Tutkimus on osa Relationaalinen mieli monitoimijaisten terapiadialogien muutoshetkissä -tutkimusprojektia. Käytettyinä menetelminä olivat Dialogical Investigations Of Happenings of Change -menetelmä sekä asento- ja liikesynkronian havainnointiin kehitetty kategorinen menetelmä. Kuudennessa istunnossa asento- ja liikesynkroniaa ilmeni vähemmän, mutta istunnos…

Dielectrophoresis as an assembly method for carbon nanotube memory elements
2010
The experiments described in this Master's thesis aim to assess the practicality of using dielectrophoresis (DEP) for assembling memory elements from carbon nanotubes (CNTs). These elements were field-effect transistors (FETs) with a wide hysteresis window. The devices assessed were made on a silicon substrate with a HfO2 - TiO2 - HfO2 gate dielectric layer to ensure a predictable hysteresis for memory operation. The FETs were used for further research in regard to environmental effects in their operation. An average yield of 12.5 % over 26 different trapping attempts, a total of 650 gaps, was achieved for single trapped CNTs in a two-electrode configuration with a 1 µm gap between electrod…
Fifteen operationally important decisions in the planning of biodiversity offsets
2018
Many development projects, whether they are about construction of factories, mines, roads, railways, new suburbs, shopping malls, or even individual houses, have negative environmental consequences. Biodiversity offsetting is about compensating that damage, typically via habitat restoration, land management, or by establishment of new protected areas. Offsets are the fourth step of the so-called mitigation hierarchy, in which ecological damage is first avoided, minimized second, and third restored locally. Whatever residual damage remains is then offset. Offsetting has been increasingly adopted all around the world, but simultaneously serious concerns are expressed about the validity of the…
Prospectives to tractor cabin design with computational acoustics tools
2011
Computational acoustical models allow automated optimization of tractor design with respect to acoustic properties, which could speed up significantly the design process of tractor cabin prototypes. This article gives insightful prospectives to the tractor design process by considering modern computational acoustics technology. Mathematical formulation for a system consisting of vibrating elastic tractor structure and airfilled acoustic enclosure are given and a related numerical solution technique with finite element method (FEM) is presented. Simulation results produced with commercially available software are reviewed. nonPeerReviewed
Associations between neonatal cry acoustics and visual attention during the first year
2019
It has been suggested that early cry parameters are connected to later cognitive abilities. The present study is the first to investigate whether the acoustic features of infant cry are associated with cognitive development already during the first year, as measured by oculomotor orienting and attention disengagement. Cry sounds for acoustic analyses (fundamental frequency; F0) were recorded in two neonatal cohorts at the age of 0–8 days (Tampere, Finland) or at 6 weeks (Cape Town, South Africa). Eye tracking was used to measure oculomotor orienting to peripheral visual stimuli and attention disengagement from central stimuli at 8 months (Tampere) or at 6 months (Cape Town) of age. Only a m…
Conjugation with carbon nanotubes improves the performance of mesoporous silicon as Li-ion battery anode
2020
Carbon nanotubes can be utilized in several ways to enhance the performance of silicon-based anodes. In the present work, thermally carbonized mesoporous silicon (TCPSi) microparticles and single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are conjugated to create a hybrid material that performs as the Li-ion battery anode better than the physical mixture of TCPSi and CNTs. It is found out that the way the conjugation is done has an essential role in the performance of the anode. The conjugation should be made between negatively charged TCPSi and positively charged CNTs. Based on the electrochemical experiments it is concluded that the positive charges, i.e., excess amine groups of the hybrid material i…

Experimental studies on carbon nanotubes and graphene functionalized via physical adsorption with cellulose and avidin
2018
In this Thesis I have experimentally studied structural, electronic, and optical properties of hybrids of nanocarbon materials, carbon nanotubes (CNT) and graphene, and certain biomacromolecules. The latter are especially xylan, a type of hemicellulose, and avidin, an important protein. Complexes of CNT with hemicellulose are attractive because the hybrid material is soluble in water. The conductive transport properties of thin films of CNT /hemicellulose have been systematically studied with different experimental tools. These are low temperature DC conduction measurements, Kelvin probe microscopy, and optical conductivity measurements at terahertz frequencies. The results clearly indicate …
