Uneven economic burden of non-communicable diseases among Indian households: A comparative analysis
2021
Background Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading global cause of death and disproportionately concentrate among those living in low-income and middle-income countries. However, its economic impact on households remains less well known in the Indian context. This study aims to assess the economic impact of NCDs in terms of out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE) and its catastrophic impact on NCDs affected households in India. Materials and methods Data were collected from the 75th round of the National Sample Survey Office, Government of India, conducted in the year 2017–18. This is the latest round of data available on health, which constitutes a sample of 113,823 households. The coll…
Priming of host resistance to protect cultured rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss against eye flukes and parasite-induced cataracts
2010
In the present study, immunologically naive rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were experimentally exposed to a low-level Diplostomum spathaceum (Trematoda) infection to stimulate acquired resistance and, along with unexposed controls, were subsequently exposed to natural infection for 8 weeks. The priming of the host resistance, designed to simulate a procedure applicable in aquaculture, decreased the number of establishing parasites compared to untreated controls by the end of the experiment. This effect was slow and did not protect the fish against the parasite-induced cataracts. The results suggest that this type of priming of host resistance is probably inefficient in preventing the del…
Mechanisms of protein expression in the rat optic nerve: Modifications by alcohol exposure
2005
The composition of fluids stored in the central Mexican lithospheric mantle: Inferences from noble gases and CO2 in mantle xenoliths
2021
We present the first isotopic (noble gases and CO2) characterization of fluid inclusions coupled to Raman microspectroscopy analyses in mantle xenoliths from Central Mexico, a geodynamically complex area where the Basin and Range extension was superimposed on the Farallon subduction (terminated at 28 Ma). To characterize the isotopic signature of the Central Mexican lithospheric mantle, we focus on fluid inclusions entrapped in mantle xenoliths found in deposits of the Joya Honda maar (JH), a Quaternary monogenetic volcano belonging to the Ventura Espiritu Santo Volcanic Field (VESVF) in the state of San Luis Potosí (central Mexico). Thirteen ultramafic plagioclase-free xenoliths were selec…
Helminth infracommunities of Gallotia caesaris caesaris and Gallotia caesaris gomerae (Sauria: Lacertidae) from the Canary Islands (Eastern Atlantic).
2004
A survey of gastrointestinal helminth communities of Gallotia caesaris caesaris (Lehrs, 1914) and G. c. gomerae (Boettger and Muller, 1914), from the islands of El Hierro and La Gomera, respectively, in the Canary Archipelago, Spain, was conducted to determine the prevalence, intensity, and diversity of intestinal parasites of these lacertid lizards. Larval forms of cestodes, nematodes, and acanthocephalans were found in the body cavity of G. c. caesaris; this lizard is the intermediate or paratenic host in the life cycle of these helminths. Pharyngodonid nematodes were the most common intestinal helminths in both hosts, 4 of them being Gallotia spp. specialists. Helminth infracommunities o…
Evidence for shared environmental contributions to attention-deficit/hyperactivity traits. A twin study
2019
Background and objectives: Behavior-genetic analyses have shown that measurements of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity are genetically-influenced. In view of limited studies on ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in Spanish samples, this study aims to explore the genetic architecture of ADHD symptoms; inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity in a Spanish twin schoolchildren sample. Methods: Participants were 258 pairs of adolescent Spanish twins. Symptoms of ADHD, inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity were assessed by means of a sub-scale of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Univariate twin models, according to sex, were run to assess the heritability of…
Midgut aminopeptidase N isoforms from Ostrinia nubilalis: Activity characterization and differential binding to Cry1Ab and Cry1Fa proteins from Bacil…
2013
Aminopeptidase N (APN) isoforms from Lepidoptera are known for their involvement in the mode of action of insecticidal Cry proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis. These enzymes belong to a protein family with at least eight different members that are expressed simultaneously in the midgut of lepidopteran larvae. Here, we focus on the characterization of the APNs from Ostrinia nubilalis (OnAPNs) to identify potential Cry receptors. We expressed OnAPNs in insect cells using a baculovirus system and analyzed their enzymatic activity by probing substrate specificity and inhibitor susceptibility. The interaction with Cry1Ab and Cry1Fa proteins (both found in transgenic insect-resistant maize) was …
Disassembly of structurally modified viral nanoparticles: characterization by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy.
2005
Abstract Analysis of the breakdown products of engineered viral particles can give useful information on the particle structure. We used various methods to breakdown both a recombinant enveloped virus and virus-like particles (VLPs) from two non-enveloped viruses and analysed the resulting subunits by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). Analysis of the enveloped baculovirus, Autographa californica multicapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV), displaying the green fluorescent protein (GFP) fused to its envelope protein gp64 was performed in the presence and absence of 5 mM SDS and 25 mM DTT. Without treatment, the viral particle showed a diffusion time of 3.3 ms. In the presence of SDS…
Applying Benford’s Law to Monitor Death Registration Data: A Management Tool for the COVID-19 Pandemic
2021
In Spain, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the various regions of the country differ7 ently. The availability of reliable and up-to-date information has proved to be fundamental for the 8 management of this health crisis. However, especially during the first wave of the pandemic (Feb9 ruary-August 2020), the disparity in the recording criteria and in the timing of providing these fig10 ures to the central government created controversy and confusion regarding the real dimension of 11 the pandemic. It is therefore necessary to have objective and homogeneous criteria at the national 12 level to guide health managers in the correct recording and evaluation of the magnitude of the pan13 demic…
Crescere in IPM.
