Luminescence processes induced by UV radiation in A1N nanotips and nanorods

Abstract The processes of the UV radiation induced photoluminescence, thermoluminescence and optically stimulated luminescence in the AlN nanotips and nanorods are studied in comparison with those in the AlN ceramics. The emission spectra of the UV radiation induced luminescence processes in the AlN nanostructures are similar to those of AlN ceramics, presumably originating from recombination processes with participation of the oxygen-related centres. In the nanostructures the luminescence processes occur mainly through the excitation of the host lattice, probably due to the smaller content of the randomly distributed defects in the lattice. Trap spectroscopy and tunnelling luminescence in feldspars

Abstract Comparative studies of tunnel luminescence, thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL), and trap energy spectra by the fractional glow technique (FGT) have been made both with sanidine and microcline feldspars. After X-irradiation at LNT these feldspars show intense tunnelling afterglow. As the temperature is raised, several TSL glow peaks may be observed, starting at 135 K. An intense peak at 250 K is common to all four investigated microclines. In samples of sanidine, tunnelling afterglow overcomes TSL up to 250–260 K. With sanidine and microcline samples, the distributions of trap activation energies vs temperature obtained by the FGT are continuous and quasi-linear. Maxima in the …

Determination of the irradiation field at the research reactor TRIGA Mainz for BNCT.

For the application of the BNCT for the excorporal treatment of organs at the TRIGA Mainz, the basic characteristics of the radiation field in the thermal column as beam geometry, neutron and gamma ray energies, angular distributions, neutron flux, as well as absorbed gamma and neutron doses must be determined in a reproducible way. To determine the mixed irradiation field thermoluminescence detectors (TLD) made of CaF(2):Tm with a newly developed energy-compensation filter system and LiF:Mg,Ti materials with different (6)Li concentrations and different thicknesses as well as thin gold foils were used.

Environmental radioactivity at Stromboli (Aeolian Islands)

HPGe gamma spectrometry, thermoluminescence dosimetry, X-ray diffractometry and fluorescence techniques have been used to analyze the natural radionuclides content of soil and rock samples, air kerma and geochemical features on the island of Stromboli, belonging to the Aeolian Islands, in the Mediterranean Sea. The 214Bi, 238Ac, and 40K contents obtained are in agreement with the magmatic evolution of the rock formation, as shown by the correlations between radionuclide and chemical elements abundacies, depending on the various magmatic differentiation mechanisms. UV light energy storage and thermoluminescence in AlN ceramics

AlN ceramics, untreated and subjected to oxygen ion implantation, are studied for potential application in TL dosimetry of UV light. Based on photoluminescence and thermoluminescence measurements there are shown advantages of the selection of the 480 emission band for TL signal recording instead of the previously used 400 nm band: higher intensity of the TL signal, lower fading rate of the accumulated TL signal, excitation region (270-340 nm) corresponding to UV-B range, monitoring of which is actual in UV dosimetry. Evaluation of the relative thermoluminescence efficiency of LiF:Mg,Ti and LiF:Mg,Cu,P TL detectors to low-energy heavy ions

Abstract The most popular types of LiF-based thermoluminescent (TL) detectors, LiF:Mg,Ti (MTS-N) and LiF:Mg,Cu,P (MCP-N), have been investigated, with respect to their dose (fluence) response and relative TL efficiency to different ion species. The detectors were irradiated using the nitrogen, iron, krypton and xenon ion beams, at energies ranging from 5.0 to 9.3 MeV/n. Supra- and sublinear response was found, for the MTS-N and MCP-N, respectively, similarly as observed for γ-rays. Modelling glow curves of thermoluminescent radiometric devices

Thermoluminescent (TLD) radiation dosimeters enjoy wide usage due to low cost and simplicity of use. They however require complex device modelling in order to extract the measured dose. A new glow peak model and fit method are presented, that offer a more robust fit to the glow-curves and allows operators to enter visually inspectable parameters (rather than physical quantities difficult to estimate from the visual inspection of the glow curves themselves). Fits performed on the GLOCANIN-challenge's RefGlow-002 and RefGlow-009 [2] are presented, highlighting the good performance of the GEMINI C++ code written.

Thermostimulated luminescence and electron spin resonance in X-ray- and photon-irradiated oxygen-deficient silica

Abstract Influences of oxygen-deficiency on radiation properties of high-purity, low-OH fused silica were studied. It is found that thermostimulated luminescence (TSL) peaks are different for photo (7.7 eV) and X-ray excitation at 77 K. X-ray excitation produces TSL peaks at 125 and 170 K corresponding to the anneal temperatures of two types of self-trapped holes centers STH2 and STH1, respectively, detected by electron spin resonance (ESR). Oxygen-deficiency apparently increases the number of electron traps, stabilizing a larger number of STHs in the continuous defect-free silica network than is observed in similarly X-irradiated stoichiometric silica glasses. Potential application of some wide band gap materials for UV dosimetry

Properties of some wide band gap materials–natural and CVD diamonds – have been studied for their potential application in UV dosimetry, using methods of optically stimulated luminescence and thermoluminescence. The observed properties are compared with those of the previously studied AlN ceramics. From the OSL excitation spectra, it follows that spectral sensitivity of the studied materials falls mainly into the UVC range, OSL and TL emission spectra are located within the visible light region, thus suitable for usual photodetectors.
