Carotid Artery Disease in the Era of Biomarkers: A Pilot Study
2023
The intima-media thickness (IMT) and its irregularities or ulcerations in the common carotid artery (CCA) are useful tools as sentinel biomarkers for the integrity of the cardiovascular system. Total homocysteine and lipoprotein levels are the most commonly used elements in cardiovascular risk stratification. Duplex ultrasound (DUS), associated with serum biomarkers, can be used simply to assess the degree of atherosclerotic disease and cardiovascular risk. This study highlights the role of different kinds of biomarkers, showing their usefulness and potentiality in multi-district atherosclerotic patients, especially for early diagnosis and therapy effectiveness monitoring. A retrospective a…
European Panel on Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Subclasses: A Statement on the Pathophysiology, Atherogenicity and Clinical Significance of LDL Subcl…
2011
Item does not contain fulltext Aim of the present Consensus Statement is to provide a comprehensive and up to-date document on the pathophysiology, atherogenicity and clinical significance of low density liproproteins (LDL) subclasses. We sub-divided our statement in 2 sections. section I discusses the pathophysiology, atherogenicity and measurement issues, while section II is focused on the effects of drug and lifestyle modifications. Suggestions for future research in the field are highlighted at the end of section II. Each section includes Conclusions.

INVERSE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN CHOROIDAL THICKNESS AND RENAL RESISTANCE INDEX IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS
2019
Introduction: Alterations of the renal microcirculation have been documented in animal models of hypertensive renal damage. Traditionally, the retina has been considered the easiest accessible window to study the systemic microcirculation, even though the choroid is the most important vascular layer of the eye. The introduction in the past few years of advanced optical coherence tomography (OCT) techniques has greatly increased our understanding of the choroid. Although the renal resistive index (RRI) was initially considered to reflect intrarenal vascular pathological processes, this index is actually regarded as the result of complex interaction between renal and systemic vascular wall pr…
Relationship of choroidal thickness with pulsatile hemodynamics in essential hypertensive patients
2021
Controversy exists about the association of choroidal thickness (CTh) with blood pressure (BP) values. There is some evidence suggesting that central hemodynamics changes are associated with microvascular disease. Our study was aimed to assess the relationships between CTh and clinic and 24-h BP and between CTh and estimated 24-h aortic pulse pressure (aPP), 24-h aortic systolic BP (aSBP), and 24-h aortic augmentation index (aAIx) in a group of hypertensive patients. We enrolled 158 hypertensive subjects (mean age 48 ± 13 years) all of which underwent evaluation of the choroidal district by Swept-Source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) and 24-h BP monitoring, in order to measure periph…
Effect of the color of the intraocular lens on optical and visual quality
2014
Purpose: To analyze the optical quality of intraocular lenses (IOL) with an orange (PC440Y) and a yellow (SN60AT) filter, and correlate these results with the visual quality of patients with these implants. Setting: Fisabio Oftalmología Médica, Valencia, Spain. Design: Randomized prospective study. Materials and Methods: The IOL optical quality was determined using the modulation transfer function (MTF) and the spectral transmission. The visual quality of 87 eyes with cataract (51 with orange filter and 36 with yellow filter) was determined by best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and contrast sensitivity function (CSF) under photopic and mesopic conditions. To analyze the results, we use a S…
Choroidal thickness is associated with renal hemodynamics in essential hypertension
2020
The choroid is the most vascularized structure of the eye and plays a central role in the development of the retinal vascular changes that occur in arterial hypertension. Changes of choroidal thickness (ChT) assessed by optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology could reflect the vascular complications of hypertension. Also, intrarenal hemodynamic damage, associated with endothelial dysfunction, demonstrated to be a good indicator of systemic morphofunctional arterial impairment. The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between ChT and renal hemodynamics in subjects with essential hypertension. Routine laboratory tests, clinical history, and physical examination, including blo…
Radzenes biezuma un acs refrakcijas korelācija bērniem.
2020
Delamination study of Z-pinned composite laminates via two-phase interface model.
2008
One of the most effective technique, developed over the last decade, to enhance the strength of the composite laminates in the thickness direction (z-direction), is the through-thickness reinforcement in form of stitching [2], [4] or short rods inserting [3]. These reinforcing fibres, providing direct closure tractions to the potential delamination crack faces (bridging effect), increase the interlaminar fracture toughness. The reinforcement system can be applied extensively to the composite laminate or restricted to those critical structural zones that are subjected to high interlaminar stresses. The through-thickness reinforcement is also used in composite-composite assemblages where, cou…
Histologic analysis of specimens from laparoscopic endometrioma excision performed by different surgeons: does the surgeon matter?
2011
Objective To evaluate whether the amount of ovarian tissue inadvertently removed along with the endometrioma cyst wall at laparoscopy differs in relation to the operating surgeon's level of expertise. Design Multicenter, prospective trial. Setting Four tertiary care university hospitals. Patient(s) Fifty patients, aged 25 to 40 years, with monolateral ovarian endometriomas who underwent laparoscopic excision. Intervention(s) Operation with the stripping technique by surgeons with specific expertise in endometriosis surgery in four centers (groups A, B, C, and D) and by residents with average training in laparoscopic surgery (group E). Main Outcome Measure(s) Histologic examination for the e…
