Eye gaze as a resource in handling trouble around mobile devices in classroom interaction
2022
This paper offers an insight into how interaction is multimodally built during taskaccomplishment around mobile devices in classroom interaction. More specifically, it investigates eye gaze as a resource in recruiting help and pursuing response from peers during interactional or task-related trouble sequences. The data come from video-recorded lessons at Finnish comprehensive schools where mobile devices are used for learning tasks. Drawing on multimodal conversation analysis, the article demonstrates that gaze is employed by pupils as one of the first resources to display and address trouble. Although tasks often require gaze to be directed at devices, it can be flexibly reoriented to peer…
Ristiriitoja ja reflektiota : opettajien näkemyksiä vuorovaikutuksessa tapahtuvasta arvioinnista
2021
Prescription opioid use and employment : A nationwide Finnish register study
2021
Background: The secular decline in labor market participation and the concurrent increase in opioid use in many developed countries have sparked a policy debate on the possible connection between these two trends. We examined whether the use of prescription opioids was connected to labor market outcomes relating to participation, employment and unemployment among the Finnish population. Methods: The working-age population (aged 19–64 years) living in Finland during the period 1995–2016 was used in the analyses (consisting of 67 903 701 person-year observations). Lagged values of prescription opioid use per capita were used as the exposure. Instrumental variables (IV) estimation method was u…
Multimodaaliset resurssit viittomakielisten oppilaiden suomen kielen tunnilla : neksusanalyyttinen tutkimus
2016
Tutkin maisterintutkielmassani välityskeinoja ja multimodaalisuutta erään kuurojenkoulun 6–9-luokkalaisten viittomakielisten suomi toisena kielenä -oppitunneilla. Ensikieleltään viittomakielisille oppilaille suomen kieli on ensimmäinen kirjoitettu kieli, joten sen merkitys heidän elämässään on suuri, ja suomen kielen hallinta vaikuttaa moneen elämän osa-alueeseen. Tutkimuskysymyksissäni kysyn, mitä resursseja eli välityskeinoja suomi toisena kielenä -oppitunneilla on käytössä. Analysoin erityisesti, mitä välityskeinoja on käytössä taulutyöskentelyn toiminnossa, jossa opettaja on luokan etuosassa ja johtaa opetustilannetta taulun läheltä samalla, kun oppilaat istuvat pulpeteissaan. Pohdin my…
Multimodal Aposematic Signals and Their Emerging Role in Mate Attraction
2018
Chemically defended animals often display conspicuous color patterns that predators learn to associate with their unprofitability and subsequently avoid. Such animals (i.e., aposematic), deter predators by stimulating their visual and chemical sensory channels. Hence, aposematism is considered to be “multimodal.” The evolution of warning signals (and to a lesser degree their accompanying chemical defenses) is fundamentally linked to natural selection by predators. Lately, however, increasing evidence also points to a role of sexual selection shaping warning signal evolution. One of the species in which this has been shown is the wood tiger moth, Arctia plantaginis, which we here put forward…

Doslidžennâ bìologìčnoï aktivnostìvtorinnogo ekstraktu zì šrotu travimaterinki zvičajnoï (Origanum vulgare)
2015
Studied the antimicrobial activity of secondary extract from oregano herbs waste (Origanum vulgare)against 7 standard test strains of microrganisms. Minimum bactericidal concentration of the extract to Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 P-is 3.125-6.25 mg/ml and 6.25-12.5 mg/ml to gram-negative bacteria and Candida albicans ATCC 10231.Total antioxidant activity determined by DPPH, secondary extract at a concentration of 400 ug/ml was 92 %. The tested extract had photoprotective activity. Obtained results confirm the perspective of using waste of oregano herbs for making extracts and creation on their basis of pharmaceuticals, veterinary drugs and cosmetics.

Alternative analysis of transient infiltration experiment to estimate soil water repellency
2019
The repellency index (RI) defined as the adjusted ratio between soil‐ethanol, Se, and soil‐water, Sw, sorptivities estimated from minidisk infiltrometer experiments has been used instead of the widely used water drop penetration time and molarity of ethanol drop tests to assess soil water repellency. However, sorptivity calculated by the usual early‐time infiltration equation may be overestimated as the effects of gravity and lateral capillary are neglected. With the aim to establish the best applicative procedure to assess RI, different approaches to estimate Se and Sw were compared that make use of both the early‐time infiltration equation (namely, the 1 min, S1, and the short‐time linear…
