Application of the trans-contextual model to predict change in leisure time physical activity

2021

Objective: This study tested effects of changes in the psychological constructs of the trans-contextual model (TCM) on changes in adolescents' outside of school moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (PA) measured using self-report and accelerometer-based device. Design: A three-wave longitudinal design was used. High school students (N = 331) completed measures of all the TCM constructs at Time1 and at Time2, five weeks apart. Self-reported PA behaviour was measured also at Time3, five weeks after Time2. PA was measured using accelerometer-based devices for seven days following Time1 and Time3 for a census week. Results: A structural equation model using residual change scores revealed tha…

Experiences of arbitrary management among Finnish academics in an era of academic capitalism

2020

For the last two decades, Finnish universities have faced the implementation of new systems of control and undergone dramatic changes that have worsened academic working conditions–such as corporatisation and budget cuts. This article explores Finnish academics’ experiences of university reforms with a special focus on the consequences it has had in terms of organisational socio-dynamics. We adapt Glynos and Howarth’s logics of critical explanation and apply this theoretical framework to analyse the interviews of academics who, against their own will, did not have their contracts renewed. This approach describes, explains, and criticises the logics–which are social, political and fantasmati…

Predicting physical activity change in cancer survivors: an application of the Health Action Process Approach.

2022

Purpose Previous research has not examined the utility of the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) to predict physical activity (PA) change in cancer survivors. The aim of the study was to investigate the efficacy of a HAPA-based model in predicting temporal change in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in cancer survivors. Methods Participants enrolled in the Wearable Activity Technology and Action Planning (WATAAP) trial completed validated questionnaires (n = 64) to assess HAPA constructs (action and maintenance self-efficacy, outcome expectancies, action planning, risk perceptions, and intention) and wore an ActiGraph to measure PA at baseline, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks later. D…

Tissue Dissociation and Primary Cells Isolation Using Recombinant Collagenases Class I and II

2014

Collagenases class I (Col G) and class II (Col H) currently available for tissue dissociation are produced from Clostridium histolyticum (human pathogen) strains. In the processes of extraction of the cells from the tissue, combined activity of both classes of enzymes is required. CI and CII are complementary in degrading collagen. ABIEL recently produced the collagenase class I and II using the recombinant DNA technologies (PCT WO 2011/073925 A9). The enzymes were produced in E. coli and purified by affinity chromatography. The method of production adopted allows absolute control of the final composition of these enzymes, as well as their stability, purity, activity, absence of toxicity an…

PLLA Scaffold via TIPS for Bone Tissue Engineering

2016

Tissue engineering offers a promising new approach to repair bone fractures, fractures that do not heal, and fractures due to bone tumors. In this work, two different approaches were tested in order to obtain Poly-L- Lactic Acid (PLLA) porous scaffolds via Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) for bone tissue engineering application. First, the possibility to produce a composite material, by incorporating Hydroxyapatite (HA) particles in a Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) matrix was investigated. Two PLLA/HA weight ratios (70/30 and 50/50) were tested. The results showed that the presence of HA does not influence the phase separation process, i.e. the composite scaffolds microstructure is simi…

Formulation of Different Chitosan Hydrogels for Cartilage Tissue Repair

2014

Different formulations of Chitosan/sulphate and Chitosan/PEGDE were produced by physical and chemical reticulation to obtain hydrogels with better physiochemical properties. The hydrogels were analyzed – in terms of their non-toxicity, proliferative, differentiative, inflammatory and immunology responses. Commercial grade Chitosan (Sigma) was solubilized and purified by progressive filtrations. Then, the polymer was freeze-dried in a water soluble cationic form. A physical hydrogel was prepared by mixing a 3 % w/w water solution of the a.m. polymer with different stoichiometric ratios of (SO4=) 1/0.5;1/0.75;1/1 respectively. The hydrogels were cross-linked in multiwells. The chemical hydrog…

Advancing stem cells: New therapeutic strategies for treating central nervous system disorders

2018

In this special issue, we explore new methods and knowledge to improve stem cell transplantation in diseases and conditions such as stroke, PD, and depression. Advancing the conventional idea regarding cell replacement in stem cell therapy, stem cells may also transfer healthy mitochondria to diseased ischemic neurons in stroke and improve the therapeutic time window of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) in a conjunctive therapy for stroke, and human Wharton’s Jelly-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (hWJ-MSCs) may rely mainly on trophic factor secretion to induce neuroprotective effects. In addition, trophic factors such as neurotrophin-4/5 (NT-4/5) and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic …

Identità in transizione.
