On Whitham and Related Equations
2017
The aim of this paper is to study, via theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, the dynamics of Whitham and related equations. In particular, we establish rigorous bounds between solutions of the Whitham and Korteweg–de Vries equations and provide some insights into the dynamics of the Whitham equation in different regimes, some of them being outside the range of validity of the Whitham equation as a water waves model.
Adjacency matrices of random digraphs: singularity and anti-concentration
2017
Let ${\mathcal D}_{n,d}$ be the set of all $d$-regular directed graphs on $n$ vertices. Let $G$ be a graph chosen uniformly at random from ${\mathcal D}_{n,d}$ and $M$ be its adjacency matrix. We show that $M$ is invertible with probability at least $1-C\ln^{3} d/\sqrt{d}$ for $C\leq d\leq cn/\ln^2 n$, where $c, C$ are positive absolute constants. To this end, we establish a few properties of $d$-regular directed graphs. One of them, a Littlewood-Offord type anti-concentration property, is of independent interest. Let $J$ be a subset of vertices of $G$ with $|J|\approx n/d$. Let $\delta_i$ be the indicator of the event that the vertex $i$ is connected to $J$ and define $\delta = (\delta_1, …
Maximum Torque Per Ampere control algorithm for low saliency ratio interior permanent magnet synchronous motors
2017
This paper presents an investigation on the comparison between the Maximum Torque Per Ampere (MTPA) and the Field Orientation Control (FOC) algorithms for interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs). In particular, this study was carried out on a small-power IPMSM with low salience ratio. Both control algorithms have been implemented in the Matlab/Simulink environment, obtaining promising results.
Mechanical properties of macroscopic magnetocrystals
2019
Abstract We studied experimentally and by numerical simulations the mechanical response of arrays of macroscopic magnetic spheres when an external stress is applied. First, the tensile strength of single chains and ribbons was analyzed. Then, simple cubic (cP), hexagonal (Hx) and hybrid (cP-Hx) structures, called here magnetocrystals , were assembled and subjected to tensile stress, bending stress and torsion until failure was reached. Atomistic crystalline structures are isotropic, but in the case of magnetocrystals, even when geometric isotropy is obeyed, dipolar magnetic interactions introduce a physical anisotropy which modifies, in a non-usual manner, the structures response to the kin…
The Acoustic Wave Behavior Within the PEA Cell for Space Charge Measurement
2018
In order to evaluate the acoustic wave behavior within the Pulsed Electro Acoustic (PEA) cell, a simulation model has been developed in this work. The model, implemented in Matlab environment, is based on the analogy between acoustic and electrical quantities. Therefore, it was possible to model the PEA cell as cascade connected lossy transmission lines. The model has been validated theoretically by making a comparison with a simulation result found in literature. The experimental validation has also been made by using the PEA cell of the LEPRE high voltage lab. In addition, four graphs have been realized. Two of them can be used to establish in easy and fast way to obtain the minimum groun…
THE GYROTRON STARTUP SCENARIO IN THE SINGLE MODE TIME DEPENDENT APPROACH
2019
The paper explains how to solve the Gyrotron equation system in the Single Mode Time Dependent Approach. In particular, we point out problems encountered when solving these well-known equations. The starting current estimation approach a using time model is suggested. The solution has been implemented in the Matlab code, which is attached to the article.
A Novel Fault-Tolerant Routing Algorithm for Mesh-of-Tree Based Network-on-Chips
2019
Use of bus architecture based communication with increasing processing elements in System-on-Chip (SoC) leads to severe degradation of performance and speed of the system. This bottleneck is overcome with the introduction of Network-on-Chips (NoCs). NoCs assist in communication between cores on a single chip using router based packet switching technique. Due to miniaturization, NoCs like every Integrated circuit is prone to different kinds of faults which can be transient, intermittent or permanent. A fault in any one component of such a crucial network can degrade performance leaving other components non-usable. This paper presents a novel Fault-Tolerant routing Algorithm for Mesh-of-Tree …
Who's better at spotting? A comparison between aerial photography and observer-based methods to monitor floating marine litter and marine mega-fauna.
2020
Pollution by marine litter is raising major concerns due to its potential impact on marine biodiversity and, above all, on endangered mega-fauna species, such as cetaceans and sea turtles. The density and distribution of marine litter and mega-fauna have been traditionally monitored through observer-based methods, yet the advent of new technologies has introduced aerial photography as an alternative monitoring method. However, to integrate results produced by different monitoring techniques and consider the photographic method a viable alternative, this ‘new’ methodology must be validated. This study aims to compare observations obtained from the concurrent application of observer-based and…
Partitioning of nitrogen during melting and recycling in subduction zones and the evolution of atmospheric nitrogen
2019
Abstract The subduction of sediment connects the surface nitrogen cycle to that of the deep Earth. To understand the evolution of nitrogen in the atmosphere, the behavior of nitrogen during the subduction and melting of subducted sediments has to be estimated. This study presents high-pressure experimental measurements of the partitioning of nitrogen during the melting of sediments at sub-arc depths. For quantitative analysis of nitrogen in minerals and glasses, we calibrated the electron probe micro-analyzer on synthetic ammonium feldspar to measure nitrogen concentrations as low as 500 μg g−1. Nitrogen abundances in melt and mica are used together with mass balance calculations to determi…
Inter-annual climate variability in Europe during the Oligocene icehouse
2017
Abstract New sclerochronological data suggest that a variability comparable to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) was already present during the middle Oligocene, about 20 Myr earlier than formerly assumed. Annual increment width data of long-lived marine bivalves of Oligocene (30–25 Ma) strata from Central Europe revealed a distinct quasi-decadal climate variability modulated on 2–12 (mainly 3–7) year cycles. As in many other modern bivalves, these periodic changes in shell growth were most likely related to changes in primary productivity, which in turn, were coupled to atmospheric circulation patterns. Stable carbon isotope values of the shells (δ 13 C shell ) further corroborated the …
