Solar DEC Systems
2016
Abstract This work addresses the energy saving performances of some solar Desiccant and Evaporative Cooling (DEC) systems working with the freescoo technology. The innovative freescoo concept is based on the use two fixed and cooled adsorption beds and advanced indirect evaporative cooling processes. The main feature of this new adsorption bed concept is to allow the simultaneous dehumidification and cooling of air. The systems analyzed have been installed in Italy last here and results based on field monitoring data are here presented. A description of the monitored systems and comparisons between the energy performances based on the main performance indicators such as EER, thermal COP, co…
Update on desiccant wheel model
2004
This short communication presents the update on the desiccant wheel models, developed earlier by the present authors. It is to be mentioned here that the psycrometric model presented earlier (Int. J. Energy Res., 2003; 27:17) is valid only for the desiccant wheel running with identical volume air-flows in supply and regeneration sides. However, when system runs with volume air flow ratio between supply and regeneration side (α), different from 1 (one), the model need further modifications. In the present work, correction factors were developed and incorporated in order to update the earlier model for predicting correctly the temperature and humidity of processed air at the outlet of desicca…
Rapid evaluation of ammonium in different rain events minimizing needed volume by a cost-effective and sustainable PDMS supported solid sensor.
2020
Abstract The presence of ammonium ion in rainwater is due to atmospheric processes which involve its scavenging from gas phase and particulate matter. The fractionated samplings of rainwater can provide information about these processes and their potential sources. However, only a low sample volume may be available, which constrained the analysis in general and more particularly in situ mode. For minimizing this limitation, this work proposes a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-salicylate sensor that produces a color change. The embedding of solid reagents into PDMS was optimized. Good analytical characteristics (analysis time of 10 min, sample volume of 500 μL, limit of detection 0.03 μgmL−1) we…
Sequential injection spectrophotometric determination of oxybenzone in lipsticks
2001
A sequential injection (SI) procedure for the spectrophotometric determination of oxybenzone in lipsticks is reported. The colorimetric reaction between nickel and oxybenzone was used. SI parameters such as sample solution volume, reagent solution volume, propulsion flow rate and reaction coil length were studied. The limit of detection was 3 microg ml(-1). The sensitivity was 0.0108+/-0.0002 ml microg(-1). The relative standard deviations of the results were between 6 and 12%. The real concentrations of samples and the values obtained by HPLC were comparable. Microwave sample pre-treatment allowed the extraction of oxybenzone with ethanol, thus avoiding the use of toxic organic solvents. E…
Optimization of sample preparation conditions for detecting trace amounts of β-tegafur in α- and β-tegafur mixture.
2012
We report a semiquantitative method for determining trace amounts (<1%) of thermodynamically stable forms in polymorphic mixtures, focusing on sample preparation ef- fects on solid phase transitions. Tegafur (5-fluoro-1-(oxolan-2-yl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine- 2,4-dione) was used as a model material in this study. The amounts of the thermodynamically stable $ tegafur were increased to levels detectable by powder X-ray diffractometry by grind- ing the samples in a ball mill in the presence of water. The limit of detection for this method was as low as 0.0005% of $ tegafur in " and $ tegafur mixtures. The amount of $ tegafur after sample preparation was found to be proportional to the init…
Environmentally friendly analytical chemistry through automation: comparative study of strategies for carbaryl determination with p-aminophenol
1999
Abstract A flow system, based on multicommutation and binary sampling, has been developed for improving the automated spectrophotometric determination of carbaryl with p -aminophenol (PAP) in order to reduce the waste volume and to preserve the maximum analytical performance. The procedure, which was implemented employing a flow network obtained by nesting five, three-way solenoid valves controlled by means of a 386 microcomputer equipped with an electronic interface running software written in quick basic 4.5, provides a limit of detection of 26 μg l −1 , comparable to that obtained using a conventional flow injection (FIA) manifold and lower than that found by sequential injection analysi…
Quantification of low levels of amorphous content in sucrose by hyperDSC.
2005
A method was developed for the quantification of low levels of amorphous content in sucrose with hyperDSC. The method was based on the fact that the change of specific heat at the glass transition is linearly proportional to the amorphous content. It was found out that as annealing time increased, the glass transition temperature moved to a higher temperature and the change of specific heat increased. DeltaC(p) for annealed totally amorphous sucrose was 0.761+/-0.012 Jg(-1) degrees C(-1). Synthetic mixtures with various proportions of crystalline and amorphous sucrose were prepared. The following linear regression between DeltaC(p) and amorphous content was obtained: DeltaC(p)=0.0075x - 0.0…
5,12-Diselena-3,4,13,14-tetraazatricyclo[9.3.0.02,6]tetradeca-3,13-diene
2020
The title compound, C8H8N4Se2, crystallizes in a non-symmetrical conformation with a dihedral angle between the heterocycles of 45.0 (3)° and a nearly strain-free tetramethylene tether. The crystal studied was non-merohedrally twinned with a fractional contribution of 0.342 (3) for the minor twin component.
Phase equilibria and multiple azeotropy in the associating system methanol + diethylamine
1997
Vapor−liquid equilibrium has been measured for the binary system of methanol (1) + diethylamine (2) at 101.3 and 300 kPa. Both equilibrium isobars show strong deviations from ideal behavior and a single maximum boiling point azeotrope of practically constant composition x1 ≈ 0.76, corresponding to a temperature of 339.8 K at 101.3 kPa and 370.0 K at 300 kPa. The trend of the high-pressure isobar data is consistent with the formation of a second minimum boiling azeotrope, confirming the multiple azeotropic behavior found by others at a higher temperature (398.58 K). Furthermore, the excess Gibbs energy is negative and inflects markedly with composition with increased pressure. The equilibriu…
