Chemical Composition and Biological Activities of Prangos ferulacea Essential Oils
2022
Prangos ferulacea (L.) Lindl, which belongs to the Apiaceae family, is a species that mainly grows in the eastern Mediterranean region and in western Asia. It has been largely used in traditional medicine in several countries and it has been shown to possess several interesting biological properties. With the aim to provide new insights into the phytochemistry and pharmacology of this species, the essential oils of flowers and leaves from a local accession that grows in Sicily (Italy) and has not yet been previously studied were investigated. The chemical composition of both oils, obtained by hydrodistillation from the leaves and flowers, was evaluated by GC-MS. This analysis allowed us to …
Datu Modeļa Izstrādes Optimizācija
2017
Dynamical learning of a photonics quantum-state engineering process
2021
Abstract. Experimental engineering of high-dimensional quantum states is a crucial task for several quantum information protocols. However, a high degree of precision in the characterization of the noisy experimental apparatus is required to apply existing quantum-state engineering protocols. This is often lacking in practical scenarios, affecting the quality of the engineered states. We implement, experimentally, an automated adaptive optimization protocol to engineer photonic orbital angular momentum (OAM) states. The protocol, given a target output state, performs an online estimation of the quality of the currently produced states, relying on output measurement statistics, and determine…
Pulsed Electro-Acoustic Method for specimens and cables employed in HVDC systems: Some feasibility considerations
2018
Recent experiments on the use of the PEA method for testing dielectric materials in specimens and comparison with a detailed model provide an insight of the phenomenon and suggest the need of adopting similar models also for cables. What is said is even more important considering the possible future adoption of the PEA methodology to test DC cables for Pre-Qualification and Type Tests. The use of an accurate model of the PEA cell used for testing specimens and related experiments prove that the thickness of the different parts composing the PEA setup is a basic element for providing accurate charge reading and interpretation of the phenomenon. Both simulation and experimental results, carri…
Multi-application Based Fault-Tolerant Network-on-Chip Design for Mesh Topology Using Reconfigurable Architecture
2019
In this paper, we propose a two-step fault-tolerant approach to address the faults occurred in cores. In the first stage, a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) based approach has been proposed for the fault-tolerant mapping of multiple applications on to the mesh based reconfigurable architecture by introducing spare cores and a heuristic has been proposed for the reconfiguration in the second stage. The proposed approach has been experimented by taking several benchmark applications into consideration. Communication cost comparisons have been carried out by taking the failed cores as user input and the experimental results show that our approach could get improvements in terms of communicati…
Fundamentals on the Molecular Mechanism of Action of Antimicrobial Peptides
2019
Abstract Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are produced by several organisms as their first line of defense. Constituted by amino acids, they may present different mechanisms of action. The antimicrobial activity can be used by the peptide-producing organism itself, as innate immune strategy, or in the industry, applying as natural source preservatives. Understanding the possibilities of the operation of these compounds is a prerequisite for the development of effective uses, as well as for the establishment of combinations, which can even expand their applications considering the possibilities of genetic manipulations. Thus, the objective of this article is to review the basic principles of AM…
Review of the PEA Method for Space Charge Measurements on HVDC Cables and Mini-Cables
2019
This review takes into account articles and standards published in recent years concerning the application of the Pulsed Electro Acoustic (PEA) method for space charge measurement on High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cables and mini-cables. Since the 80s, the PEA method has been implemented for space charge measurements on flat specimens in order to investigate space charge phenomena and to evaluate the ageing of dielectrics. In recent years, this technique has been adapted to cylindrical geometry. Several studies and experiments have been carried out on the use of the PEA method for full size cables and HVDC cable models. The experiments have been conducted using different arrangements of…
Efficient and simple synthesis of novel 1,2,3-triazolyl-linked benzimidazolone, molecular docking and evaluation of their antimicrobial activity
2020
In this study, a novel series of 1,2,3-triazolyl-benzimidazolone derivatives have been synthesized by click reaction of azides with benzimidazolones 2a–b. The latter compounds were prepared with excellent yields (85–97%), the structures of products were determined by spectral analysis. Then, the X-rays crystallographic analysis of compound 7a revealed the self-assembling properties. The new heterocycles were evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and against fungi strains. The most tested synthesized compounds showed potent antibacterial and antifungal activities against all tested strains. The compound 6c was found to be the m…
Superiority of Optimized Portfolios to Naive Diversification: Fact or Fiction?
2017
Abstract DeMiguel, Garlappi, and Uppal (2009) conducted a highly influential study where they demonstrated that none of the optimized portfolios consistently outperformed the naive diversification. This result triggered a heated debate within the academic community on whether portfolio optimization adds value. Nowadays several studies claim to defend the value of portfolio optimization. The commonality in all these studies is that various portfolio optimization methods are implemented using the datasets generously provided by Kenneth French and the performance is measured by means of the Sharpe ratio. This paper aims to provide a cautionary note regarding the use of Kenneth French datasets …
Optimal Dynamic Portfolio Risk Management
2016
Numerous econometric studies report that financial asset volatilities and correlations are time-varying and predictable. Over the past decade, this knowledge has stimulated increasing interest in various dynamic portfolio risk control techniques. The two basic types of risk control techniques are: risk control across assets and risk control over time. At present, the two types of risk control techniques are not implemented simultaneously. There has been surprisingly little theoretical study of optimal dynamic portfolio risk management. In this paper, the author fills this gap in the literature by formulating and solving the multi-period portfolio choice problem. In terms of dynamic portfoli…
