Vascularized composite allotransplantation - a Council of Europe position paper
2017
After more than 120 hand-upper extremity and 37 face transplant procedures performed worldwide, vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) now falls under the scope of organ transplant legislation in Europe and the United States. While in the USA, VCA has been considered as standard care since 2014, VCA in Europe is still performed through clinical research trials, except in United Kingdom. However, after two decades of favourable experience with upper extremity transplantation (UET), professionals in Europe are proposing hand allotransplantation as “controlled standard” care, as opposed to face transplantation (FT), which is still a challenging activity. The European Committee on Org…
Caractérisation et prévention des conséquences d’un syndrome métabolique dans la rétine
2018
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) results from carbohydrate and lipid disorders that originate from misbalanced energy metabolism. MetS is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes that, in pathophysiological conditions, is characterized by vascular alterations, particularly in the retina, creating the diabetic retinopathy (DR). Despite it presents a barrier limiting the input of blood factors, the retina is under metabolic variations. The consequences of MetS in the retina have not been characterized. MetS would be responsible for the inflammation and microvascular alterations in the retina and could participate to the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). A diet rich in omega-3 long chai…
Artificial cartilage bio-matrix formed of hyaluronic acid and Mg2+-polyphosphate.
2016
Here we show that inorganic polyphosphate (polyP), a polyanionic metabolic regulator consisting of multiple phosphate residues linked by energy-rich phosphoanhydride bonds, is present in the synovial fluid. In a biomimetic approach, to enhance cartilage synthesis and regeneration, we prepared amorphous polyP microparticles with Mg2+ as counterions. The particles were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopic (FTIR) analyses. Similar particles were obtained after addition of Mg2+ ions to a solution containing hyaluronic acid, as a major component of the synovial fluid, and soluble Na-polyP. The viscous paste-like ma…
Radiological Outcomes of Bone-Level and Tissue-Level Dental Implants: Systematic Review
2020
Purpose: to assess any differences on marginal bone loss between bone-level or tissue-level dental implants through a review of literature until September 2019. Materials and methods: MEDLINE, Embase and other database were searched by two independent authors. The search was limited to articles in English. Results: The search provided 1028 records and, after removing the duplicates through titles and abstracts screening, 45 full-text articles were assessed for eligibility. For qualitative analysis 20 articles were included, 17 articles of them for quantitative analysis. A total of 1161 patients (mean age 54,4 years) and 2933 implants were observed, 1427 (Tissue-level) and 1506 (Bone-level).…
Lipid-Based Edible Films and Coatings
2009
The quality of food products depends on their organoleptic, nutritional, and microbiological properties, all of which are subject to dynamic changes during storage and distribution. Such changes are mainly due to interactions between foods and their surrounding environment or to migration between different components within a composite food.
Structure and Function of Desmosomes
2007
Desmosomes are prominent adhesion sites that are tightly associated with the cytoplasmic intermediate filament cytoskeleton providing mechanical stability in epithelia and also in several nonepithelial tissues such as cardiac muscle and meninges. They are unique in terms of ultrastructural appearance and molecular composition with cell type-specific variations. The dynamic assembly properties of desmosomes are important prerequisites for the acquisition and maintenance of tissue homeostasis. Disturbance of this equilibrium therefore not only compromises mechanical resilience but also affects many other tissue functions as becomes evident in various experimental scenarios and multiple diseas…
Cartilage Regeneration and Tissue Engineering
2019
Abstract Articular cartilage in synovial joints is a hyaline cartilage highly hydrated with a rigorous order of cells and fibers and a specific content of proteoglycans and glycoproteins. It provides a low-friction surface, participates in the lubrication of the synovial joints, and distributes the forces to the underlying bone. It is an avascular and aneural tissue where small metabolites diffuse to and from cells. Unlike hyaline cartilage in other locations, articular cartilage lacks perichondrium, a layer of fibrous tissue around it that serves as the source of new cartilage cells. Thus, although extracellular matrix undergoes continuous remodeling throughout life, the ability to repair …
Cryopreserved platelets: from in vitro thrombin generation potential to in vivo safety
2015
Abstract Background: Cryopreservation of platelets (PLTs) at -80°C with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) can extend their shelf life up to 2 years. Cryopreserved PLTs (CRY-PLTs) are reported to have a greater in vivo hemostatic effect than liquid-stored PLTs. Aims of this study were: i. to evaluate the thrombin generation potential of buffy coat derived cryopreserved PLTs (CRY- BC PLT) in comparison with fresh buffy coat derived platelets concentrates; ii. to determine the efficacy and safety of CRY-PLTs transfusion in hematological patients with severe thrombocytopenia. Materials and methods: BC PLTs were obtained from 5 buffy coats and pooled. The final PLTs concentrates were leukoreduced by fil…
Muscle ultrasonography and computed tomography in elderly trained and untrained women
1993
Ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT) were compared in studying the associations between long-term physical training and quadriceps muscle mass and structure in female athletes and controls, aged 66-85 years. Muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) measured using US correlated highly with that measured using CT, but the latter technique yielded 30% higher values on average. The echo intensity of the fasciae and bone measured by US correlated positively with the mean radiological density and negatively with the relative proportion of fat obtained from CT. Low intramuscular echo intensity was accompanied by high muscle density and low relative proportion of fat. The athletes had larger …
