THE TUMOR CELL IDENTITY: A GATEWAY TO THE MOLECULAR BASIS OF MALIGNANT TRANSFORMATION
It is now well established that within a tumor mass there is a hierarchical organization, stemming from a cell subpopulation retaining the highest tumorigenic potential, referred as cancer stem cells (CSCs), responsible for tumor initiation and progression. Although recent advances in stem cell biology led to the acquisition of new view of thyroid carcinoma as a stem cell disease, the cellular origin of thyroid CSCs remains unknown. In Chapter 1 it is critically discussed the potential role of thyroid stem cells (TSCs) in light of the available information on the oncogenic role of genetic alterations underlying the thyroid carcinogenesis. Understanding the key events that regulate thyroid t…

Non-recurrent laryngeal nerve coexisting with ipsilateral recurrent nerve: personal experience and literature review.
2011
Introduction. Non-recurrence and variations in ascending course of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) represent a risk factor for nerve injuries during thyroid surgery. Non-recurrent laryngeal nerve (NRLN) coexisting to recurrent nerve branch is a rare anatomyc anomaly. It could be a cause of nerve injuries during thyroidectomy. A systematic intraoperative nerve identification may allow an effectiveness prevention of iatrogenic injuries. Case report. We report one case of a young woman underwent to total thyroidectomy (TT) for papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) where we found a rare variation of the right inferior laryngeal nerve anatomy. We identified both right laryngeal nerve structures …
Effect of thyroid function on assisted reproduction outcomes in euthyroid infertile women: A single center retrospective data analysis and a systemat…
2022
BackgroundThe influence of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) on gestational outcomes have been studied and checked whether differing TSH levels are relevant on human reproduction outcomes. International guidelines recommend TSH values <2.5 mIU/L in women trying to conceive, since values above this level are related to a higher frequency of adverse reproductive outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate whether TSH values correlate with different gestational outcomes in euthyroid infertile women without autoimmune thyroid disease.MethodsA retrospective cohort study was conducted involving 256 women who underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. The participants were divided into tw…
« Thyroid diseases and food: creating a follow-up and support device for patients ».
2022
Part of project "ThyroSIC - Thyroid Disease Trajectory: Communication and Publicization“, this study looks into the possibility of creating a participative and follow up device in collaboration with patients’ associations but also the hospital center and professionals. This will allow us to respond to the needs related to the lack of awareness of the population, to prevention actions but also to the follow-up and support of patients (such as the need to set up therapeutic education devices).
OR18-01 Effect of Teprotumumab on Proptosis Reduction Across Various Demographic Sub-Groups
2020
Abstract Introduction: Teprotumumab, an insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor inhibitory monoclonal antibody, was recently shown to significantly reduce proptosis in patients with active, moderate-to-severe thyroid eye disease (TED) in phase 2 and phase 3 clinical trials.1,2 Prior analyses have demonstrated a combined trial proptosis response (≥2 mm reduction) rate of 77.4% in the teprotumumab group and 14.9% in the placebo group after 24 weeks of therapy (p < 0.001).3 The current analysis was performed to investigate whether or not patient demographic characteristics influence the teprotumumab proptosis response. Methods: Data from two 24-week randomized, double-masked, placebo-cont…
L’IPOTIROIDISMO NELLE PERSONE ANZIANE: IMPORTANZA DI UNA ADEGUATA TERAPIA SOSTITUTIVA ORMONALE
2013

Thyroid Disorders in Old Age
2019
Thyroid disorders are more frequent in old age, especially in women. Overt thyroid dysfunction may manifest as aging itself or as age-associated disorders of other organs. Therefore, an accurate clinical suspicion is essential for their detection in elders with multiple comorbidities, malnutrition, and chronic polypharmacy. Because chronic diseases are more prevalent in old age, nonthyroidal illness is also common in this age group. Most thyroid nodules in older persons are benign, yet a comprehensive individualized evaluation is needed in order to timely detect malignancy. While there is still debate on the decision to treat or not to treat subclinical thyroid disorders, current recommenda…
SAT-429 Systemic Safety Analysis of Mycophenolate in Graves’ Orbitopathy
2020
Abstract Context The dual antiproliferative mechanism of mycophenolate appears to be beneficial in Graves’ orbitopathy (GO). Methods The safety data, which is of utmost importance in immunomodulation, from the two major randomized mycophenolate trials [“Chinese trial” (1) and “European Group on Graves’ Orbitopathy (EUGOGO) trial” (2)] and the original database of the EUGOGO trial were systematically analyzed. Treatment efficacy stratified by individual visual parameters of clinical disease activity and severity were also compared. Results A total of 129 adverse events (AE) involving 50 patients (29.4%) were noted among all mycophenolate-treated patients. Mycophenolate sodium plus intravenou…
