The role of combined techniques of scintigraphy and SPECT/CT in the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism

2019

RATIONALE Primary hyperparathyroidism, usually as a result of a hyperfunctioning parathyroid gland, represents more than 90% cases of patients evaluated for hypercalcemia. Combined techniques of preoperative scintigraphy and SPECT/CT serve as a successful minimally-invasive parathyroidectomy. This recent imaging method provides four-dimensional functional images with advanced contrast resolution which greatly facilitates preoperative localization of parathyroid adenomas. PATIENT CONCERNS We presented the case of a male Caucasian patient, aged 67 years, who was investigated for hypercalcemia. Increased levels of parathormone, cervical ultrasonography without pathological changes, and negativ…

Antibiotic Prophylaxis for Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

2020

Objective: Although thyroid and parathyroid surgery is considered a clean procedure with a low incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs), a great number of endocrine surgeons use antibiotic prophylaxis (AP). The aim of this study was to assess whether AP is significantly effective in reducing the incidence of SSIs in this kind of surgery. Data Sources: A systematic literature search was performed with PubMed, Scopus, and ISI–Web of Science. Studies addressing the efficacy of AP in reducing the incidence of SSIs in thyroid and parathyroid surgery were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. Review Methods: The random effects model was assumed to account for different sources …

Prediction of bone mass gain by bone turnover parameters after parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism: neural network software statistical…

2006

Background Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is the most frequent endocrine hypersecretion disease, and parathyroidectomy is the only curative option, since pharmacologic therapy reduces hypercalcemia but does not impede parathyroid hormone hypersecretion. According to guidelines from the National Institutes of Health, parathyroidectomy is associated with bone mass increase in some asymptomatic patients, while in others bone mass is not changed after surgery. Therefore, we performed the present study in an attempt to elucidate whether a preoperative biochemical bone parameter can be predictive of a significant vertebral bone mass increase in patients with pHPT. Methods For each patient we …

Pili Annulati Coincident with Alopecia Areata, Autoimmune Thyroid Disease, and Primary IgA Deficiency: Case Report and Considerations on the Literatu…

2012

Pili annulati is a rare autosomal dominant hair disorder clinically characterized by a pattern of alternating bright and dark bands of the hair, the bright bands appearing dark if observed by transmitted light. This pattern is due to the periodic occurrence of air-filled cavities along the hair cortex which scatter and reflect the light while precluding its transmission. A susceptibility region, including a possibly responsible Frizzled gene, has been mapped to the telomeric region of chromosome 12q, although a specific mutation has not been identified. The condition has sometimes been observed in concurrence with alopecia areata, and in this paper we report a case in whom the concomitant s…

Papillary cystic acinic cell carcinoma: report of a rare lesion with unusual presentation

2011

Introduction: Acinic cell carcinoma is an uncommon low grade tumour of the salivary glands that constitutes 2.5 to 4% of parotid gland tumours. Acinic cell carcinoma -Papillary cystic variant (ACC-PCV) is histologically composed of tumor with papillary and cystic growth patterns, with varying proportions of one or more cell types. It has been conferred significance because it has a poorer prognosis and is reported to be universally fatal in ten years. Case Report: We present a case of ACC-PCV in a sixteen year old male with unusual unicystic gross appearance, benign cytological picture and characteristic histopathological features .Cystic areas with papillary projection of surrounding cells…

Metabolomics provides new information on the changes occurring in thyroid tumours

2013

Metabolomics is a part of systems biology dealing with the determination of qualitative and quantitative profile of low molecular weight compounds (metabolites) present in body fluids and tissues of living organisms. Metabolic composition is strongly dependent on the state of homeostasis and any deregulation should affect it. For this reason, there is now increased interest in metabolomics as a potential tool to support cancer research. At the same time the analysis of metabolic pathways involved in the process of carcinogenesis provides the possibility of a more complete understanding of the mechanisms that are critical for tumour biology. In this study, 1H NMR measurements were performed …

Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer in Sicily: The Role of Environmental Characteristics

2017

Background: Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is a rare but extremely aggressive cancer of the thyroid, contributing up to 30-40% of thyroid cancer-specific mortality. We analyzed ATC characteristics and survival rates in Sicily to evaluate the possible influence of environmental factors. With this aim data regarding ATC incidences in urban/rural and industrial, iodine deficient and volcanic vs. control areas were compared in Sicily as well as ATC data from Sicily and USA. Methods: Using the Sicilian Register of Thyroid Cancer (SRTC) database incidence, age, gender, tumor size and histotype, extrathyroidal extension, stage and coexistence with pre-existing differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) …

Langerhans cell histiocytosis with oral manifestations: a rare and unusual case report

2012

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), is a rare, proliferative disorder in which the accumulation of pathologic Langerhans cells leads to local tissue infiltration and destruction. We present a case of a 32 years old, completely edentulous female patient who presented with erythema of hard palate, maxillary alveolar mucosa and mucosa over the distobuccal part of mandibular alveolar ridge with foci of ulcerations. Histopathologic features were suggestive of LCH which was confirmed by immunohistochemistry which was CD1a positive, confirmatory for LCH. Bone scan revealed multiple bone involvement. At this stage, disease had already progressed to multisystem involvement with endocrinal abnormali…

In Vitro Identification and Characterization of CD133pos Cancer Stem-Like Cells in Anaplastic Thyroid Carcinoma Cell Lines

2008

BackgroundRecent publications suggest that neoplastic initiation and growth are dependent on a small subset of cells, termed cancer stem cells (CSCs). Anaplastic Thyroid Carcinoma (ATC) is a very aggressive solid tumor with poor prognosis, characterized by high dedifferentiation. The existence of CSCs might account for the heterogeneity of ATC lesions. CD133 has been identified as a stem cell marker for normal and cancerous tissues, although its biological function remains unknown.Methodology/principal findingsATC cell lines ARO, KAT-4, KAT-18 and FRO were analyzed for CD133 expression. Flow cytometry showed CD133(pos) cells only in ARO and KAT-4 (64+/-9% and 57+/-12%, respectively). These …
