Cestodes from Hector's beaked whale ( Mesoplodon hectori ) and spectacled porpoise ( Phocoena dioptrica ) from Argentinean waters.
2010
Single individuals of 2 little-known cetacean species, Mesoplodon hectori and Phocoena dioptrica, stranded and died on the coast of Argentina (Buenos Aires and Chubut provinces, respectively) and were studied for the presence of helminths. The cestodes found were described and illustrated using light microscopy. The following cestode taxa were recovered: Tetrabothrius (Tetrabothrius) hobergi n. sp. (several fragmented specimens, at least 1 gravid) and Tetrabothrius (s.l.) sp. 1 (several fragmented immature specimens) from M. hectori, and Tetrabothrius (s.l.) sp. 2 (single fragmented immature specimen) and 2 morphotypes of tetraphyllidean larvae from P. dioptrica. Tetrabothrius (T.) hobergi …
Strauta foreļu Salmo trutta L. dzīvotņu vērtējums, izmantojot dažādas THS indikatora parametru mērīšanas metodes
2019
2021
[EN] The archaeological excavations that have been carried out in the Hispano-Roman city of Valeria have exhumed the remains of a thermal complex from the 1st century AD that it was in service for four centuries and that, after its abandonment, it was barely spoiled for its constructive and decorative materials. This circumstance has allowed the conservation of a paving mosaic in a good state of preservation. In this same room has been recovered an important collection of fragments corresponding to the parietal musive decoration that constitutes a unique corpus in the Roman archaeology of the province of Cuenca. Due to the historical-archaeological importance of this type of elements, a met…
The parasite's long arm: a tapeworm parasite induces behavioural changes in uninfected group members of its social host.
2015
Parasites can induce alterations in host phenotypes in order to enhance their own survival and transmission. Parasites of social insects might not only benefit from altering their individual hosts, but also from inducing changes in uninfected group members. Temnothorax nylanderi ant workers infected with the tapeworm Anomotaenia brevis are known to be chemically distinct from nest-mates and do not contribute to colony fitness, but are tolerated in their colonies and well cared for. Here, we investigated how tapeworm- infected workers affect colony aggression by manipulating their presence in ant colonies and analysing whether their absence or presence resulted in behavioural alterations in…
Discovering the Senses of an Ambiguous Word by Clustering its Local Contexts
2005
As has been shown recently, it is possible to automatically discover the senses of an ambiguous word by statistically analyzing its contextual behavior in a large text corpus. However, this kind of research is still at an early stage. The results need to be improved and there is considerable disagreement on methodological issues. For example, although most researchers use clustering approaches for word sense induction, it is not clear what statistical features the clustering should be based on. Whereas so far most researchers cluster global co-occurrence vectors that reflect the overall behavior of a word in a corpus, in this paper we argue that it is more appropriate to use local context v…
Termini Imerese. Indagini nell'edificio termale
2018
In this paper, we present the results of archaeological samples conducted in 2010 in the seventeenth-century thermal baths at Termini Imerese. The excavations made it possible to find for the first time some parts of the caldarium of the Roman baths. Some sections of the perimeter wall and the paving of the external ambulatory of the building were identified, as well as a small portion of the narrow internal ambulatory, bordered by a pillared portico that overlooked the circular swimming pool, intended for hot baths, located in the centre of the structure. Some remains of the architectural decoration allow to date the building at the beginning of the first century A.D.
Sensory adaptation of antennae and sex pheromone-mediated flight behavior in male oriental fruit moths (Leptidoptera: Tortricidae) after prolonged ex…
2013
Sensory adaptation has been measured in the antennae of male Grapholita molesta (Busck) after 15 min of exposure to its main pheromone compound (Z)-8-dodecen-1-yl acetate (Z8-12:OAc) at the aerial concentration of 1 ng/m(3) measured in orchards treated with pheromone for mating disruption. Exposing males to this aerial concentration of Z8-12:OAc for 15 min, however, had only a small effect on their ability to orientate by flight to virgin calling females in a flight tunnel. Experiments were undertaken to determine if exposure to the main pheromone compound in combination with the two biologically active minor compounds of this species, (E)-8-dodecen-1-yl acetate (E8-12:OAc) and (Z)-8-dodece…
Potential of the Bacillus thuringiensis Toxin Reservoir for the Control of Lobesia botrana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), a Major Pest of Grape Plants▿
2006
ABSTRACT The potential of Bacillus thuringiensis Cry proteins to control the grape pest Lobesia botrana was explored by testing first-instar larvae with Cry proteins belonging to the Cry1, Cry2, and Cry9 groups selected for their documented activities against Lepidoptera. Cry9Ca, a toxin from B. thuringiensis , was the protein most toxic to L. botrana larvae, followed in decreasing order by Cry2Ab, Cry1Ab, Cry2Aa, and Cry1Ia7, with 50% lethal concentration values of 0.09, 0.1, 1.4, 3.2, and 8.5 μg/ml of diet, respectively. In contrast, Cry1Fa and Cry1JA were not active at the assayed concentration (100 μg/ml). In vitro binding and competition experiments showed that none of the toxins teste…
