Epoxy resin plays a key role in composite matrices and DGEBA is the major precursor used. With the aim of favouring the use of bio resources, epoxy resins can be prepared from lignin. In particular, diglycidyl ether of isoeugenol derivatives are good candidates for the replacement of DGEBA. This article presents an effective and eco-friendly way to prepare epoxy resin derived from isoeugenol (BioIgenox), making its upscale possible. BioIgenox has been totally characterized by NMR, FTIR, MS and elemental analyses. Curing of BioIgenox and camphoric anhydride with varying epoxide function/anhydride molar ratios has allowed determining an optimum ratio near 1/0.9 based on DMA and DSC analyses a…

A review on basalt fibre and its composites

2015

Abstract In recent years, both industrial and academic world are focussing their attention toward the development of sustainable composites, reinforced with natural fibres. In particular, among the natural fibres (i.e. animal, vegetable or mineral) that can be used as reinforcement, the basalt ones represent the most interesting for their properties. The aim of this review is to illustrate the results of research on this topical subject. In the introduction, mechanical, thermal and chemical properties of basalt fibre have been reviewed. Moreover, its main manufacturing technologies have been described. Then, the effect of using this mineral fibre as reinforcement of different matrices as po…

Curing of an epoxy resin modified with nanoclay monitored by dielectric spectroscopy and rheological measurements

2006

Dielectric and rheological measurements have been performed in “real-time” to follow curing reaction on blends of a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A epoxy resin with 4,4-methylene bis(2,6-diethylaniline) hardener and different amounts of organically modified nanoclay (Nanofil 919) as modifier. The effect of the modifier and its amount on the curing reaction, as well as that of the curing temperature has been studied. Changes in molecular mobility in the reaction mixture have been investigated by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. Evolutions of ionic conductivity and main relaxation have been analyzed and vitrification times have been obtained and compared with those obtained by rheological …

The effect of a liquid CTBN rubber modifier on the thermo-kinetic parameters of an epoxy resin during a pultrusion process

2003

Abstract Rheo-kinetic behaviour of an epoxy resin, coupled with an anhydride hardener, with different CTBN liquid rubber concentration (0–15 phr), used in fibre reinforced plastics, was analysed comparing experimental data with theoretical models. The modelling of technological pultrusion process for thermoset matrix composites, developed through a numerical code realised with MATLAB, is reported, too. The model includes conduction and cure heat, degree of cure and viscosity evolution during the curing within the die. Considerable differences in process condition, using different rubber amount, are obtained. The numerical modelling of process conditions shows that the CTBN rubber presence i…

Modelling of phase transitions and residual thermal stress of CTBN rubber modified epoxy resins during a pultrusion process

2007

Abstract The implicit finite difference and fourth order Runge-Kutta method are used both to solve the heat transfer problem in the pultrusion reaction and to calculate the temperature and conversion distributions within a thermoset composite profile. The aim of our work is to study the influence of a rubbery phase added to the epoxy matrix in production conditions. The results have shown that the rubber modified systems have a low exothermic temperature peak value, so that neither the amount of cured resin nor the final product properties are limited. First of all we will show that the phase transition (gelation and vitrification) zones within the die change as the amount of rubber varies …

Photoelastic stress analysis assisted evaluation of fracture toughness in hydrothermally aged epoxies

2014

The present work has investigated the fracture toughness of a model DGEBA epoxy system subject to Hidro-Thermal aging. A Photoelastic Stress Analysis technique has been implemented, showing the evolution of stresses arising throughout the water uptake process due to the non-uniform swelling of the material. Gravimetric and Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analyses have further complemented the characterization, showing the onset of plasticization effects with aging. The correlation of all previous characterizations has allowed to conclude that an increase of KIC fracture toughness is obtained at the fully saturated condition. In particular Photoelasticity has also revealed the onset of relevant s…

A Novel Histogram for Partial Discharge Signals in HV Insulating Systems

1986

A technique for relating measurable electrical quantities with energies dissipated inside a void in highly electrically stressed insulation is presented. It is based on measuring, for each apparent discharge level qe, the algebraic sum of the external energy pulses of all discharges having a value qe and occurring over some cycles of test voltage. Theoretical investigations show that the results of such external energy summations are equal to the energies dissipated in the void. A novel histogram is also suggested which relates the apparent discharge amplitudes with their respective energies in the void. Experimental tests were carried out under controlled conditions with samples of thermop…

Sustainable access to biobased biphenol epoxy resins by electrochemical dehydrogenative dimerization of eugenol

2019

Limited fossil resources require innovative monomers and polymers derived from renewable feedstocks such as plant biomass. Thermosetting epoxy resins largely rely on petrochemical bisphenol-type monomers, which give high performance materials but are controversial due to their effects on human health. Herein, we present two biobased epoxy resins by direct dehydrogenative dimerization of eugenol, the main component of clove oil. Taking the Principles of Green Chemistry into account, we developed electrochemical dehydrodimerization at reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) electrodes using methanol as environmentally benign solvent. Thus, fluorinated solvents such as 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropa…

Thermosetting composites based on bronze particles for archaeological and artistic metal heritage cloning

2018

peer-reviewed Artificial Metals are polymeric semi-metallic composites obtained by combining thermosetting resins with atomized metal powders in order to achieve composite materials capable of reproducing metals, even in a rusty or corroded condition. These composites provide a solution for the reproduction of archaeological artefacts, sculptures, and ornaments for the purpose of conservation. This work explores mechanical properties of three different resins bronze composites loaded with two different proportions of metal filler. The degree of conversion of the samples was measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and flexural tests were carried out to determine their mechanical …

Epoxy resins as a matrix material in advanced fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites

2013

Abstract: This chapter discusses the epoxy resins which, thanks to their good and versatile properties, can be considered nowadays the most important class of thermosetting polymers. In particular the chapter first reviews both the epoxy resins commonly available on the market, including a new class of bio-derived epoxy resins, and the most-used curing agents. it then describes the principal characteristics of the epoxy resins and how it is possible to enhance them by adding several fillers to the epoxy system. Finally, the chapter analyzes the main engineering fields in which epoxy resins find application today and their possible future utilization.
