A CTLA4high genotype is associated with myasthenia gravis in thymoma patients

2005

Myasthenia gravis (MG) in thymoma patients depends critically on intratumorous generation and export of mature autoreactive CD4+ T cells. Why non-MG thymomas fail to produce CD4+ T cells is unknown. We studied three single-nucleotide polymorphisms of the cytotoxic T-lymphocyte–associated antigen 4(CTLA4) gene in thymoma patients, nonthymoma early-onset MG patients, and control subjects. Surprisingly, the CTLA4high genotype +49A/A, which is protective against several autoimmune diseases, exerted a prominent predisposing effect to paraneoplastic MG in thymoma patients. The unusual disease association with a CTLA4high genotype implies a unique pathogenesis of paraneoplastic MG, with high CTLA4…

Agreement of white-to-white measurements with the IOLMaster 700, Atlas 9000, and Sirius systems

2018

Current advances in ocular surgery require the evaluation of differences in automated white-to-white (WTW) measurements between systems. We aim to analyze three different commonly used devices in clinical practice: the IOLMaster 700, the Atlas 9000, and the Sirius.Ninety right eyes of ninety healthy subjects were included. Measurements of WTW distances were taken with each device for all subjects in the same session and by the same observer. Statistical comparison was carried out by means of the rANOVA procedure and the Bonferroni post-hoc test. In addition, the Bland-Altman analysis was applied in order to perform pairwise comparisons.Average WTW values obtained by the IOLMaster 700, the A…

The PTPN22gain-of-function+1858T(+) genotypes correlate with low IL-2 expression in thymomas and predispose to myasthenia gravis

2009

Protein tyrosine phosphatase, non-receptor type 22 (PTPN22) inhibits T-cell activation and interleukin-2 (IL-2) production. The PTPN22(gain-of-function)+1858T(+) genotypes predispose to multiple autoimmune diseases, including early-onset (non-thymomatous) myasthenia gravis (MG). The disease association and the requirement of IL-2/IL-2 receptor signaling for intrathymic, negative T-cell selection have suggested that these genotypes may weaken T-cell receptor (TCR) signaling and impair the deletion of autoreactive T cells. Evidence for this hypothesis is missing. Thymoma-associated MG, which depends on intratumorous generation and export of mature autoreactive CD4(+) T cells, is a model of au…

The Retrotransverse Foramen of the Atlas Is not a Modern Anatomic Variation

2019

Background The retrotransverse foramen (RTF) is a nonmetric variant of the atlas vertebra that consists of an abnormal accessory foramen located on the posterior root of the transverse process and it extends from the posterior root of the transverse process to the root of the posterior arch. Its presence has been related to regional variations of the venous circulation. It is currently unknown whether the RTF is a modern or an ancient anatomic variation. Case Description We analyzed the skeletal remains from the late-ancient Roman necropolis (II-VI centuries ad ) of La Boatella (Valencia, Spain) and we found a well-preserved individual skeleton that presented with a left retrotransverse for…

Traumatic atlanto-axial rotatory subluxation after surgical correction of prominent ears: Case report and review of the literature

2019

International audience; Corrective surgery of prominent ears may be justified for social or aesthetic reasons during childhood or adulthood. Post-operative complications occur in approximately 0 to 8.4% of cases. This case describes a rare atlanto-axoid rotatory subluxation after bilateral surgical correction of prominent ears under general anesthesia. Orthopedic treatment was done after two months of medical roaming outside of our center. The one-year post-operative clinic consultation and radiological exam were normal. Only the psychological impact of the episode remained. Traumatic atlanto-axial rotatory subluxation is a rare complication but should be considered after post-operative tor…

The future of temporary wetlands in drylands under global change

2021

The Andalusian International University held a workshop entitled Temporary wetlands’ future in drylands under the projected global change scenario in March 2020 in Baeza, Spain, with 26 participants from 10 countries. The workshop objectives were to promote international cooperation and scientific exchange on the conservation and protection of temporary wetlands. The participants highlighted the extreme conditions that temporary and permanent wetlands, ponds, and shallow lakes are currently facing and predicted a dismal future for these systems due to climate change. To foster a holistic view of these ecosystems, the workshop included wetland watersheds. It was concluded that the main threa…

Interruption of CD28-mediated costimulation during allergen challenge protects mice from allergic airway disease

2012

Background Allergic asthma is a T H 2-promoted hyperreactivity with an immediate, IgE, and mast cell–dependent response followed by eosinophil-dominated inflammation and airway obstruction. Objective Because costimulation by CD28 is essential for T H 2 but not T H 1 responses, we investigated the effect of selective interference with this pathway in mice using the models of ovalbumin and house dust mite–induced airway inflammation. Methods To study the role of CD28 in the effector phase of allergic airway inflammation, we developed an inducibly CD28-deleting mouse strain or alternatively used a CD28 ligand-binding site–specific mouse anti-mouse mAb blocking CD28 engagement. Results We show …

Top-quark mass measurements at the LHC: alternative methods

2016

Alternative top quark mass determinations can provide inputs to the world average with orthogonal systematic uncertainties and may help to refine the interpretation of the standard method. Among a number of recent results I focus on the extractions by ATLAS and CMS of the top quark pole mass from the top quark pair and tt + 1 jet production cross-section, which have now reached a precision of 1%.
